PART 2
Ridhima took an aim at the swaying target infront of her. She took a deep breath and mentally recited her usual prayer, and pulled the trigger. It missed the aim by inches, Damn, she swore under her breath and began to reload her gun.
She was about to lift her gun again when her cellphone buzzed. She momentarily flinched by the sudden noise that cut through her concentration. Feeling irritated with whoever had the audacity to disturb her during her practice sessions, she pulled her phone out of her waist pocket and saw 'Yadav' flashing on the screen. She let out an exasperated sigh and rather harshly, flipped the cover open, "What ?!" She spat out irritably.
"Ridhima, you need to come to my office now. We have a plan" Yadav spoke, in his usual levelled and calm voice.
Ridhima rolled her eyes and said, "Plan for what ? Are you going to send me to kill another old man without informing that his oh-so loyal son will also come along ?" she asked, raising her voice. She had never actually forgiven Yadav for his clumsiness in Varun Malik's case. She knew that even while they spoke, Armaan Mallik would be planning to nail his father's murderer. She could say this because she could easily identify with his situation. Perhaps it was one of the reasons why she had overreacted the other day. It is not so easy to completely erase the memory of seeing your loved one die infront of your eyes.
Yadav sighed on the other end, "Look Ridhima, I know you're annoyed with me, but I'm trying to cover up for my mistake and I need you to co-operate, alright ?" He said in a weary but firm voice. "I need you to come down to my office right now"
Ridhima fell silent after sensing the finality in his voice. She knew she could bark at him and hang up on him right now, but she had a feeling this was something important. Yadav had never disturbed her during her practice sessions before. She took a deep breath and said, "Fine Yadav. I'll be there in 10 minutes. But whatever it is, it better be something substantial. I'm not used to being hauled out of my practice sessions for a chit chat over coffee" She finished and hung up without waiting for his answer.
************************************
"Have a look at this" Yadav said as he pushed the newspaper towards her. They were seated in his office. It was almost midnight and Ridhima was hoping to make this, whatever it was, really quick. She wanted nothing more than to go back home and sleep.
Ridhima sighed and snatched the newspaper from his table. She leaned back into the chair and began reading the headline.
"I will not pardon who ever killed my father" - Armaan Mallik.
A weary but determined Armaan Mallik finally let his guard down on Friday and spoke to TOI. He looked extremely worn out, it seemed as if he had not slept since his father was brutally murdered infront of their new cotton plan in Armori. Although he seemed tired, there was an inevitable glint of anger in his eyes. He seemed vindictive.
"I will not pardon whoever killed my father. I will hunt that person down, even if I have to search every corner of the Earth, and make sure he is thrown behind the bars..for the rest of his life" he spoke, a sense of vengeance being exuded from every word. Why not a death sentence ? We had enquired. "That would be easy death for him" he spat out.
Armaan Maillik is clearly in the mood for revenge.
Ridhima finished reading and let out the long held breath. She could almost feel Armaan's anger. He was certainly in the mood for revenge and it didn't look like the feeling was going to die down anytime soon in near future. For one fleeting moment, she felt scared. Scared that she would have to face the consequences of Yadav's mistake. Although there was no chance that Armaan would find her, Their organisation was a fortress, like a complex web. Their identity had been hidden for almost 3 decades until the Interpol somehow caught wind of their existence, but had been unable to nail them because they always functioned underground, and the main premises was like any other office building. Lisenced by the govt. themselves. Yet, Ridhima found herself getting slightly restless. The phrase 'What if' lingered in her mind for more time than she had thought.
Before she could resolve her tension, Vivek flipped the newspaper and said, "Read this aswell". Ridhima glanced at him and saw the calmness with which he was dealing with the situation. He never panicked. It was one of his better qualitites. Completely unlike Ridhima. She picked the newspaper up again and began to read.
Dominion Insurgents top the list, yet again - CBI
On Friday, one of the CBI officers told us that the much discussed about group among the police departments across the globe might just be the people they're looking for. "We highly suspect The Dominion insurgents to be behind Varun Mallik's murder. We observed that they have a tendency to murder influential people, particularly businessmen" He had said, sounding rather convinced.
The Dominion insurgents seem to have grabbed the limelight recently. Interpol recently confirmed their existence and has informed us that they are behind the numerous killings that took place randomly across the globe. "They did a pretty good job of hiding themselves for almost 3 decades. As they're not estabilished in one country, and flee as soon as their mission is achieved, we're finding it difficult to catch them. Besides, it seems that they're using inflitration as a tool to get past security forces"
Although the police have not yet gathered enough evidence to prove the doubt in the court of law, but they say that it's just a matter of time before they do. Security measures have been tightened at all railway stations, and the two airports. "We think that they are still in town, and we want to catch them before they can flee again" said another police officer on Friday.....
And the article went on to explain the history of the dominion insurgents. Ridhima gently laid the newspaper on the table and leaned forward in her chair. Before she could speak, Yadav beat her to it and said "Now, we're not worried about the police or the Interpol. They're a worthless bunch of dafts on their own. The problem is Armaan Mallik. He has enough money to buy the Police department and turn it on it's ass. And my sources tell me he already has. The department is trying to track the killer, in this case you, like never before. And like the article says, we're the top suspects, even in the eyes of Armaan Mallik" he finished in one breath, retaining his calm and composed posture.
"So bottomline is..?" Ridhima enquired after few moments of silence.
"Bottomline is that we need to get rid of Armaan Mallik as soon as possible" Yadav said, "And you will have to go undercover to do that"
Ridhima's head shot up at that and she stared at him with disbelieving eyes, "Yadav, are you serious ?"
He nodded and without wasting time to explain and continued, "You will have to pose as his secretary. Mallik Enterprises Pvt. Ltd. recently floated an advertisement. Once you're selected, which you have to make sure that you are, you will have to pretend to fall in love with him. Once he has fallen for you aswell, you will grab the first chance and kill him and -"
Ridhima interrupted him, "Wait a sec.."
"and make it seem like an accident" Yadav finished, without paying attention to Ridhima. She continued to stare at him startlingly, as if someone had just dropped a ton of bricks on her head. She had killed Varun Mallik, and now she was supposed to fall in love with his son ?! The idea seemed warped, and it seemed that lately, Yadav's brain was beginning to rust.
"You're implying that I, who killed Varun Mallik, need to go and get all cozy with his son ?!" she finally asked, in an incredulous tone, after the fact that Yadav was actually serious settled in. Yadav nodded coolly, in contrast to Ridhima's disbelieving stare.
"That's exactly what I'm implying" He said, not sounding doubtful even for a second. Ridhima shook her head slowly, trying to get Yadav to see how ridiculous his idea sounded to her. The action had no effect on him. Instead he looked like he wanted to cut this conversation short and get back home as soon as possible, something Ridhima would have gladly done 20 minutes ago, had her boss not dumped the garbage on her.
She sighed and cleared her mind of all thoughts, even if she did accept this assignment, what was the point ? why couldn't she just do what she was best at ? Take a rifle and shoot Armaan Mallik down, the way she had killed his father. Before she could open up her mouth to express her thoughts in words, the answer came automatically to her. She had said it herself.
"We can't do that" Ridhima cut him off yet again, "The police must have deduced that after Varun Mallik, it is likely that Armaan would be in danger aswell. They must have tightened the security around him, along with his personal security. It would be impossible to reach him till the time this matter doesn't die down, by which time, Armaan will make sure that the culprit behind his father's murder is tracked"
She seemed to be at a loss of words at that. It was true. There was no way they could kill Armaan Mallik so easily. Thinking rationally, going undercover seemed to be the only workable option. They could flee, but Armaan would be a constant hurdle. He swore to track them down at any cost. The only permanent solution was to kill Armaan. She sighed in defeat and said, "Fine. I'll do it"
Yadav nodded curtly, "Meet me tomorrow morning at 8 am. I shall tell you the entire plan. Your tickets, accomodation arrangements etc." and with that, he got up and strode out of the office, leaving Ridhima in deep thought.
How am I going to fall in love with him ? She thought as wrinkles of worry formed on her forehead. You just have to pretend to. Once he is in your grasp, you have to execute him and come back. Simple. Although it didn't seem so simple. It was like walking towards a man who wants to kill you, and making him fall in love with you, on top of it all. Panic seemed to resurface as she tried but couldn't understand how she was going to do this.
C'mon Ridhima, you're smart. Very smart. You have gone on undercover missions before, she thought, trying to calm her nerves, except that none of them involved falling for someone who was out to kill you.
Damn. What the hell is your plan Yadav ?!
