Chapter 12:

"Ouch!" Mayank groaned as sunrays fell on his eyes. His head felt as if a huge boulder had replaced it. He reached out, expecting the table on his side, but instead, he felt the wide expanse of his bed.

Unwillingly, he squinted through his left eye to find himself in his bedroom. When did he get here? And where was Nupur then??

"Good Morning!!" Her voice brought a small smile on his face. Eager to see her, he opened both his eyes, only to undergo a sharp pain in his head, making him frown.

"Hurts no? Who told you to get all drunk and come?" Nupur scolded him as she put his breakfast tray with a coffee mug on the side table.

"And a very good morning to you too!!" He grumbled as he sat up straighter, one hand at his head.

Nupur glanced at him sideways. She had spent most of the night wondering whether he had meant whatever he said that night. Of course, he had meant it!! But did he remember even an inkling of it??

Mayank took a long sip of the soothing hot coffee. She held out an aspirin to him. He smiled as he took it. "Thanks..."

"Don't mention it... Umm, last night..." How do I put it?? She wondered.

Mayank shifted sideways. "Sit na, why are you standing??"

"Hmmm..." She sat down obediently.

"Nupur, how did I get here??"

"You don't remember??"

He shook his head as he took another sip of his coffee.

"That means he doesn't remember anything he said too?" She muttered to herself.

"You said something?" He leaned forward and gave a small smile when she hurriedly shook his head.

Nupur felt crushed. Fine, whatever he had said may have been true, but what's the point if he doesn't even remember it? She sighed.

"Umm, I guess the medicine should start taking effect within half an hour... You'll feel better then... I'll go check on..." She trailed off and got up to leave when he caught her wrist.

"Check on what, Nupsi??"

Nupur froze. She turned around to see a broadly grinning Mayank, looking as naughty as one can. He winked as she continued looking at him in shock.

"What Nupsi? Some problem??" He raised his eyebrows at her.

"Mayank Sharma!!!" She hit him hard on his shoulder.

"Arey, kya kar rahi ho?? Lag jayegi!! Arey, arey..." Mayank tried to dodge her blows unsuccessfully.

Finally tired, she sat down, looking away from him. Cautiously, he poked her shoulder with his index finger, as if testing the danger level.

Nupur turned to glare at him and raised her hand.

"Nahi Nupur..." He turned sideways and hid his face behind his arms. She reached forward and ruffled his hair softly through the gap.

Mayank slowly removed his arms and turned to look at her. She was looking down and smiling.

He reached forward, cupped her chin and tilted her face towards him. She looked at him hesitantly, as her smile faded at his touch.

"I remember and meant every word, Nupur...Or do you prefer Nupsi??" He smiled, flashing those to-die-for dimples.

She smiled back. "Anything." With that, she got up from there and left, before her thudding heart could hammer even harder against her chest; before she died out of sheer happiness.

Mayank sighed happily as she rushed out. He closed his eyes and imagined a place faraway, just him and her. He was tired of not saying what he felt, not hearing what he wanted to. He just wanted one day to themselves.

Just then his cell beeped. A message from his director. He frowned and checked the message, expecting a 'Where the hell are you??'.

Take a day off. My treat for the 200 episodes! See u guys tomorrow.

"WHAT!?!?" He couldn't believe his luck. He quickly typed a 'Thanks!!' and sent it, while at the same time sending a silent thanks to the almighty above.

"Yes Sir, you'll get the report in an hour..." Pause "No Sir, my head's not spinning!!" She rolled her eyes. "Yes Sir, I can do it!!"

Mayank snatched the phone from her hand.

"Sir, this is Nupur's doctor speaking..." Nupur gasped at him as she fought for the receiver.

"No Sir, I think she's not upto the mark today... Why don't you give her a day's rest?" Pause with Nupur's continuous hysterical whisperings at his side.

"What are you doing???" She hissed. He ignored her.

"That's very kind of you, Sir..." Pause, with Nupur finally giving up as she settled down on the couch with an angry pout.

"Yes Sir, she should be perfectly alright by tomorrow. Thank you so much." With this, he disconnected the call.

"You're welcome!!" He told her as he kept the receiver in its place and sat next to her.

She glared at him. "And what was that for??"

"You should be happy, I got you out of work!"

"Very funny...And to what do I owe this pleasure??" She commented sarcastically.

"Because WE," he pointed at himself and her "are going out..."

"Really??" Nupur forgot all her anger in a moment. "Where are we going??"

"Let's keep that a surprise, na?" He nudged her nose lightly with a finger and left to get dressed, while Nupur grinned like an over-excited kid.

"Yeh kahan aa gaye hum??" Nupur declared dramatically as their car moved at snail's pace among the traffic.

Mayank sighed. "Aaj hi iss minister ke procession ko nikalna tha??" He grumbled.

"Arey it's fine na!! Abhi toh sirf 1 baje hain..." Nupur reassured him. "Abhi traffic clear ho jayega.."

Mayank nodded hopelessly.

2 hrs later:

"Iss minister ke bachche ki to main....!!!!"

"Nupur, calm down!"

"Kya calm down, Mayank?? Pichle do ghante se hum barely 1 km bhi move nahi huey hain..."

Mayank sighed for the umpteenth time since the morning as he drummed his fingers impatiently on the steering wheel. He got down from the car to enquire how much more time it may take.

"Arey bhai sahab, 2-3 ghanton tak kuch nahi hone wala...Abhi toh aage woh bhashan bhi denge!!" An auto driver informed him generously.

"Kyaaa??" Mayank frowned as he started walking back towards the car.

Just when he thought that things couldn't get any worse, it started to rain. He rushed to the car, grumbling as he got into it.

"Ab yeh baarish aur ho gayi...I'm telling you Nupur, something's..." He paused, as he turned to look at her, only to find her completely engrossed in the rain. She had rolled down the window and was trying to catch as many raindrops as possible with her palm.

She turned to look at her, smiling widely. "Kya hua?? You don't like the rains??"

He smiled. "Not much..."

"Really?? How can you not like this??" She caught a few more raindrops and splashed him with it, giggling hard.

"Nupur!!!" He ducked his head. She laughed harder. He mock-glared at her. She splashed him some more.

"I didn't know you love the rains so much..." He spoke, once they had sobered up a little.

"Oh, I LOVE love rains..." Nupur spoke earnestly. Mayank smiled at the look of pure bliss on her face. "As a kid, I would wait for the first rain of the season so eagerly; it didn't matter whether I was in school or at home!! I just HAD to get wet... My friends and me, we would all dance like crazy!!" Both laughed at that. "Been ages though, since I've done that..." She added softly as she looked away.

Mayank stiffened at that. The underlying current of pain in her voice pinched him like his own. He reached out and covered her hand with his own and squeezed it lightly. She turned and gave him a small smile.

They sat in silence for a few moments. "C'mon, let's go..." Mayank spoke up suddenly, getting out of the car and appearing to her side in no time.

She looked surprised. "Where to? That too in this rain?"

"Well, you love the rain, and I love something else that I want you to see!!" He smiled at her as she took his hand and got out of the car.

"Are we going to walk??" She asked sceptically as he started to wind through the vehicles.

"It's not far from here...Trust me!"

Though he usually hated the rains, but today it didn't seem that bad. They were drenched by the time they slowly made way to their 'destination'. He shut her eyes with one hand to keep it a surprise and held her with his other hand to keep her in balance.

"Mayank...Where are we going??"

"You'll see...Just a minute!!"

Finally they stopped.

"Voila!!" He stretched his arms dramatically, to show her the view.

"Wow!!"

Nupur could only stare in awe. They were at the Marine Drive, one of the most beautiful places in Mumbai. The view of the sea, while at the same time, the pouring rain, made it look even more amazing.

Mayank smiled broadly as he looked at her. "It's nice na??" He asked, stating the obvious.

"Nice?? By God!! I love this place... I mean I've been here before, but never in the rain..."

"Yes, it's even better at this time." He told her.

She stretched out her free hand to feel the rain better. Mayank moved closer to her and slid his hand across her waist. Taken completely aback, she shuddered at his touch.

With his other hand, he took away her crutch. She looked questioningly at him. He smiled at her and pulled her even closer to him. She blushed at their closeness. With one fluid motion, as if it was effortless for him, he lifted her off the ground, holding her securely around the waist.

Nupur gasped as she looked around. No one was actually paying attention to them. She looked back at him; he was smiling at her as he twirled her around. She giggled as she realised his intentions. Slowly, she stretched her arms out...She was dancing, finally dancing in the rain.

She closed her eyes and faced upwards, letting the raindrops splash her face. Looking back at Mayank, she smiled, enjoying the first rain with him, the love of her life.

Finally, he put her down. She was flushed red by then; with the excitement, the happiness and of course, the shyness. Mayank felt so content on seeing her so happy.

"You know what, Mayank?" She was looking down, unable to look him in the eye.

"What?"

"Just yesterday, I saw this dream, about me dancing in the rain.... I had no clue that it'll come true so soon...." She finally looked up at him "Thank you so much!!"

Mayank was overwhelmed by this. "Dream??" She nodded. He reached over and wiped a few drops from her cheek. "I'm glad I could do so..." Saying this, he reached over and placed a soft peck on her cheek.

Smiling, she looked down, blushing furiously.

He linked their palms together and handed back her crutch. They walked along the drive, sometimes silent, sometimes talking or sometimes just looking at each other. After all, it's not every day you spend your first rain with the person you love.

Once the traffic opened up, Mayank took her to the place where he had planned on taking her on their very first date – Bay View Restaurant.

"Ok...Now I really need to know to what do I owe all this??" Nupur asked, rolling her eyes, when the waiter served them wine.

Mayank nodded his head slowly as he smiled. "Can you be nice??"

"What?? I'm just curious..." She pouted.

"Yeah yeah...Sure!"

"Please..." She nudged him.

Mayank reached across the table and took her hand in his own. He looked into her eyes very seriously.

"Because I love you and I want to make each day as special as I can for you...I know I probably told you this last night, but just wanted to make it clear."

Nupur started giggling. He was surprised.

"That's not how you're supposed to react to my love declaration!!"

"No no, it's not that...It's just..." Her voice dissolved into giggles again.

"What's it??" His tone was indignant now.

"Mayank!!" She finally managed to sober up "You wanted to clear it?? Like a crime, haan??"

He smiled "Yes, like a crime!!" She shoved at his hand, frowning.

"So??" He asked her expectantly.

"So what??"

"So, you're supposed to say something??"

"Oh yes...the wine's really good here and the food is---"

"Nupur!!" Mayank gave her a warning look. She smiled shyly as she looked away. Finally gathering courage, she looked back at him.

"I love you too, Mayank..." He let out a sigh on finally hearing those words. "I don't know why or how I deserved to have you in my life---"

"But I can't thank God enough for it!" He completed for her softly. She nodded, tears shining in her eyes. He lifted her hand and kissed her palm and caught it again in his firm grip.

Finally, they felt at peace. The feelings, the emotions that had been within them for so long were equally reciprocated... After all, there's no better feeling than knowing that the person you love the most in this World, loves you back!!
