Chapter 10: The Talk: Part A
Shilpa looked around to find what Rahul, Muskaan, and Anjali were gawking at, but was unable to locate anything. She noticed how Armaan's body had stiffened when he had turned around, and after a few moments when he turned back, his mouth was set in a firm line.
"Anjali!?" Shilpa heard the sound before she saw a face.
She saw a girl wearing a red dress that looked a lot like a shirt; something Shilpa would have never been caught dead in. (A/N: I know Shilpa wears knee length dresses, but in my story she'll rarely wear one.)
"Maya," Anjali faked a grin and it was so obvious that Shilpa knew that the Maya girl was able to see it.
Anjali stood up and hugged Maya, then sat back town, and exchanged a worried look with Muskaan.
"Atul, how are you?" Maya kept a straight face.
"Hey." Atul looked up for a few seconds to acknowledge her.
"Muskaan." Maya wasn't able to keep the frown off of her face.
Muskaan paid no heed to the girl standing near Anjali and started a conversation with Atul.
"Hey Rahul," Maya smiled at Rahul seductively.
"Maya," Rahul stood up and hugged her convincingly enough to make her seem that he was happy to see her.
As soon as Rahul sat down, he muttered a few curses in Punjabi that were barely audible, but Shilpa had heard them. Shilpa didn't know who Maya was, but she didn't like her at all. After hearing Rahul utter those words to himself thinking no one would hear him, made her laugh out loud.
Rahul looked at her, surprised that she chose such a moment to laugh out loud, and then realized that Shilpa had heard him. He grinned at her laughing form, and winked at her. Shilpa found that even funnier and smacked Rahul's chest with the back of her hand. Maya looked incredibly confused at their behaviour, and that made the incident all the funnier for Shilpa.
Armaan also started laughing after he heard Shilpa giggle uncontrollably.
Muskaan stared at Shilpa weirdly, but burst out laughing as well.
"Hey, you! Girl with the green eyes." Maya uttered; her tone gave away how annoyed she was feeling.
"Me?" Shilpa asked suddenly sobering up, but a smile was still playing on her lips.
"Yeah, you! Do you need professional help 'cause I can recommend you a couple of doctors."
"It's okay, Maya" Muskaan spoke on behalf of Shilpa "She doesn't need to get plastic surgery done on any part of her face or body. She's still going to be prettier than you, even without the surgery."
Shilpa burst into giggles, and hit Muskaan on her hand lightly.
"Muskaan!" Shilpa spoke acting serious "Don't be mean!"
"Ex-cuse me?" Maya looked flabbergasted at Muskaan's words "She needs professional help. Nobody just bursts out laughing like that, okay? She needs therapy."
"The one who needs therapy is you," Rahul spoke, his voice monotone.
"Whatever," Maya spoke defeated "She's probably Armaan's flavour of the week. She'll be gone by the end of the week."
"No, she won't." Armaan smirked at Maya's surprised expression "She's my fiance-to-be."
"Fiance-to-be?! HER?" Maya looked astounded.
"Does it concern you?" Shilpa asked honestly, but Maya took it the wrong way.
"You, shut up. I'm not talking to you right now." Maya glared at Shilpa.
"Are you insane?! Why would you marry someone like her?" Maya pointed a finger at Shilpa.
"It's my life, and I'll choose who I want to marry. It doesn't have anything to do with you." Armaan stood up staring directly at Maya. Shilpa became worried, as she saw him stand up roughly. A couple of people at the tables near them were whispering and pointing at their table. She hadn't meant any harm to Maya.
"She's not your type." Maya stated.
"Who knows what my type is? You sure as hell don't." Armaan looked angry.
"Armaan!" Shilpa pulled on his wrist "Sit down, people are staring."
Armaan reluctantly sat down as he looked around to see the scene he was causing.
Maya laughed bitterly and spoke, "I never thought I'd see the day you'll get bossed around by a girl like her."
Armaan hands formed fists, as he looked up and glared at Maya. The smirk that was plastered on her face enraged him further. He grabbed Shilpa's wrist roughly, the injured one, and headed towards the door after muttering a goodbye to the people at the cafe that he actually liked.
"You always do that, don't you? Run away when you don't like something."
Armaan turned around, while Rahul and Atul were ready to stop him. Shilpa grabbed his forearm, and shook her head.
"Didn't expect you to be such a coward, Armaan." Maya taunted.
Armaan ignored her, but Shilpa had just about had enough.
"What is your problem?" She demanded as she marched up to Maya.
"You have no business between Armaan and me, got it? Run along." Maya ushered.
"Oh, I don't? And who says so?" Shilpa stared, her eyebrows raised, and her body leaning slightly forward.
"I do." Maya answered back.
Shilpa laughed before tilting her head and mocked Maya "And what makes you think any of us care about your opinion."
"Who are you to say such stuff to me!?" Maya was shocked by Shilpa's reply "These people right here are just putting up with you 'cause you're Armaan's temporary fiance, okay?"
"I'd rather be put up with for being some guy's temporary fiance, than be you." Shilpa stated turning around.
"Excuse me? Do you know how many girls would die to be me?" Maya snapped.
Shilpa sighed and turned around, "Excuse yourself, as for the girls dying to be you part; I think you've got that part confused a bit. 'They'd rather die than be you', not 'they'd die to be you'. Honestly, people these days...so hard of hearing!"
Muskaan bit her lip, hard, in order to stop herself from laughing.
Rahul stared at the ground intently, after jamming a huge piece of bread into his mouth to prevent himself from laughing.
Atul coughed loudly to disguise the sound of his laughter.
Anjali smiled to herself, having a lot more self-control than others.
Armaan smirked at Maya, before moving to stand behind Shilpa, "See, there's a reason she's my fiance-to-be, and not you."
"Let's go." Shilpa twisted her head to look up above her shoulder, where Armaan's face was.
Armaan nodded, and grabbed her arm before walking out the cafe. Rahul, Muskaan, Anjali, and Atul followed in tow after a few seconds.
Maya stood there bewildered and astounded at what had just happened.
ooooooo
Anjali, Armaan, Atul, Muskaan, Rahul, and Muskaan walked over to where their cars were, and stood there in silence. Moments later, all the onlookers and passersby were staring at them, and wondering why they all were laughing so hard.
"That was...amazing!" Muskaan hugged Shilpa really hard.
"Muskaan...I can't breathe." Shilpa managed to speak despite the crushing hug.
"Muskaan, you're killing her." Rahul pulled Muskaan back.
Anjali burst into smiles, and gave Shilpa a hug as well, "I feel honoured to know you."
Shilpa laughed and then cooed "Aww, that so sweet!"
"Well, despite how interesting it was, everything was ruined 'cause Maya came." Atul whined.
"We can always go somewhere else." Shilpa smiled.
"But where?" Rahul asked.
"Somewhere, where we can just sit and talk in peace with no disturbance from others whatsoever." Armaan spoke shrugging.
"Well, as much as I'd love to, I told my parents that I'll be back around 4:30, and right now it's 4 p.m." Anjali glanced at her watch.
"I think I should head home, too." Atul smiled sheepishly.
"Well, it's just us four, I guess." Rahul smiled.
"Where do you guys wanna go?" Shilpa asked.
"I'm hungry." Muskaan stated.
"When are you not?" Rahul mumbled "Where then?"
"I'm craving Chinese food." Shilpa blushed.
"But I don't like Chinese food. Can't we go to the French restaurant?" Armaan protested.
"No. I want Chinese! I don't like French food." Shilpa glared.
"Oh, well too bad." Armaan mocked.
"Guys, guys, calm down. You guys really need to work this sort of stuff out, you know. How will you guys manage to live together? You're tastes are so different." Muskaan looked concerned.
"Well, is there any type of food you guys both like?" Rahul looked between the two.
"I don't know." Shilpa replied a frown on her face.
"How about pizza? You both like that, right?" Rahul offered.
"Okay." Shilpa reluctantly agreed.
"Pizza! Yum." Armaan announced.
Shilpa and Muskaan rolled their eyes - typical guy behaviour.
ooooooo
"So what type of pizza do we order?" Shilpa asked as she sat on a table beside Muskaan.
"I want something with no meat." Muskaan moaned.
"Oh no, we're definitely going to have meat." Rahul argued.
"We'll order separately, okay?" Armaan reasoned "You and Shilpa pay for yours, and we'll pay for ours."
"Okay, you guys wanna order first? We'll take a while to decide." Shilpa asked.
"Okay, we'll go ahead and order." Armaan replied as he and Rahul headed to the counter.
"We can order two combo number 3, one for you, and one for me." Muskaan suggested.
"What does Combo 3 offer?" Shilpa asked skimming through other deals.
"It offers two slices of pizza, fries, and a drink."
"I'm up for it," Shilpa nodded "It won't cost us more than 5 dollars each."
"What type of pizza, though? I want something without meat." Muskaan looked around at the type of pizza.
"How about that garden veggie one?" Shilpa moved forward to read "It has mushrooms, green peppers, and tomatoes. I think that's pretty good."
"I like it." Muskaan agreed.
"So you wanna order?" Shilpa asked and was greeted with a nod.
ooooooo
"So, when are you going to tell your parents?" Rahul asked taking a bite out of his pizza.
"Tomorrow." Armaan took a sip of his Sprite.
"We are!?" Shilpa looked mortified "But why so early? Can't we like wait a few days? Weeks?"
"Why?" Armaan looked surprised at her outburst.
"It may be nothing to you, Armaan, but she's the girl in this marriage." Muskaan explained. "She'll need time to prepare herself for the moving, and she'll the one suffering. You don't have to do anything, she'll have to cook, and clean. She'll be the one who has to adapt to your way of living, your tastes, and your habits. Give her time, okay?"
"Who says it's only the girl that suffers?" Rahul argued.
"Whatever," Muskaan brushed him off.
"Armaan will have to adjust to her, too." Rahul remarked.
"I'm not saying he won't have to adapt to the changes; he will. However, the sacrifice on the girl's part is always much greater." Muskaan reasoned.
Armaan and Shilpa stared at Rahul and Muskaan, amused and with a little bit of awe.
"Are you guys secretly married?" Armaan asked.
"You all got married, and didn't invite us to it, right?" Shilpa asked.
"You did get married! And you have a husband or a wife that we don't know about, right?" Armaan exclaimed.
"Did you guys have like an early marriage which ended in divorce 'cause of your endless fighting?" Shilpa inquired.
Muskaan stared at Shilpa as if she's grown another head, "No, no, no, and definitely NO! We're just observant."
"You guys have way too overactive of an imagination, okay?" Rahul rolled his eyes.
"But..." Shilpa complained.
"Whatever, now decide how you'll tell your parents yes. I mean, they're obviously going to be suspicious." Rahul commented.
"Tomorrow, me, you, and our parents will go for dinner at 7 p.m." Armaan stated looking directly at Shilpa.
"Zabardasti hai kya?" Shilpa scowled.
"Haan, hai." Armaan smirked.
"Yeah, okay. We won't be coming." Shilpa rolled her eyes.
Armaan took out his cell phone, and called his parents.
"What are you doing?" Shilpa looked puzzled.
Armaan put a finger to his lips in order to silence her, and then spoke into his phone, "Hey dad! I was wondering if you and mom were busy tomorrow at 7."
Shilpa eyes widened in disbelief; she couldn't believe Armaan was doing this.
"Why? Oh, I wanted to have dinner with you guys, Shilpa, as well as her parents to discuss the marriage."
Shilpa lunged for Armaan from across the table, but the leaned back and dodged her.
"Oh, you're free? That's great! Can you also ask her parents? I don't have their numbers, and I already asked Shilpa. So tomorrow, 7 p.m. at Imperial Garden? Thanks. Okay, bye dad. " Armaan smirked at Shilpa.
"Armaan!" Shilpa exclaimed as soon as Armaan ended the call ignoring Rahul and Muskaan's snickering "I'm not coming! I don't care what I have to do, but I won't come!"
"Really?" asked Armaan leaning forward, his eyes shining with mischief "And how exactly do you plan on doing that?"
"I...I...I'll feign sickness! I don't care! I. Am. Not. Coming. Tomorrow." Shilpa looked adamant.
"But you will." Armaan smiled at her mockingly.
And he turned out to be right...
