The small bleak room was chilling.Damini rolled over and over pressing the comforter against her body trying to feel a little warm.
It was still cold.It was the coldest night she had ever experienced but somehow she couldnt bring herself to go out of her room.Prithvi was in a state. He was frantic and worried and it made him unbearable to be with.He was prone to get angry at drop of a hat.Hence she decided to pass the night in the cold rather than face him.
She passed the night dismally and jolted out of bed as soon as she saw a tiny beam of sunlight through the miniscule window.
She tied her hair back in a ponytail and walked out in the living area softly. The house was completely silent and that surprised her.She had never seen the house without Prithvi jostling around.
She turned to move to the kitchen when she spotted him.
Prithvi was lying in the black couch, fast asleep. His black shirt was open in the front and his hair lying across his forehead. On the table infront of him were a half finished bottle of whisky.
So he had been drinking last night. She thought wryly.
The thought of her kidnapper fast asleep was enough to make anyone happy but Damini knew better. The fact that Prithvi was not there to stall her didnot mean she could run away. The house was a fortress.
No matter how hard she tried she couldnt escape unless she had the keys. But it was Prithvi who had the keys...
She brightened up at the thought. If somehow she could find the keys...she could get away from her.Fighting her sudden jolt of adrenaline she rushed to his bedroom.Trying to keep the noise at a minimum she searched the table and the bed.
His table was filled with newspaper cuttings, huge books with leather bounding and small writting materials. There was no key.
She stood up chewing her lip,the hope almost fading. Then the thought struck her.
It may be on him.It was very like him to keep the key to her freedom within very narrow radius of his grip. She re-entered the living room and tiptoed across the room to his couch.
She stood there weighing her options. She could try getting the keys but she might end up waking him.
All in all it was a risk worth taking. She knelt down holding her breath and lightly patted the jeans pocket. There was no bulge there. It meant the keys were on his shirt pockets.
This was going to be impossible!
Taking a deep breath she leaned forward taking care not to wake him up.Her eyes caught sight of his face- and she floundered. With his eyes deep shut and his hair ruffled he looked amazing.
After what seemed like years her heart pounded..not with fear but with longing. It felt like she was seeing him again...not the stranger who had creeped her out,and kidnapped her.But the one who had inflicted greater damage..the one who had taken over her life by just one meeting.
Scolding herself she looked down at his pocket.A strong silver chain protruding from one.She smiled to herself. She recognised that one.She reached out slowly and gripped the chain with two fingers.Slowly she pulled it out.The key was halfway through when he shifted.
She froze,her breath caught.
Then she released it feeling relieved when he didnt move. She shifted slightly and tilted the key up.She slowly got up and tiptoed to the door, grabbing the car keys on the table.
She opened the door almost fainting with relief when she heard the faint click. She ran through the corridor and came to stand in the front garden.
She blinked.Everything was white. Then it hit her-it had been snowing all night. It was a peaceful sight-made more peaceful as she had just made her escape.
She looked around to search for the car and her eyes caught a black hint. The car was covered by snow.
Smiling broadly she tucked the keys in her front pocket and rushed forward. She had reached halfway of the garden when she heard the shout.
""DAMINI...""
She looked back and then rushed forward. She ran as she had never done before. She could hear his loud footsteps as he followed her.
She was still ahead of him but he was picking up pace.
Abandoning thought she focused on making her legs move as they never had.She didnt look back or even try to listen for his approach. She only ran...It was only when she saw she was within two yards of the car that she had her next thought.
She had done it.
Without pausing to look back she jumped towards it and then it happened.Something cracked underneath her and she found the ground give away. Before she knew what happened, cold chilled water surrounded her.She gulped hard knowing she had broken the frozen ice around the pool.
Cold water filled her lungs. She coughed out.Her arms were chilling. She knew she had seconds to react.Any moment now hypothermia would occur and she would lose the will and strength to fight. She forced her arms to move and swam upwards fighting against the tide.
Her lungs were on fire and yet she couldnt breath. Her head hit sharply something hard.Where was the surface? Why could she find it?
She tried to claw the hard ice but she couldnt break it.
Then she knew.
The lake had frozen over .It was not water but hard frozen ice on the surface-a surface she coulnt penetrate-a surface air couldnt penetrate.
She coulnt get out and neither could she get oxygen her.The thought froze over her head and she closed her eyes.
DEATH...
