BHAGODI MAIRA 8.9
It was a perfect normal morning. The sun rose from east, the birds chirped happily, tree's were green and roses were red, Jatin's driver was as usual late, and abdul chacha as usual had a conflict with him about something. Everything seemed normal, but not for everyone. There were two people who were unusually quiet, Gunjan and Samrat.
"Coffee?" Shilpa asked Gunjan who took a bite of her sandwich.
"No aunty, thanks." Gunjan said. Shilpa sensed that something had happened between them. Gunjan and samrat, who used to chatter nonstop on the dining table, were sitting like they don't know each other. She was noticing this from two days. She looked at samrat suspiciously and raised her eyebrow, on which samrat just shrugged. She frowned and he signaled her to go.
Its better to leave it on them only.. Shilpa thought and went towards the kitchen.
"Chashmish, kuch to bolo yaar..", Samrat whispered as soon as shilpa turned her back on them," maaro, gaali do.. do something' but don't remain silent." Samrat waited for her reaction but she simply ignored him.
"Chashmish, I'm sorry.. 2 din ho gaye hain tumne muzse baat nahi ki.. itna bhi kya gussa..?" Gunjan looked up, and he pleaded her with his eyes. She shook her head and got up.
"Mom, we're leaving for college.." Samrat shouted and followed gunjan, "Hey chashmish, kitni baar sorry kahu yaar? Enough na.."He said as Gunjan stopped and turned around, which was completely unexpected to samrat , who bumped on her.
"Ouch..!" she winced and looked at her foot which was stamped by samrat inadvertently.
"Crap.. Hey , I'm sorry again." He bent down and advanced his hand towards her foot, when she moved back.
"Enough Samrat. Please don't apologize. And stop following me" She said sternly.
"But chashmish, if I won't, then how will you forgive me?" Samrat said making a puppy face.
"That's why I'm saying, don't say sorry.. Because I'm not going to forgive you this time. And don't follow me now." Gunjan said and stormed out of the main gate as samrat watched her exit, wondering what kind of crime he did.
''''''''''''
Gunjan couldn't concentrate in her classes also. All the time she kept thinking about the record and Samrat's apology.
Don't be so hard on him Gunjan, it was just an accident.. her mind scolded her.
But he is so careless! I really hate him for this' She argued with her mind..
But he didn't knew how important it was for you..
So what, he should've been careful about everything. Its high time he realizes this.. I wont forgive him so easily.. She finally ended her inner battle.
When she came out of the college, she found Samrat on the main gate, sitting on his bike waiting for her. He smiled at her cheekily and she frowned. He held his ears and and apologized her. Gunjan softened a bit, but made a plain face. She walked away, only to be stopped by his bike.
"Kya hain?" Gunjan asked angrily.
"Galti ho gayi.. maaf kar do' please.." He again held his ears and looked at her hopefully. He looked cute and it became difficult for gunjan to stay angry and she looked away, folding her hands on her chest.
"Samrat , tumhe kya laga, tum galti karke maafi maang loge, aur log tumhe maaf kar denge?" She said frowning.
"Logonki chodo chasmish. Tum apni baat karo.. Tum muze maaf karogi ya nahi?" Samrat leaned towards her and said cheekily.
"Nahi, tumne wo record nahi, mera dil toda hai!" said gunjan.
"Tum sacchi maaf nahi karogi?"samrat said raising his eyebrow.
"Nahi karungi'!" she said sternly.
"Pakka?" Samrat asked furrowing his eyebrows.
"I'm damn sure I'll not.."
"To chalo.." said samrat and pulled her and made her sit on his bike forcefully, ignoring her protest.
"Samrat ye kya kar rahe ho.." Gunjan said with irritation as he increased the speed.
"Shh' chillana mat! Tumhe kidnap kar raha hu.." Samrat said and laughed devilishly. Gunjan couldn't help but smile at this, and samrat who looked her smile through the rearview mirror, smiled too.
"chashmish, Tum pehli ladki ho jo kidnap honepar bhi has rahi hain." He said and she spanked him.
"Main nahi has rahi." She said forming a frown on her face, "Aur ye mat samazna ke maine tumhe maaf kar diya."
"whatever! At least I made you smile.. that's enough for me." Samrat said and smiled warmly at gunjan thru the rearview mirror.
As the bike turned on some unusual route, gunjan got confused.
"Samrat! Ghar to left side me hain..Ye ham kaha jaa rahe hain?" she asked samrat.
"Chashmish! You are being kidnapped!! Kitne sawaal karogi yaar?" samrat said and raised speed which made her hold him even more tightly.
........................
"So... Welcome to my den.. Nariman point.." Samrat said as the bike came to a halt.
"your den?" Gunjan asked with confusion.
"Haan. Jab bhi main bahut jyada sad hota hu, ya udaas hota hu, ya fir lonely feel karta hu.. to yaha aata hu.." he said walking towards the dead end. Gunjan was amazed to see the roaring Arabian sea in front of her. The wind was flirting with her dupatta, and because of the high tide, she could feel small droplets of sea on her face as the waves collided on the rocks on the shore. It lifted her mood.
Samrat watched her as she opened her arms , like she wanted to embrace the whole sea..
"Liked it?" he came near her and whispered in her ears.
"Yes..! very much!" she said , her eyes closed.
"Good. But there's something that you'll love.." said samrat.
"What?" Gunjan said opening her eyes and samrat started pulling his tshirt.
"Samrat! What are you doing?" Gunjan shouted..
"Chashmish! Kitni gandi soch hain tumhari!!" Samrat frowned, and a smile formed on his lips as he took out a CD from inside his Tshirt.
"Ye kya hain?" she stared at the CD.
"Tum hi dekh lo.." Samrat handed over it to her. Gunjan looked at the CD cover.
"Samrat?.. cliff Richards?.." her eyes widened.
"Yes. But sorry, I couldn't get the gramophone record." He said apologetically.
She stared at the CD blankly as she felt tears on her cheeks.
"Its ok samrat. Tumhe ye sab karne ki jaroorat nahi thi."She said in a low voice.
"Chashmish..", He took the CD from her hands and looked at it carefully," CD to theek hain, singer bhi wohi hain, aur wo track bhi hain' fir bhi tum ro rahi ho?"
"Tum nahi samjhoge.." she said looking away.
"Batakar to dekho chashmish.. shayad samajh jau'" he said looking at her intently. Gunjan looked at him, she saw worry in his eyes. His chashmish didn't talk to him for 2 days, because of that record. He wanted to know what made that record so important.
"Samrat, Wo record.. wo mere mom ka tha.. It was her only thing I had with me." She said and Samrat knew why she was so mad at him.
"Ch-Chashmish.. I-I'm really sorry.. I really didn't .." he trailed off , not knowing what to say.
"Its ok samrat. I know it was an accident and you would not do any such thing on purpose. But.. But that just don't help'" her voice broke as she said this which made him feel even guiltier.
Why did I touch that record at the first place?- he thought cursing inwardly.
"I'm really sorry chashmish.. but.. this.." he stumbled on the words as he forwarded the CD towards her. She looked at the CD impassively and he took it back, "I know, I know.. this will also not help."
Gunjan looked at him, guilt was written everywhere on his face.
"No, that might help.." she said to lessen his guilt as he looked up in her eyes wistfully. He handed over the CD to her as she gave him a weak smile.
"I'm sorry chashmish. I'm really bad at all this emotional stuff. I keep hurting people. I'm a bad person." He said looking away from her.
"No samrat. You are a very good person. Tumhara dil bahut bada hain. Tum sabka itna khayal rakhte ho.. sabke bareme itna sochte ho.." Gunjan kept her hand on his and assured him. Samrat looked at her eyes, as if he wanted to check if she really meant what she had said.
"Nahi , tum nahi jaanti.. Sue bhi mere wajah se hurt hui hain.." He stopped in between as if to avoid the topic, and turned his gaze away. Gunjan wondered whether to ask him or not.
"Samrat I wanted to ask you about.." She said after some awkward moments of silence, but trailed off, unsure of his reaction.
"About Adhiraj and Suhani right?" Samrat caught the right nerve,"There's nothing Chashmish.. no problem.. except.."
"Except?" she looked at him questioningly.
"Except they themselves. They went to same college, fell in love and decided to marry. They were mad for each other. But Adhiraj's Mom didn't approve this marriage. Apparently she didn't want her son to marry a rich, spoilt city-girl who doesn't have any morals and who cannot handle a joint family. That time she created much ado about the whole thing. And you know Mom-Dad. They couldn't handle this. They've brought up us in an environment where they gave us freedom but at the same time they made sure that we are not spoilt. They have taught us how to fly, and at the same time how to keep your feet grounded. And Adhiraj's mother had questioned their upbringing. They knew their daughter didn't lack morality. Initially, they were not so happy about this alliance; but slowly everyone bent before Suhani and adhiraj's wish. But I know they still regret about this." Samrat sighed and looked at Gunjan.
"Why do you think so?" asked gunjan.
"Because they can see that Suhani is not happy. And Adhiraj is also not happy. Well no one is happy about this."
"But why? They finally got married. Where's the problem now?" Gunjan was even more confused now.
"Well, they were living in a dream earlier. They thought life will be easy after marriage. Everyone will accept them. But Adhiraj's mom didn't. And Mom-Dad tried, but Adhiraj kept a distance between him and our family. Suhani's heart is torn between Him and us, chashmish.. But she doesn't speak to him about that. I hate that man.", Samrat sighed and fell silent, staring at the sky.
"But they love each other Samrat. And I think you should accept him as your Brother in law." Gunjan tried, "Atleast for your.."
"Chashmish.. lets drop it." Samrat said dryly.
"Ok. Leave it.." Gunjan gave up.
They sat there for a long time, staring at the sea without speaking a single word. Gunjan knew Samrat needed some space and she kept quiet and Samrat appreciated her understanding nature. But still they communicated a lot, they had broken all the barriers of languages as, now, silence could speak for them.
The sun was about to set and waves began to loose their aggression as the tide changed. Samrat looked at the west admiringly, the sky looked so beautiful.
"I think we should leave now. Its getting dark.." Gunjan broke the silence and got up when samrat grabbed her wrist.
"Not now.. " he made her sit again and looked into her eyes," Chashmish, tum muzse naraaj nahi ho na?"
Gunjan could feel how regretful he was.
"Nahi samrat. Main naraaj nahi hu." She said honestly, she wasn't angry at him anymore.
"Muze agar pata hota to main use haath bhi nahi lagata.." he sighed.
"Samrat!" she smiled at him, "Ab chodo bhi.. Main sach me naraaj nahi hu.. aur tum bhi aise sad face mat banao.."
Samrat felt relaxed and they smiled at each other.
"Waise.. w- wo record.. bahut special tha kya?" He asked with hesitation.
"Haan.. It was special.." She smiled at herself," My dad sang that song for my mom infront of the whole college. And that is when she accepted his proposal."
"Haahaa' So filmy!!" Samrat laughed, but controlled himself as gunjan gave him a cold stare,"I mean.. I cant imagine ke Rajat uncle aisa bhi kuch kar sakte hain.."
"Kyu nahi kar sakte? Pyar me koi bhi kuch bhi kar sakta hain.." Gunjan said and samrat chuckled, "haso mat.. tumhe jab pyar hoga tab dekhna.."
"No way!! I don't want to do all this crap.." Samrat said shaking his head negatively.
"Love is not crap!! It's a wonderful feeling. It's just so beautiful" Gunjan said dreamily.
"Oh really' it seems you know how it feels to be in love.. have you loved someone..?" he asked teasingly.
"Oh yes.. I'm in love with love.." Gunjan replied.
"Accha.. ? so how does it feels to be in love?" samrat said with a grin.
"umm.. it feels great.. like it feels when the raindrops of first rain fall on your head or when you listen to your favorite love song' or when you eat your favorite chocolate.. and it melts in your mouth'"
"Chashmish.. that's so silly..!" Samrat protested, and gunjan looked at him angrily, "Ye bhi koi feeling hain..?"
"Ok try this." Gunjan was not ready to let go him."Socho, ke koi hain.. jise tumhari chinta ho, jiske baareme soch kar tumhe accha lagta hain.. jo tumhe udaas nahi dekh sakta.. tumhare chehre par ek smile lane ke liye wo kuch bhi kar sakta hain.. jo hamesha tumhe protect kare.. aise kisike milne par jo lagta hain.. wo pyar hain" she said dreamily as samrat stared at her with plain face. Gunjan got confused, "Kya hua.. aise kyun dekh rahe ho?"
"kisi aise aadmi ke bare me sochne ke liye keh rahi ho jo muze protect kare.. tum mere baareme baat kar rahi thi ya apne?" Samrat complained as gunjan laughed at him.
"Main to mere bare me hi baat karungi naa samrat! Tumhe apni feelings khud hi samazni hongi'" she said through her laughter.
"Wo to main samaz lunga.. magar tumhe kya lagta hain, ye jo lambi list banayi hain tumne, aisa koi tumhe milega?" He said grinning.
"Kyu nahi milega? Jaroor milega.." she said with confidence.
"Ek baar fir se sochlo chashmish," Samrat said teasingly, "tumhari is list ke bare me.. isme se koi ek kaam bhi aajtak kisine kiya hain?"
"Haan..umm.. nai.. pata nahi" Gunjan stammered and samrat smiled looking at her confused face.
"Lagta hain tumhe apni list choti karni padegi.." he said with a smile and started moving towards the bike as Gunjan stood still there , thinking about her list...
Ek baar fir se sochlo chashmish' tumhari is list ke bare me.. isme se koi ek kaam bhi aajtak kisine kiya hain?"
She closed her eyes and thought about that..
Socho, ke koi hain.. jise tumhari chinta ho..
She remembered the Kart race and the worried Samrat..
"Tum bilkul pagal ho.Kya jaroorat thi speed badhane ki?"
Yes, he cared for her a lot!!
Jiske baareme soch kar tumhe accha lagta hain..
She thought about the heart shaped locket he gave her..
"Dad! Don't worry. Yaha bhi koi hain jo muze 'Princess treatment' deta hain, bilkul aap hi ki tarah!"
A smile formed on her lips..
Jo tumhe udaas nahi dekh sakta..
She remembered how he had cheered her up when her dad went to Jamnagar..
"Bas , itni see baat? Chalo yaar.. cheer up.. ham sab hain na?"
And then today morning he 'kidnapped' her and brought her here.. just to lift her mood.
Tumhare chehre par ek smile lane ke liye wo kuch bhi kar sakta hain..
She thought about the surprise he and suhani gave to her , by inviting her dad to Mumbai secretly.
"Aur wo khushi wo excitement jo tumare sweet se chehre par aaj aayi, wo kaise aati?"
Jo hamesha tumhe protect kare..
"kyoki tum meri best friend ho, main tumhari jaan aur dil, donoko kuuuuch nahi hone dunga."
He had said it jokingly, but she knew he meant it..
tumhe kya lagta hain, ye jo lambi list banayi hain tumne, aisa koi tumhe milega.. his voice echoed in her mind.
It was him!! It was always him' how could she miss it!! And suddenly she was much relaxed, and happy.. She had dreamt of the special someone for years.. She had thought about the feeling of love many times earlier. But now she realized that the feeling was very different than what she thought. It didn't feel like the raindrops, or any love song, or her favorite chocolate.. It was different, and beautiful' It was better than anything in the world'
"Muze lagta nahi hain.. Muze wo mil gaya hain Samrat..!" She said to herself as she looked at him, now from a different viewpoint. she walked upto him in trance, as if she was hypnotized, and sat on the bike behind him.
After that she couldn't hear the honking horns, she couldn't see the people around her, she couldn't feel the existence of the crowd around them, she didn't snort about the traffic, she didn't complain about the pollution in the air. Everything seemed different that day.. Sweet, serene, beautiful.. Her world had changed as Samrat entered in her world..
