Rahul glared at the Manager in a pained expression and reached in to his pocket for his wallet. Grabbing a large wad of cash he slammed it on the counter.
"Koi bhi room chalega! Jitna bhi mehenga sasta ho'koi pharak nahi parta lekin saath mein room nahi chahiye. Kuch toh hoga na?"
His voice was persistent and angry yet desperate at the same time. Muskaan clenched on to her room key with the sides of the card digging in to her palm. Her eyes pricked, threatening to betray her by showing her emotions to the helpless manager and a frustrated Rahul. She remembered a time when Rahul couldn't be without her, it wasn't a want but a need to have her with him... by his side.
"Sorry sir, ek bhi room available nahi hain. Hotel bilkul booked hain." The Manager repeated for the 5th time in a matter of fact tone of voice.
Rahul sighed and picked up his cash.. "Muskaan yeh-". He looked at the empty space next to him in confusion. Could she really not endure standing by him for a few minutes? He ran his hand through his fingers and took a deep breath, the tight feeling in his chest growing in to deep pain. He wasn't expecting her to welcome him with open arms but her upfront rejection hit him deep.
He walked up the stairs, avoiding the lift, to his..no their room'a broken man.
Muskaan couldn't stand there, watching Rahul desperately find ways to escape her. Sure things had changed between them but his frank bitterness towards her stung her like venom. Was she that unbearable to be around? She left in disgust with herself, tears finally strolling down her cheeks as she entered the lift to go to her new 'home' for the next two week.s.
She walked in to the luxurious marble bathroom and looked for tissues. Wiping her face clean from any emotion she looked at herself in the mirror. Cringing she looked away immediately. She hated the woman looking back at her.. with a passion.
Rahul let his room key hover over the card reader, bracing himself for what or who was on the other side of the door. Quickly unlocking the door and pulling the handle he walked in to find a thin white sheet draped on the wooden floor next to the bed with Muskaan's clothes piled into a ball at the end of the sheet.
He quirked an eyebrow at the arrangement trying to find a reason for why it was there. Looking for Muskaan around the deluxe suite, he found her brushing her hair at the vanity table next to the ceiling to floor window. She had her eyes downcast, he thought back to when they were married and how she's look in the mirror meticulously to make sure her hair was in the perfect condition.
"Muskaan?"
She jolted up and turned around to find Rahul behind her. Apologetically, she picked up her make up bag and her hairbrush and mumbled "Sorry". Walking timidly over to her sheet and she sat down cross legged and brushed her hair there.
Rahul watched her sit down and brush her hair while she looked down before a wave of realization hit him. His eyes opened wide and his heart broke to think what she had thought. She felt like she was intruding on his space. He wasn't an angel by any means but did she really think of him in such an intimidating way? Did he scare her?
Rahul walked up to her, the pain in his chest tightening unbearably. Muskaan was in her own miserable world, brushing hair that had already been brushed. Just to find something to do. Kneeling down on her sheet, he whispered 'Yeh sab kya hai Muskaan?'. Her eyes shot up; obviously he had caught her off guard.
He didn't mean to whisper'but the excruciating hurt in his chest made it unbearable for him to breathe let alone to speak..
Her eyes met his pained glare and misunderstood it as a look of annoyance. Looking around her arrangement she started thinking before she answered.
"Aur door le jaaon? Wahan? She gestured to the wall furthest to the bed. "Aapko bed se utar ne mein takleef hogi na?"
Rahul gasped at her words, horrified by her. He reminisced on his old Muskaan, her 'take no shit' attitude and her feisty demeanour. When did she break and crumble? Why wasn't he there to pick up the pieces?
He clenched his jaw, his pain turning into a fire of fury. He couldn't see her like this.
"Muskaan oot. Tum yahan nahin saugi." His tone stern and severe, his rage threatening to spew out. He'll be damned if he saw Muskaan sleeping on the floor.
Muskaan got up immediately, intimidated by his anger. She bent down to drag her sheet and the pile of clothes she had meant for a pillow to another part of the room.
Rahul couldn't take it anymore'he yanked the sheet out of her hands and picked her up in his arms. Placing her down on the middle of the bigger than Kingsize bed. She sat up, still scared by him.
He leaned over and looked at her intensely, his eyes bloodshot from the build of agony within him. She retreated in a defensive position and held her knees tight to her chest.
"Muskaan yeh sab tera hai! Sab kuch. Tum yahan chen se rahon. I won't get in your way, pretend I'm not here. Mujhe ignore karo, mujhe maro, mujhe daato lekin please mujhse daro maat. Humara rishta toota huwa hai but I don't deserve that. Iss toote huwe aadmi ko aur mat todo Muskaan."
Alonely tear escaped him as he leaned with both hands on the bed. His emotional weakness threatening to weaken him physically he sat down with his back to her. His head held shamefully in his hands.
His tear triggered Muskaan until she silently wept. Her tears dampening the pure white linen of the bedding. She reached out to console him, to make him stop hurting. But she knew nothing she could say or do right now would help them.
They were both broken''.by each other.
Anyone need a hug?
I know I do!...Hey...not everything can be rainbows and butterflies. A separation is a painful thing. A reunion is bound to cause self doubt and anxiety.
I tried to make the matter a little bit more serious than humourous because we have a lot of time for fun stuff!
As always...it's not been proofread! Sorry!!!!!
