A Restless Night ---- 2
Kranti stood silently looking into the horizon but not really seeing anything. She felt as if her parents had died just today. As she immersed their ashes, she had felt her energy ebbing away from her. It was the end of the road in a way. Today had been the worst day of her life. She lost everything today. Her family if she could call it one, her parents last connection, her childhood, her faith and her joy of living. Her future seemed as dark and bleak as the sky overhead. The question that she asked time and again……..why her? She didn't know what life had in store for her and right now she was too dreary to even think about it. Sohan tauji had been arrested and would probably be taken far away from her. Who did she have whom she could call her own? No one. What kind of a life had she lived so far? A life full of instability. The two people who cared for her were Tauji and Nirmal di and both were beyond her reach right now. What was going to become of her? She felt like a fresh swimmer who was struggling to stay afloat on a choppy sea.
She was so lost in thought that when she felt a hand on her shoulder, she jumped out of her skin. She swung around.
"You……. Why do you always sneak up on me like that?" Her voice was full of emotion.
"I'm sorry." He apologised. "It's just that it's late and you should get some rest."
"Rest? What rest?"
"It's been a long day and you need to ……."
"I know what I have to do, you don't need to tell me anything!"
"C'mon Kranti, you should ……," he started to take her arm. She shook his hand off.
"Get away from me." She hissed.
"Believe me I understand what you are going through right now."
"Really? How come Raj?" She looked at him in a mocking way. "What do you understand?"
"It's been a sad day and …."
"Sad day? Sad day? It's been the worst day for anyone………but what would you understand?" She observed.
"I understand your predicament, I understand your sorrow…….."
"You understand? How come Raj?"
"I do … you know. Why do you …."
"What would you understand about me ……. in the true sense? We come from diverse backgrounds."
"And…?" Raj was eager to know. He was getting an insight into her very being, and he wasn't going to miss the opportunity.
"I am not a witness and don't get clever with me." She was astute. Raj was slowly getting convinced that she would have made an excellent lawyer had she been able to go Law College.
"What are you thinking?" She asked suspiciously.
"Why, nothing really."
"Liar! I know when you are thinking of a way to get round someone. You have …."
"Oh you think you can read me, Kranti?"
"I know you are up to something."
His eyebrow shot up. "How? I am intrigued by your discerning ability."
"The way you absently scratch your thumb with your forefinger…….."
He smiled wickedly, "how naughty of you to study me slyly."
Kranti chose to ignore that stupid remark. Her chin lifted at an angle and she told him that he wasn't worth a penny in her eyes.
"I am not that bad, you are making me out to be a classy villain!" said Raj.
"That's exactly what you are!" She said triumphantly. "Callous and unfeeling too!"
"Now that's going a bit too far I think," observed Raj.
"No, it happens when you come from such a rich family ………… you become uncaring."
Raj didn't like this statement one bit. She knew nothing of him and she had no business to jump to such conclusions. He kept his temper on a leash since he knew what she had been through today.
"Really?"
"How dare you come to mamaji's house pretending to be Sanjay? Did you think you could do as you please because we were below your station financially?"
"We were not going to stay with your family. But it's unfortunate that the car broke down and your mamiji insisted we do."
"Oh so you condone that incident? How convenient!"
"I don't condone it. It happened and it was a mistake. I did apologise."
"Can you hear yourself talk? Can you believe your own arguments?"
"Have you put me in the witness box?"
"The great Rajvir Lal, born with a silver spoon in his mouth, went to the best of schools and colleges and of course to England to study law. Never lacked money or parent's acclaim, stayed on the side of the rulers steadfastly whether it was moral or not."
His narrowed. "What is this all about? Is this your resentment? Do you resent me for having a loving family who gave me the love and care I needed?"
"Stop twisting my words!"
"Are you unhappy because I got what you didn't?"
"I am not petty. Why would I be upset because you had a wonderful time as a boy and even now?"
"Then tell me why you are upset."
She opened her mouth to say something but then decided not to. She turned away. She leaned on the balcony ledge as she looked out. She took a deep breath which was difficult to pull in. She shivered slightly. Two arms came from behind and his hands rested close to hers. He wasn't touching her but was just a hair's breadth away. She suddenly felt nervous.
She felt his breath fanning her ears as he spoke, "Kranti, I know you've longed to have the closeness of a family. I know it's very important to feel the circle of your parents' love."
She nodded. She slowly turned and was embarrassed to find him so close to her. She had nowhere to place her hands so she clasped them in front of her.
"I don't resent you Raj, I really don't."
"I know," he spoke softly.
She looked up. Her black eyes looked like water pools in the middle of the night. His brown eyes that looked down drank in their beauty. The barricades had fallen away and sorrow was reflected in her eyes. She swallowed down her pain. His eyes moved to her throat as she gulped.
"Yes," she said, "I did want to have a life like yours. But it was not to be. My parents died in the lathi charge and I don't know how long I waited at home for them to return that day. But they never came. I sat on the doorstep weeping for Amma and Bauji. Soon the house was flooded with people. Karim chacha was the first to reach. His wife took me in and tried to feed me something but I wouldn't eat……I only wanted my parents. They quietly told me what had happened. I almost died then. Till today there has been this one thought that echoes in my mind, why didn't they take me with them? I would have gone with them and not got left behind." Tears glistened on her lashes.
Raj looked down at her. Her wet hair falling down her shoulders, her clasped hands in front of her and her damp lashes made her look beautiful and soulful. He couldn't move nor could he take his eyes off her.
"Kranti…..that's a dreadful thought. I am glad you are alive."
She looked at him and tried to search for sincerity in his brown eyes.
"Stop worrying," he bade her.
"I'm not."
"You are."
"How can you tell?"
"I always know when you are distraught."
"Oh you think you can read me, Raj?" She was throwing back his words at him.
"I can read you."
Her eyebrow shot up. "How? I am intrigued by your discerning ability."
"The way you clasp your hands," he looked down pointedly at her hands, the way your eyes turn into jet stones and …….."
She smiled wanly, "how naughty of you to study me slyly."
"I am not that bad, am I?" asked Raj.
He hoped he had been able to put her at ease.
"Raj ……. Thank you for everything," she said softly.
Raj brought forward one hand. "Friends?"
"No we can never be friends."
He slowly withdrew his hand but she caught his wrist. He smiled. He realised he was getting to like her touch especially the way she held his hand.
"Now what are thinking, Kranti?"
"Nothing."
"Nothing? I don't believe you."
She stayed silent. So he continued, "I don't mind of course, but why are you caressing my wrist with your thumb?"
She gasped in shock. She hadn't realised what she'd been doing. She crimsoned with shame. She dropped his wrist as if it were a hot iron rod.
"You are a devil, Raj."
"Shhhhh now. It's bed for you, young lady."
"I am staying right here."
"No you're not……you need to sleep."
When she didn't move, he leaned forward and swept her up.
"Put me down, you oaf."
"Shhhh don't make a noise….. otherwise tongues will start wagging."
He laughed as she reddened once again. She looped her arms around his neck and looked up at him.
Two stars winkled brightly in the sky. Two souls hoped their daughter would now be in safe hands. They looked at the entwined figures and sent a blaze of magical stars to shine on them.
