You Can't Break A Broken Heart
Sukirti slowly opened her locker and put her stethoscope inside. Sukirti thought of the incident when she and Karan were in the changing room trying to hide from their friends. It had started with a fake fight and ended in a real one, which still made her laugh. She couldn't help but smile at every memory that she had with Karan. It would have worked out the best only if Karan had felt the same way. Now the smile she had on her face turned in to a frown completely forgotten about the changing room. She had never thought how her life would turn upside down in a second. Drashti and Mayank's constant bickering took her back to reality; she wiped her tears and slammed her small red locker. They both stopped the second they heard the slam and Sukirti felt uneasy. She hated the way they pretended everything was alright in front of her. She hated how they gave her special treatment. She walked away from their leaving a big sigh. Mayank gave a dirty look to Drashti as if Sukirti's leaving was all her fault. Just as Sukirti pushed the door of Sanjeevani's locker room, she faced Karan pulling the same door. She suddenly backed away from the door letting Karan in. Karan got in as quickly as he could, and stepped forward towards Sukirti.
"Back off", said Sukirti pushing the door and now being successful to get away from there.
Karan tried to follow her but Drashti stopped him. She didn't talk to him, nor did Mayank. Judging by their look Karan understood exactly what they were trying to say. 'It was a mistake', Karan thought.
"Mistake or no mistake, you broke her heart and you deserve all the hatred she's giving you", said Mayank reading Karan's mind.
"You are my best friend Mayank how can you say that? You know that it just happened", Karan defended himself.
"Yeah sleeping with another girl just happens", Drashti pitched in.
Karan didn't say anything else. He knew how low he had gone and he could do anything to go back. He tried saying something but he let it go. Now nothing he could say can save his relationship with Sukirti. She won't ever forgive him and the guilt would eat him alive.
Sukirti picked up the water bottle and felt the cold water running in her throat. It felt good having the cold water in her since a hot rush had come in her seeing Karan. She finished the bottle in one big gulp and called out the waiter for another one. He brought a bottle to her and she paid him $1.50. She had promised her self that she won't tremble when she sees Karan but alas that plan didn't work out. She got off from the chair and started waling towards the ladies room. She turned on the sink and felt the cold water on her skin. Another good feeling, she thought turning it off. Then she heard the toilet flush behind her and saw a familiar figure get out of the bathroom. Seeing her face a flush of anger ran from her head to her toes. Sukirti's eyes met hers and with a nasty look Sukirti ran for the door. Tears fled from her tears and it seemed there was no way to control it. She hold on to the chair she was sitting on earlier and tried to calm down. Then she saw Karan coming towards her and her body warmed up again.
"She's back?" she said letting out her rage.
"That was what I was trying to tell you back there", Karan replied.
"You must be so happy, the love of your life is back", Sukirti proclaimed raising her voice with each passing second. "You know what? I don't need this right now. I'm going home".
"Just listen to me for a minute", replied Karan trying to get a hold of her.
"Tell her I said hi", Sukirti said sarcastically before jerking away from Karan. Karan held her wrist just as she was about to go. Sukirti tried to get her hand back to her but she failed. Seeing Sukirti in pain Karan let go of her hand.
"I'm sorry", he said apologetically.
"I don't think sorry will cut it. I don't think sorry will make everything okay. And I certainly do not think sorry will get us back to the days that you said you'll forever be mine."
"I know that, but don't you think 3 months has had enough apologies that you can at least talk to me?"
Sukirti gave a strange look to Karan as if she had no idea what she was talking about. No way in hell he can get away from all this, thought Sukirti.
"Tell me one thing; do you think you could have forgiven me if I have slept with your best friend?" asked Sukirti meeting him eye to eye.
Karan paused for a second hesitating to find the right answer.
"That's what I thought", Sukirti said with no surprise on her voice.
She left the room leaving Karan silent and searching for words to convince Sukirti on how wrong he had done.
Karan saw Shilpa coming out of the ladies room, it had been almost 3 months he had seen her and he was not happy at all from her return. Why did she come? At least Sukirti had stopped sobbing all alone in the changing room. If she wasn't here he would have at least convinced Sukirti to be friends with him.
