Chapter 2: His Familiar Stranger
*Unknown Number Calling*
Armaan glanced at his iphone and waited his customary five rings before he answered. He liked to keep his girls anxious, wanting and waiting for more-more of him. The *Unknown* aspect of the situation hadn't phased him in the least; his contact list rarely had names of anyone but his family and friends. The rest was occupied by names such as "Sexy Sportsbar Girl", "Busty Brunette", "Blondie with a Booty" or "36-24-36" and no the last one was most definitely not her cell phone number. Girls would hopelessly swoon at his terms of endearment; 'baby', 'darling' 'honey, 'sweetheart' ' though very few knew that his affectionate words were, in actual fact, a result of a failure to remember names. It's not that he couldn't, it's just that he couldn't care less.
"Hey baby"
His voice often emanated a supreme sense of confidence, a trait he found to be the most seductive when speaking to girls.
"Baby?!"
The voice on the other end gasped, out of shock or excitement, he didn't know. But her voice was one that he was most definitely unfamiliar with.
"Kya hua? You don't like baby? How about sweetheart, sex-"
Noticing a white blur in his peripheral vision, he turned to the left to find Rahul, in a white tshirt, leaning on the kitchen counter staring at him in disbelief. Sure he had heard (and repulsively seen) it all but as he cracked open his can of coke he thought as hard as he possibly could at midnight on a Thurday. How the hell did this guy not get slapped hard across the face on a daily basis? How?!
He swiftly rolled a can of Coke across the kitchen counter before Armaan shot his hand out to catch it. Looking over to Rahul, he held out his can of coke to gesture a thank you followed by 'I'm talking to a hot girl-again' wink.
"NAHI nahi!! Mujhe lagta hai aap ko koi galat famii ho gayi hai. I'm Riddhima Gupta. Mein warning sign paunch gayi hoon cliff par."
Riddhima Gupta?
"Armaan tum mere liye kuch kaam kar sakte ho?"
Armaan sat down next to his soon-to-be Kirti bhabhi, offended that she'd even need to ask.
"Aap ko puchna zaroori hai kya bhabi?"
He could never refuse her attentive eyes and innocent smile, Armaan was immensely in awe of her and though she had already been part of the family for a few years, he couldn't wait to hold her hostage to the Malik parivaar.
"Kal meri cousin, Riddhima, aa rahi hai Mumbai se. Woh plane se aane se mana kar rahi hai,,,Armaan,,,"
She paused for a second while he read the apprehension in her telling eyes.
"Kya bhabi?"
"Woh ghar tak kese paunch payegi, Anguna cliff raaste pe hai."
Realization hit him as he smiled playfully.
"Hmm'aap ke jaisi dikhti hai?"
Kirti quirked her eyebrows: "Kya?!"
"Riddhima? Does she look like you?"
"Shayad pata nahi. Bahut salo ho gaye hai usse dekh kar"
"Hmmm,,,shayad? Good enough."
"Huh?" Armaan chuckled at his bhabhi's bemused expression.
"Kya?? Huh?" He mocked. He reached over to his bhabhi and cupped her anxious face.
"Aap ki Riddhima aap ki jaise hi khoobsurat ho, toh kya fikar?? Mein hoon na. Usse kaho ke jab woh red warning sign dikhe cliffs par, woh mujhe jaldi phone kare. Mein apki Riddhima aka Ms. Woman Driver ko ghar bilkul teekh taakh paunchaungaa. I promise"
Grossed out by his perverted wink, Rahul rolled his eyes and stuck two fingers in his mouth, imitating gagging. He started to walk away into the lounge where everyone had gathered.
Armaan's eyes widened as he realized who was on the other end of the phone. Oh shit. He didn't know why he had expected Riddhima to be a timid and insecure teenager but she sure as hell didn't sound timid, insecure or even like a teenager. He put it down to the fact that Bhabhi was really maternal when speaking about her.
He ran quickly after Rahul who had just stepped foot into the lounge and gave him a sharp smack on the back.
"DUDE! You spilt my-"
Armaan turned Rahul around forcefully with his arm and tried to get his attention.
"What the fu-"
Rid-dhi-ma he mouthed to Rahul whilst pointing frantically to his phone. Rahul raised his eyebrows in shock and paused before bursting in to fits of laughter. Armaan tried to silence him with his hand but failed when he escaped into the lounge in absolute hysterics.
Armaan followed him in, attracting a lot of confused attention.
"Ohhh Ms. Woman Driver! Tum lightening ki thara gadi chala rahi thi kya??"
The group of people that had been anticipating her arrival now had their attention entirely focused on Armaan in silence, familiar with the alias "Ms. Woman Driver" by now.
"Err nahi? Mein 60 ke upar gayi hi nahi"
Holy shit! She definitely did not sound like a teenager. Her voice was smooth, warm and sophisticated. A complete contrast to the love-struck squeal of the girls that he normally spoke to.
"Nahi I mean,,,did you hit trees?"
The crowd of listeners burst into fits of laughter as Armaan chuckled to himself, proud of his vulgar humor. Kirti bhabhi, however, shot him a scolding look as she tried to fight back her smile. He sighed an-
"Dekho aap madat karne aa rahe ho ya nahi?! Nahi toh mein akeli hi aa jaoongi!"
He smirked as her voice had immediately switched to one of irritation and anger. He'll be frikkin damned if she was a teenager! Sweet Armaan! Pissed off the new chick eh?
His amusement to the situation immediately dissipated as he heard her words again. Nahi toh mein akeli hi aa jaoongi. Images of the treacherous cliff in the middle of the night flashed before his eyes and made him wince.
"Ooohhh ouch! Madat bhi maang ti ho aur attitude bhi? Waha hi ruko Ms. Woman Driver mein aa raha hoon,,,baby"
Her raging breaths made him chuckle one last time before he hung up. Just because she was his bhabhi's little cousin didn't mean that he had to be any nicer to her than other girls he knows. Right? Hey I'm only risking toppling my Aston Martin 15,000 feet off the edge of a cliff to help her,,,no biggie.

Slipping and sliding down the bumpy pathways of the torturous cliff, the graceful and sexy Aston Martin Armaan had invested in was now beginning to look unsteady and uncoordinated. Fighting for control and fighting the force of gravity he wished he'd brought his 4x4 hummer instead,, this pretty car was not made for combating danger. His eyes narrowed and his jaw clenched as he battled with the darkness to make his way down the slopes. Hands, which gripped the steering wheel very rarely as a pair, were now both tightened stiff at 10 and 2. He risked letting go of the wheel to switch the AC on as the adrenaline rush made him sweat against his black shirt, which was now proving to be uncomfortable as his tense muscles were now straining against the tight fabric.
Breathing a sigh of relief when he saw road ahead was slightly less treacherous, the smooth surface of the cliff finally listened to his pleas. Slowing down he finally caught up to his racing heart and was able to relax. No longer requiring so much concentration, he resumed the song he had been listening to before he plummeted down the cliff road.

Listen to what Armaan's listening to.
Armaan relaxed to the enchanting combination of Indian instruments to the contemporary beats of the ballad. Consisting of no lyrics yet speaking volumes to him, he absorbed the beat of the track. The world didn't know his taste in music. Armaan Malik was known for his love for RnB, Hip Hop and sometimes even Rock, his love for these western genres was strong, but Armaan's love for Indian Drum'n' Bass was unknown and personal.' it was just one more secret that he locked away from prying eyes. The haunting track mystified the night into a dreamlike surrealism as he drove carefully until he came across two dim headlights in the distance.
Hmm'dimmed headlights to prevent blinding me. Smart girl.
He was impressed with her strength to endure the darkness by herself when she easily could have brightened her headlights to the maximum.
Driving down unsteadily he parked a safe distance away from her until only her Reg number was visible with his dim headlights. He would've brightened them up to see the face behind the wheel but if she was considerate enough, then he would be too.
Reaching for his phone, he found her number which hadn't yet been saved and hit *Call* and simultaneously hit the *Pause* button on his player.
"Hey Ms. Woman Driver,,,miss me?"
"Aap yaha aa rahe ho ya nahi! Yahan ek gadi-"
"Yahan ek gaadi mein mein hoon baby. Tumhara reg number T89 FGW hai?" She was definitely agitated and he could hardly blame her. Sitting out here alone in the dark couldn't have been easy and for Kirti Bhabhi's sake he wanted her home and safe. Just like he'd promised.
"H-haan" she whispered nervously.
"Then you're my girl! Follow me,,,,lekin suno meri gaadi ke siva aur kaheen dhyan maat dena. Do you understand?" If nothing else he had to let her know how dangerous it really was without scaring her. He was officially responsible for her and himself, she needed to help him by being fully focused. No pressure Armaan.
Turning the car around, he felt himself hit a couple of rocks off the cliff. What seemed like hours later, he heard the rocks hit the water below the cliff and he prayed that Riddhima hadn't.
"Haan lekin aap ki backlights ache se nahin dikhti"
"Ahh bichari Ms Woman Driver, mein meri internal lights chaloo karta hoon."
He reached for his internal light on the roof, illuminating his interior dimly.
He looked to his rear view mirror to see if he could somehow see her,,, but he got nothing but a purely black silhouette of a girl with long hair. He soon realized that she could probably see him though.
"Better baby?"
"Better" Did she just catch her breath? He put it down to her exhaustion and gave her a playful wink to lighten her mood.
"Ready baby?"
Armaan led the way trying to memorize the path and the areas to watch out for as he meandered through the snaking trail. His glances shot back and forth between the dark shadow behind him and the rocky road. Mind and body were wearing themselves out from the exhaustion but he carried on putting all of his strength in to leading the pathway and glancing into the rearview mirror at rapid speed.
To the mirror, to the path, to the mirror, to the path, to the mirror, to the path, to the mirror, to the path, to the mirror, to the path, to the mirror, to the path, to the mirror, to the path, to the mirror, to the path, to the mirror, to the path, to the- SHIT!
WHERE DID SHE GO?
His heart slammed against his chest threatening to fracture his ribs and he grinded his car to halt. He turned around to confirm what he feared he saw in the rear view mirror- nothing. No no no please god no. His heart carried on pounding and he felt his blood throbbing around his temples transfor-
*SCREEEEEEEECCCCCCCCCCCCCCCHHHHHHHHHHH*
Armaan backed his car up to find Riddhima in a deathly battle as her car struggled to fight the edge of the cliff. Shit SHIT! What do I do?! Armaan hated to feel out of control and watched hopelessly as her tires wore out with the friction of the ground. With beads of sweat trickling down the side of his face, he gripped his steering wheel impossibly harder to relieve the tension that was racing through his body. Finally accepting that there was nothing he could do to help her, he fought inside his head to find some connection to her,,,
No Riddhima! Come on FIGHT! He watched as her car tilted backwards as she stepped off the accelerator. SHIT! Slam the accelerator down!!! Please Riddhima,, god no please. His thoughts became incoherent as he pleaded for her safety. That's it Riddhima ONE MORE TIME! He powerlessly watched as her car once again tilted over the edge. RIDDHIMA SLAM THE f**kING ACCELARATOR DOWN! Her car roared and launched forward, seconds before it hit the rocky wall at the other side of the cliff, she hit the breaks so hard that the screech of the exhausted tires echoed through the air.
Armaan gasped in blissful relief and finally released his steering wheel. Panting to himself, he collapsed on the back of his seat and closed his eyes. Good girl. He gave himself a few moments before reaching out for his phone, only to realize how much his muscles were aching from the strain.
"Riddhima?! Are you okay? Holy shit,,,what happened?"
She didn't say anything and her silence was tearing him to pieces. He waited for what felt like hours until he lost his control and yelled,
"RIDDHIMA!"
He looked to his rear view mirror, hoping he'd see some sign of her'anything. Just enough to tell him that for those few seconds she wasn't hurt.
"I-I'm Okay"
The smooth and alluring voice he had only just been introduced to had now morphed in to a state of frozen fear. With a deep breath he closed his eyes out of frustration and guilt for letting down his familiar stranger. No Riddhima,,,you're far from okay,,,
"I'm getting out"
"Nahin nahin! Mein teekh hoon. Mera dhyan nahin tha, I'm sorry." Sorry? I should've been keeping an eye on you. Her apology only seemed to fuel his guilt.
"Turn on your internal light!" His voice was severe and angered.
Looking up in to his rear view mirror, her electricity burned through him as he watched her green eyes staring back at him. He studied her eyes as close as he could through the mirror and looked for anything that might show she was hurt,,,physically. His eyes lingered on hers a little longer than was necessary before he spoke.
"Aap yahan rukna chahti hai thodi der ke liye?"
He watched her eyes scan the area on the cliff they were parked on until she looked back in to his rear view mirror and shook her head.
"Teekh hai,,, are you okay to drive?"
"Haan" She sounded a little more confident as the shock of the situation had started to wear off.
"Tumhara phone loudspeaker par set karo. Raaste mein kuch huwa toh direct contact rahega,,," And I want to hear that you're okay, just for my sanity.
x.x.x.x.x.x.x.x.x.x.x.x.x.x.x.x.x.x.x.x.x.x.x.x.x.x.x.x.x.x.x.x.x.x.x.x.x.x.x.x.x.x.x
10 minutes in to the ride and Riddhima had not uttered a single word. Luckily, they had left behind the cliff a few minutes ago and were finally following a straight, unlit road to the mansion. It was past 2am and he knew Riddhima had been on the road for over 8 hours. She must be absolutely exhausted.
"Hey Ms Woman Driver" He spoke into his iphone which had been placed in its dock on the dashboard. Trying to hide his own exhaustion, he laced his words with a cheerful tone.
"Hmmm?"
No retaliation? She must really be tired.
Armaan looked into his mirror to see her. But, since they had both switched their internal lights off after leaving the cliff, he was still back to square one. It irritated him that he still hadn't seen her face yet he'd seen her nearly fall- Shit, don't think about that'
"Aap mere liye kuch kar sakti hai?"
"Hmm." Her humming was dead with fatigue.
"Next time, aap please Ms. Woman Driver se Ms, Woman Flyer ban jayega."
For the first time that night he heard Riddhima giggle and he was proud that if nothing else, he was able to make her smile on what was probably the worst night of her life.
"Kyun? Aap ko maza nahi aaya kya?" She spoke weakly yet still retained the same warmth and humor he'd heard a few hours ago.
Armaan rolled his eyes and chuckled at her sarcasm. "Maza?! Please aap ghar jaa ke maza ka definition dictionary mein check keejyega. Sab ki suraksha ke liye!"
"Sure!" he heard her smile through her voice though he knew she didn't have much more energy to speak.
"Tired?"
"Hmm.."
"Turn left now, we're here."
He smiled as she breathed a sigh of relief. Turning in to the entrance, he noticed all the lights of the mansion off except for the one. Kirti bhabhi's room,,,typical.
"Lagta hai koi aap ke liye ab tak soya nahi"
Parking his car first, he checked to see if Riddhima was following him. She turned in and parked right next to his spot, still veiled by the incessant darkness that wouldn't leave them alone.
"Chalo memsahib, aap ka stop aa gaya hai"
"Lekin aap ka naam-"
Armaan hung up before stepping out of his worn out car. He slammed his car door shut and locked it with a resounding *click*. Turning around, his stranger had her back to him while she was packing away her MP3 Player, food and other knickknacks. Her dark, long hair lay flat against her white dress as she grabbed her handbag from the backseat.
Armaan reached out for her car door and opened the driver's side in anticipation. The car immediately illuminated, and his eyes opened wide as he looked down, face-to-face with his stranger. Riddhima's lips parted in surprise as she spun around and then moved to a warm smile, she stepped out with one glistening tanned leg and then the other. She managed to hold herself up after so many hours of sitting and turned to shut the car door, killing the car lights. Once again the night was drenched with darkness and he found himself to be slightly wedged with her between both their cars. Armaan trusted the light from the crescent shaped moon, high up in the night sky, to illuminate her features. Penetrating his gaze into the deep green eyes he had been analyzing from his rear view mirror for the past few hours. He raised his hand to shake hers and whispered:
"Hey I'm Armaan, it's nice to finally meet you."
