"Nupuuuur!" A man screamed at the top of his lungs. The torrential rains lashed the streets of Bangalore, almost drowning his frantic voice. The rain God's wrath had spread all around the city, whose streets were now empty, with no signs of life. There was destruction everywhere. "Nupur! Where are you?" The man screamed again, now at the heights of desperation. He had to find her, even if it cost him his life. After all, SHE was his life, what would life be without her? Nothing but death! She could not leave him like this. "Till death do us part", they had promised each other. He had to find her for them, for their little angel, who had stepped into their life a year after marriage. Determined by the thought, he set out to find her.
Nupur stared around the room, which seemed to be submerged in water. She tried to push the gigantic broken cupboard which threatened to fall upon her any minute, but it refused to budge. She remembered how water had come rushing into the store room, where she had locked herself to seek refuge from the monstrous rains. A few moments later, she had discovered that she was trapped in this musty room, with water all around. Her only chance of escape was if she pushed the cupboard away, but Nupur felt too exhausted now. She still tried, her mind not willing to let go of her only hope of survival.
Mayank & Nupur had been married for five years. Recently, Mayank had decided to return to India, to look after his ailing mother. He, along with Nupur & their little daughter Priyal, had shifted to Bangalore from New York. Life seemed to have settled to a normal pace as Mayank had found a satisfying job as the Senior Executive officer in InfoTech Co. & Nupur had decided to resume her job as a Reporter for a reputed daily newspaper. Then came the fateful day when sudden monstrous rains had invaded the city, shocking the people of Bangalore, who were used to a peaceful climate. That day, Nupur had been to her office on a sudden call, where she had been ordered to report about a mysterious murder which had occurred in a rich mansion, situated at the centre of the city. She had set out without further delay. When Mayank had contacted her the last time, she had told him that she was busy in her reporting, also adding her whereabouts upon his insistence. The rains continued spreading havoc far & wide. It was only when the day came to an end, without any sign of her returning home that Mayank's fears had emerged. He had tried to contact her office, but in vain. It was then that he had decided to take the matter into his own hands.
The rains seemed to have slowed down a bit now. A broken signboard told Mayank that he had reached Eastern Bangalore. His eyes at once began to search for signs of the place where his beloved wife was supposedly trapped. He half ran & then slowed down his pace, when he approached partially flooded areas, looking out for damaged gullies & creeks. Maybe Nupur was stuck up somewhere. He hoped against hope that she hadn't been foolish enough to investigate dangerous corners alone. What if she was lying unconscious in an isolated nook? No, he wouldn't get distracted by these negative thoughts. His aim was to find Nupur, & he had to focus completely on it.
Nupur alerted herself. She could hear voices coming from outside the door to the room. "Somebody help, I'm in here" she cried weakly, "please help me'..somebody, anybody!" But wait, the voices began to fade away. They were going away, hadn't heard her. That was it; she had lost all her strength. She collapsed in her trap.
Mayank ran into many buildings, ultimately coming across a huge mansion, almost similar to the one Nupur had told him about. He rushed into the doorway, which was open & checked for any signs of Nupur. Finding none, he proceeded inside the mansion, discovering that the ground floor was almost shattered. Inside, there was silence everywhere except for the dripping of water. He walked around, desperate to search for hints that Nupur was/is here. But it was as impossible as searching for a needle in a haystack. Frustrated by his futile attempts, he turned back to search elsewhere. Suddenly, he found a piece of pink fabric stuck to one of the cupboards, of which Mayank was sure, that it was Nupur's! Excited by the ray of hope, he turned to examine it closely & found that the cupboard was placed adjacent to an old store room, which was locked. "I'll have to act fast! This might be fate's signal to find her."
He started pushing the door with all his might. The door opened with a loud bang. Mayank rushed inside the store room & surveyed it. There was debris everywhere; there was no sign of any soul there. He turned to leave, but turned rapidly when he felt like he had heard the loud breathing of a person.
Nupur felt the splashing of water around her, as she slowly opened her eyes. She was still weak & unable to move. The she saw it! There was a person inside the room. She tried to cry for help, but found no voice. Gathering all essence that was left in her, she yelled out, which sounded faintly "Help, please help!"
That was it! Mayank had heard the faint cry. There was somebody trapped by that broken cupboard at the corner. Without wasting more time, Mayank rushed to help the person. He held the it firmly in both his both hands & attempted to push it aside. But the jumbo-sized cupboard was more than a match to him, it didn't move even an inch! He called out, "Is that you Nupur?"
Nupur was startled to hear the voice! It was him, it was Mayank! Her voice shook. She replied almost in a whisper "Mayank? It's me, please get me out of here Mayank". Now, Mayank could bear it no longer. All their golden moments together, the first meeting, the marriage & life after it, rushed into his mind. As though receiving a sudden upsurge of energy, he pushed the cupboard with the mightiest push possible to him. The cupboard moved a few inches. He could see Nupur's face now. She was almost unconscious. Mayank's next task was to pull her body out of the cupboard's hold. He had pulled her half, when he again pushed the cupboard, which seemed to accept defeat this time. It fell onto the floor & shattered into pieces. Mayank quickly dragged Nupur out of danger. Tiredness seemed to be taking its toll on him. But his determination overcame it. He hugged Nupur tightly & lifted her in his arms, carrying her out of the mansion. He searched for a hospital, but finding none, reached a nearby house, rang the doorbell & succumbed to exhaustion'..
Nupur opened her eyes & saw Mayank leaning beside her, deep asleep. She looked at her surroundings & saw that she was in a hospital. She sighed, kissed Mayank on the forehead & fell asleep.
"Breaking news! Senior Executive Officer saves his Reporter wife from being crushed to death!" Nupur watched her husband lovingly on the TV as he answered all questions about how he had saved his wife, from the near-death encounter. She turned around when she felt a hand on her shoulder. Mayank yawned,"Nupur, don't you want to get some sleep? Remember, Doctor has advised you complete bed rest for a few more days." Nupur smiled at her husband. He was her superhero! "Of course Mayank, I was about to. Where's Priyal?" Mayank answered her sleepily, "She's already in her dreamland. Okay, now you be a good girl too!" He tugged her arm, only to be stopped by her. She then whispered,"Mayank, thank you!" & gave him a peck on the cheek. Nupur turned away blushing, but was pulled back by Mayank, who was clearly awake now. She looked into his chocolate brown eyes, which refused satisfaction by just a small peck. Somehow melting away, she brought her lips closer as if led by a strange attraction. His lips hurriedly claimed hers & the kiss deepened slowly. They were soon drowned in the passion of love.
As Nupur lay on the bed, engulfed by Mayank in a bear hug, she recollected how he had saved her, putting his own life in danger. She glanced at her loving husband & cute daughter sleeping peacefully. They were a perfect family. What more could she ask for?
