It was amazing how these things work- I for one never believed in the concept of sanctity of marriage.I could not believe that a few simple words and rituals could impact one's belief so much- That a few rounds around the holy fire could make you believe that you belong to someone for life.
Ofcourse I believed in marriage but I placed more importance on the promise that two people made to each other and their commitment towards each other. But I was wrong.
I was totally and completely devoted to Gunjan but as we moved down the rituals some bound me to her spiritually and emotionally.I felt the total weight of what we were doing- the promise of being each other's,to hold the other's hand for eternity and to ensure that we were one unit for the rest of our lives.
Staring into Gunjan's face as I applied sindoor I saw my wonder reflecting on her face. She looked like an angel, more than anytime before. Her eyes spoke volumes, her face faintly rouged and her expression demure- she took my breath away. And she was mine- as I was hers- As the pandit spoke we were bound together in an age-old bond – something way beyond us
I made through the rest of the evening in a dazed wonder.I had done it – gotten married. If anyone had said, six months ago, that I will be bringing home a bride I would have laughed out loud. What a momentous decision I had made.I stared at Gunjan – as she sobbed in her mother's arms.
It was then Nupur looked at me,her eyes full of faith and pleading. My heart melted.I was responsible for Gunjan now- she was mine to take care of.Mrs.Bhushan had given her to me,to care and to love and cherish.I was responsible for her smiles and her tears.
Damn!!
I should stop thinking- This was way too big.I turned away and smiled at Diya-
"I am so happy to see you here Candy"I said, hugging her
She chuckled,a dry sort of sob embedded in it.Her eyes were overbright when she replied.
"You too Sammy.I hope you are happy-though .."she trailed off and looked away embarrassed
I stared at her wondering what thought she had silenced. But there was not much time to wonder- Soon we moved towards our car.I saw Nupur and Devika Aunty- Mom- crying as they waved.Gunjan stared out of the car with longing, her tiny body shaking with silent sobs as she waved back.
I sighed taking my shehra off- That was a nuisance. Finally this was over.
I glanced at Gunjan- She was staring at her house with utmost sorrow.I tried to see it through her eyes. She was leaving herself behind- Her childhood, her family and Gunjan Bhushan behind.
As I saw her tears trailing down her cheek I vowed to myself- Gunjan Mehra will be twice as happy as Gunjan Bhushan- She would not regret this – not for a single minute.
Smiling I did my first husbandly duty- I circled her wrist- She looked up startled.Staring into her eyes I smiled again.
"Chashmish- It will be okay- I promise"I said, meaning the words completely
Slowly she smiled back,nodding.
The bridal suite was gorgeously decorated. It was lit by hundreds of floating candles situated at various corners of the room. The room glowed golden and the red roses on the bed stand netting looked pink.A mixed fragnance of roses and freesia engulfed the room.
Gunjan stood bewildered in front of the window. The homecoming rituals had been quite nerve-wrecking.Try as much as she did,the contrast between the home she left and the grand Mehra residence screamed at her.She stared at the sophisticated wedding guests- the ones who spoke of designers and brand names so fluently. She wondered whether they would ever speak on a subject that she could venture some information. She shook her head and sniffed.
The tears were coming again- How could she miss her sister and mother so much already? She craved for her small dark bedroom – where she would be reading some book and Nupur Di would be entertaining her with the latest filmy gossip.
She swallowed the lump and gazed out of the window.Suddenly there was a click-She looked back as the door closed –She saw Samrat lock the door.
A solid something slid down her throat- She clenched her fist.
Its okay Gunjan- Relax!!
She swallowed hard, trying to soothe herself. She closed her eyes, hearing him move about. She heard him move closer and a rustle of her fabric told him he was standing infront of her.The thought almost made her faint- Her fist clutched her lehenga tightly. She kept her eyes closed.
He leaned forward- She felt his breath on her neck-
Stop this Gunjan-Open your eyes- tell him that you want to wait-
"Chashmish…"he said softly in her ears
She opened her eyes to see him.He was staring into her eyes with tenderness.
"Have you got any idea how beautiful you looked today?"he said in a tender tone
She felt a flush of pleasure. It was hard not to be pleased. His eyes dropped down to her lips and then to her neck. She followed his eyes and blushed harder.
He glanced up to see his bride flushing red.Tilting his head with a signature Samrat smirk,he reached out to touch her elbow. She felt something brush against her shoulder and then his hand moved down caressing her hand.
Her eyes dropped down. She trembled as he rubbed small circles on her palm, wondering what she was feeling and why was she feeling them. She closed her eyes.He gripped her wrist and then entwined their fingers. She felt him move closer-
The trembling grew inside her.She could feel her hands shaking.A hand gently cupped her face while the other traced a line around her chin.
"-Gunjan.."he whispered
Her eyes fluttered open.He was standing very close to her staring at with something close to wonder.
Tell him Gunjan- its your chance-Say something Gunjan
"S-sa-Samrat.."she began
He leaned close to her and kissed her cheek. She felt something melt within her-His hot breath trailed down to the hollow of neck and she grabbed a clutch of her lehenga more tightly. His lip touched her neck trailing a path as they moved against her neck. Her breathing hitched. She started shivering.Instinctively he pulled her closer groaning.
"You drive me crazy Gunjan-"he said against her neck
Her eyes reopened. She was within his arms and he was touching her as no one had. While a part of her was experiencing feelings she did not know existed, the other woke up at his words. It felt wrong to be so close to a stranger-
Except this was no stranger- He was your husband- he has every right to-
But a marriage meant more than being with her this way-
She felt him move as his lips touched her earlobe.Again she felt herself shiver.
No..No..Stop this-
She stood still, willing herself to speak. The words took too long to form.It did not help that Samrat was holding her hands captive in his own as kissed her chin.
Maybe she should just- give in
His breath against her skin did not help matters. She felt herself against him and almost sighed.
It felt so good.
The thought suddenly jarred her.She jumped back blushing. She could not believe she had thought that. She had a sudden urge to vanish or crumble down and cry.She took calming breaths and turned around.
"Gunjan?!?!"
She could hear the confusion in his voice. She kept her eyes on the wall.
He came to stand infront of her.Seeing him the tears pooled out.
"Gunjan what happened?"
She shook her head
"Are you crying?"He said moving forward.
She stepped back and crossed her arms fighting temptation.
It didn't help. With two small strides he came to stand next to her,He turned her around
"What happened? Was it something I said or did?Tell me.."
She shook her head again, wishing he would let her go.
Sighing he made her sit down.Kneeling infront of her he said.
"Look I know you are not the kiss and tell types. But I am your hus-husband now.We need to be able to talk-You should be able to tell me anything. So maybe you should start it now."
She nodded,sniffing.
"You are right.Its-just-that its all so sudden Samrat.I want to.."she trailed off.She did not know how to say this.
"You want to.."he encouraged
"To wait"she said in a small voice
His eyebrows furrowed in confusion
"Wait for what?"
She blushed a deep maroon. His frown disappeared.
"Oh..Oh that!"
Feeling more embarrassed than ever she nodded. His eyes were on the face.
"How long?"
What?!!
"I-I-I don't know."she said stumbling over the words
"You don't know.."
Her eyes held an accusation now
"Samrat…"
He sighed
"Okay- okay- Its just that this will be difficult for me.You have no idea how crazy you drive me."
His eyes looked at her and something melted in his eyes
"But this is about you and I promised myself I will do whatever it takes to make you happy. And if it takes this- then am willing to wait forever."
She smiled and he nodded. Then he grinned
"But you tell me when you are ready okay?"
Her smile disappeared.Oh my God- she had to tell him that and here she thought she was having the most embarrassing conversation in her life.Apparently a more embarrassing one was coming in the future.
A/N- one reason I chose to do the wedding from Samrat's pov is that normally we girls romanticize weddings but I wanted to see how guys see it.I hope I could do justice.
And for the next part- the wedding night- its one of the SAjan parts I loved writing. This is my treat for my sajanians.
P.S- To mayurians and diya-ians (if there are any) dont complain abt their absence. This was sajan's night - and I chose to not let anyone steal their thunder.Do let me know what you think
