Part-8

Sur and Raj reached the venue of conference in silence as both of them were lost in some thoughts.

Sur:"Here...ab mujhe jana hai finance department me...tum kaha jaoge?"

Raj:"Management...tumne presentations bana li?"

Sur:"Haa, aur tumne?"

Raj:"Yup, so gudbye and best of luck"

Sur smiled warmly and shook his hand"Give me a call when you are done, hum sath me chalenge, ok?"

Raj:"Cool. lets go"

And they both exited the car and walked into the huge building. Raj went to his Management department which was on 7th floor while Sur went to Finances on 9th floor. They both gave brilliant presentations and earned a lot of compliments. Sur finished up first and gave Raj a call which he didnt receive. She went down to the reception area and enquired about the Management conference which was still going on. She decided to sit there and wait for him. After a while, she saw him coming out of the elevator, looking exhausted.

Sur:"RAJ"he turned to see her and flashed a tired smile and waved.

Raj:"Hey!mujhe laga tha tum baad me free hogi"

Sur:"Mujhe bhi ...mene call kia tha why didnt u pick it up?"

Raj:"Acha?let me check...arre ye silent pe tha I didnt notice, sorry. Tum yaha kabse baithi ho?"

Sur:"Zyada der nahi hui...chalo chalte hai, u look tired"

Raj:"Itna kaam mene zindagi me nahi kia...but Im happy"

They went to the car and Sur drove off. They talked a bit about their experiences after which Raj cocked back his head on the headrest and fell asleep! Sur smiled as she pulled up in front of a hotel and said in a soft voice

"Raj...utho"

But he slept on. After trying a few times she placed her hand on his shoulder and shook him gently. At her touch, his eyes flew open and he looked around. Sur was smiling at him. She pulled back her hand and said"Dinner karlo fir aram se bed par so jana, ok?"

Raj straightened up, feeling a little embarassed."Mai so gaya! I dont believe this...Im sorry mujhe pata hi nahi chala.khair, ghar a gaya?"

Sur:"Nopes.aj hotel me dinner kare to chalega na? Mene socha jab tum london a hi gaye ho to thoda enjoy kar lo"

Raj looked outside the window of the car to see a hotel and said"As you wish. Ab Im feeling hungry.waha par lunch bhi nahi kar paya."

They went to the hotel and had dinner and went back to Sur's flat. Raj barely managed to stumble in and change into his nightclothes. He fell asleep as soon as his head hit the pillow.

Sur went around, doing her work on her laptop. She was also very tired but she was more used to working day and night than Raj. after a while she dozed off to sleep in her armchair with her laptop on her lap.

At 2 o clock, Raj got up to have some water and stopped by when he saw Sur sleeping on the armchair amongst her office files nad laptop. He slowly went to her and shut down her laptopand placed it in her bag. He arranged her files on her desk and turned to look at her, sleeping peacefully. He knelt beside her and looked at her beautiful face over which locks of hair were scattered. Overcoming her indecision, he lifted her in his arms carefully and placed her on her bed. Covering her with the blanket, he switched off the lights and went back to his room, smiling and confused. He slept very nicely rest of the night.

In the morning, he woke up with the sound of curtains being moved. He opened his eyes and closed them again to shield his eyes against the glare of sunlight.

"Goodmorning"said Sur as she came and stood over his bed. He opened his eyes now as she was blocking the sunlight.

She seemed in a good mood. Raj sat up rubbing his eyes and said"Morning...am I late?"

Sur glanced at the clock and said"Very. jaldi taiyar ho jao mai nashta bana rahi hu"

Raj looked up at the watch as well and sprang out of the bed and ran to the bathroom.

"hell...itni der kaise sota reh gaya mai!"

Sur laughed at him and went out of the room to make breakfast. She started working but her thoughts were clouded with Raj's innocent sleeping face. She remembered when she had woken up in the morning in her her bed while she was sure she had fallen asleep on the armchair. Her face went a little pink as she deduced what must have happened. Suddenly she realised that it was first time in years that she had slept without a sleeping pill. She felt happy as well as worried of what was happening. Raj came running and saw his breakfast on the table and sat down to eat it.

Sur:"Aram se kha lo hum late nahi honge"

Raj:"I hope so..."

They had their breakfast and left for the conference. This routine continued till 3 days and subconsciously Raj and sur became very used to each other. They would work together till late nights and talk a lot. Sur found herself opening upto him easily while Raj came to terms with the fact that this was the girl he was looking for. He accepted that he had fallen in love with her over the time, but was too scared to even drop a hint and continued with his humourous ways. Every night he would go to her room after she had fallen asleep and stare at her face shining in the moonlight. He felt an unknown pain and fear of losing her and first time in life felt helpless.

On the last day of the conference, there was a party where everybody would celebrate the success of the event.

Sur:"Raj tum jao mai nahi aungi, I hate parties"

Raj:"To tum chahti ho k mai akele jau, no thanks"

Sur:"Ab ye galat baat hai..."

Raj:"Wahi to mai keh raha hu, ye galat baat hai. Dekho, tum chalo to sahi mere sath, agar tumhe acha nahi laga to hum 10 min me waha se nikal ayenge...ok?"

Sur agreed knowing that Raj was tooo stubborn to be dealt with and he wouldnt go alone. So in the evening she dressed up in a midnight blue evening gown with silver work. She looked amazingly pretty and Raj tripped over when he saw her. Her long hair fell in soft layers down to her slender waist and her makeup was minimal- only kohl and lipstick. A silver bracelet was tied around her wrist. Raj's mouth actually fell open but Sur's cell phone rang at that time so she didn't notice. He quickly schooled his expression and adjusted his tie. He was wearing a black designer suit. Sur disconnected the call and looked up at Raj.

Sur:"Ready?"

Raj:"Hmmm...You look really beautiful Sur" He said slowly thinking what an understatement!

Sur smiled:"Thank you so much...you are also looking very handsome. But tumhari tie...mai thik kardu?"

Raj nodded and Sur stepped close to him and straightened his tie. He smelled her heavenly perfume and forced his eyes to look sideways.

They went to the party and all along the way Raj was uncharacteristically quiet simply because he couldn't think of anything to say and he didn't want Sur to catch him when he was staring at her and so he decided to keep his eyes off her. Sur noticed this and said "Raj are you feeling well?"

Raj looked up and stared at her. "Haan par kyu?"

Sur: "Wo tum kabse itne chup chap baithe ho isliye puch rahi thi."

Raj: "Kamaal hai, jab baat karo to bahut bolte ho aur jab chup raho to tabyet kharab hai!"

Sur laughed and Raj looked at her in awe. She looks so beautiful when she smiles. After a while they reached the beautifully decorated hotel lawns where a party was going on in full swing. Raj held out his arm and Sur took it, laughing. They went in and started talking to different people they had come across during the conference. Some people even mistook them as a couple which pleased Raj a lot but Sur felt uncomfortable.

After a while they danced to the slow music playing there and had food. All this time Raj was chattering about one or other thing, commenting upon some stupid people and enjoying Sur's company thoroughly. Sur also realised that she was happy in a business party for once and played along.

Raj had to stay there for only 4 days but his flight got cancelled and his trip was extended to 7 days. He thanked the bad weather. For the next 4 days, Sur took and off from her office and they went to see around the city, laughing and enjoying. Raj felt these were the best moments of his life as he packed his luggage for leaving the next day. He had planned to propose to her just before leaving so that she could think about it calmly and to avoid awkward moments. The thought still scared him but he wanted to do it ASAP because it was getting tougher and tougher to hide it from her. He couldn't believe he had fallen in love with her so soon but he was very sure of his feelings. He knew this was no crush or infatuation as he had had enough of them to know the difference. This was love.

Sur was helping him, handing him his belongings which were now scattered in every corner of the flat. When they were done, Sur sat down on his bed and said "Thats all I think....packing ho...check karlo kuch reh to nahi gaya?"

Raj sat down as well and said, "Mere hisab se to sab ho gaya hai, par fir bhi kuch reh jaye to tum akey de jana..." he winked

Sur: "Tumhara saman wapis karne mai India tak au? I don't think so..ek kaam karna tum hi a jana.."

Raj: "Kyu au mai? Meri bari ho gai ab tumhe mere ghar ana hoga, samjhi?"

Sur: "Thik hai, mai a jaungi...khush?"

Raj: "Jis din tum mere ghar aogi wo din meri zindagi ka sabse khoobsurat din hoga"

Sur: "Acha, kyu?"

Raj: "Kyuki mai to sabkuch faila ke rakhta hu na, tum aogi to samet k rakhogi to mera ghar bhi khoobsurat lagega!"

Sur: "Uske liye ek naukrani rakh lo"

Raj: "Nah...3 naukraniya bhaag chuki abhitak mere kamre ki halat dekhkar... Mai to soch raha hu shadi kar lu"

Sur: "To kar lo...ab to tumhara hi number hai na"

Raj: "Nahi, pehle tum shadi karlo fir mai karunga."

Sur's good mood vanished to be replaced by closed expression. Raj immediately knew that he had touched a nerve. She looked away from him and he was surprised.

Raj: "sur... did I say something wrong? I am sorry par hua kya tumhe kya bura lag gaya?"

Sur looked at him and smiled. "Tumne kuch nahi kiya Raj bas mai hi... dekho mujhse kabhi meri shadi ki baat mat karna ok?"

Raj was even more taken aback at this request.

Raj: "Par kyu Sur? Dekho ajtak mene tumse tumhari zindagi k bare me koi sawaal nhi pucha kyuki mujhe lagta hai tumhari pichli zindagi me kuch aisa hua hai jo tumhe taklif deta hai... Magara j ek dost ke haq se kya me tumse puch sakta hu k kyu tumhaste haste ruk jati ho? Aisi kon si baat hai jo tumhe itna darr aur dukh deti hai k tum uske bare me baat tak nahi karna chahti?

Sur was unable to meet his eyes and she stood up and walked to the window, resting her head on the frame. Raj waited for her to speak. After some long moments, she said "Raj tum itne ache kyu ho? Pata hai, mai tumse apna dukh baatna chahti hu...par abhi mai aisa nahi kar sakti cuz speaking about it is unbearable. Tum mere sabse pyare dost ho...tumhe sirf itna bata deti hu k meri shadi ho chuki hai... kab kaha kisse ye mat poochna...jis din mujhe lagega ke mai us dard ko sehne jitni strong ho gai hu, us din tumhe sabkuch bata dungi...."
