Chapter Two
The atmosphere around Sanjeevani changed significantly—calm and soothing breeze surrounded the small world inside the highly elevated walls of the hospital. Everything was back to its place wherever it belonged. Patients were comforted with proper treatment and care, whereas their relatives relaxed having a sigh of relief, with a certain assurance that their loved ones are safe now. It was quite contrary compared to the yesterday's situation where the place was filled with havoc; a pure mess. It seemed like any other normal day at Sanjeevani…Dr. Shashank Gupta looked around his hospital as a pleasant smile formed at the corner of his lips; a beam of satisfaction.
He drove as fast as he could just when the traffic jam at last started moving. Sadly, he had to slow down again, noticing another long line in front. His hands were glued to the horn as vehicles ahead of him didn't seem to budge from their place…moving slower than turtles! He didn't care if some people have practically started shouting at him. He knew only one thing at this moment…getting to Sanjeevani on time. Armaan Mallik cannot afford to be late on the first day of this prestigious job. Finally, he saw those cars actually move. Armaan smirked wickedly patting himself on the back…the loud and irritating noise of the horn seemed to work on the lazy bones ahead of him.
Armaan literally ran towards the tall iron gate of Sanjeevani…his destination. He was showered with more weird looks, some curses and just plain stare on his way as he ran into a number of people, rushing towards the main desk.
*********************
Armaan gave a light knock on the door, staring quietly on the sign which said "DR. SHASHANK GUPTA" in black bold letters. His first meeting with Dr.Gupta, the trustee of Sanjeevani, had surprisingly gone well. He was a man of rules, strict, professional and to the point. Armaan really admired Dr. Shashank and somewhere in his heart wished that one day even he might be able to achieve a position like this.
"Come in!", a sharp voice registered his ears, making him come out of his thoughts. Armaan quickly combed his strikingly dark hair with his fingers and straightened the collar of his white shirt. "Hello Dr. Armaan Mallik.", Shashank shook his hands firmly with the young doctor. Armaan smiled and took a seat as instructed.
"Dr. Armaan, meet Dr. Rhidhimma Gupta.", Shashank said in between of their discussion. He pointed to the girl sitting a few feet away on a small couch. Armaan turned himself a bit to get a clear view. The young woman was dressed really simply in faded blue jeans and a baby blue shirt. No one would have guessed that she is actually a doctor if she hadn't worn that white lab coat over—she looked like a typical teenager. She was currently engrossed in a file, not caring whoever was present in the room, seemingly oblivious of her surrounding.
"You will be working under her supervision for the next few weeks. I know that she is a bit younger than you and maybe even not as experienced…but please don't feel underestimated as I believe that Rhidhimma knows Sanjeevani well. She has completed her internship from here only. So, she'll be able to help you adjust here.", he explained. "Don't worry sir! I don't think you need to give me an explanation. After all, we are here to obey your orders. I won't disappoint you Dr. Shashank!" Armaan said confidently, shaking hands with the dean again.
*********************
She hated him at the first sight. Just look at the way he bragged about himself, overconfident. She hated the way he spoke to her father. Yes, Dr. Shashank Gupta…her dad, Dr. Rhidhimma Gupta's father! Every bit of their conversation pierced through her heart, particularly his last words that were still floating in her ears. She curled her hands into a tight fist as she felt the anger taking over. He was just another one of those overly impressing jerks! Rhidhimma's expressions quickly transformed as she smiled evilly on the already cooking in her head. It was now her job to make his life hell in Sanjeevani. Just wait and watch Dr. Armaan Mallik!, she whispered smirking to herself.
Armaan shifted his gaze as he saw her walking towards him. Her pitch black hair waved sideways, tightly tied in a ponytail. He was about to pull out his hand for a cordial introduction, but her voice restricted his attempt. "Follow me!", she ordered strictly, with no expression and walked towards the door without waiting for him. Armaan looked down, somewhat disappointed. Nevertheless, he shrugged the feeling and made a move before he was left behind. She quickly peeked to capture the shocked look and smiled. "Welcome to Sanjeevani Dr. Armaan!", she muttered.
**********************
The area was surrounded with high buildings that seemed to be struggling to reach the sky just like their owners who were in a constant competition with each other and only planned to achieve higher. Some of them might have only thought of finding ways to broaden their businesses all their life.
Kripa walked into one such building, watching her steps carefully. She had never been around this place. Moreover, she was a little shaky today and why wouldn't she…she never got used to these high heels all her life then how could she now. She made a mental note to throw them away the moment she reaches home.
The place inside was more impressive than what it looked from outside. Walls coated with an elegant choice of colours, with wonderful art collection clunging onto them to add in the magnificence. She looked around to find the closest elevator.
She watched as the steel doors closed gently. Oh! How she prayed that someone could just enter before it closed. Kripa always hated being in elevators and that too alone. It gave her those weird nostalgic feelings. She pointed a long, rectangular mirror, on the side wall. Good. Now, she could use some distraction.
*Ting* the elevator ringed as it arrived at the top floor. She quickly straightened her black cotton shirt again and stepped out before the door could close on her face. The place was empty, no sign of any humans. She swore to strangle the manager if she didn't find Khanna's cabin here. She didn't travel all the way up from that scary elevator for nothing!
Atlast, victory! Kripa sighed after finding a decent door which actually said ANGAD KHANNA, after searching through several empty rooms. Kripa knocked once and entered abruptly, without waiting for his approval.
************************
He looked up from his computer screen, hearing the door opening loudly. She stood there with an annoyed look and made a move towards his desk. He smirked as he observed her behaviour keenly. He loved to watch her irritated. Kripa Kapoor was still the same even after two years.
She grabbed one of the chairs and sat with a thump. How wrong was she to even plan on acting professionally with him. Angad Khanna did not deserve it. "Why did you call me here Khanna?", she asked with no interest. He grinned and threw a newspaper across the table. The paper slid over the furnished wooden tabletop and touched her fingers, stopping at the perfect spot due to friction. She gave him a confused look and picked up the paper.
"Oberoi Empire clashes…truth is finally exposed!", read the headlines on the front page. Kripa was shocked, but gripped some courage and scanned the whole article slowly. She was in rage, shaking with anger. How dare they? Cheats. Liars. Those frauds. She wanted to slap each one of those Oberois. They have sued Angad Khanna's company two years ago for several allegations. It was one of the first cases Kripa fought and even won. Her career as a lawyer had just started then. Kripa looked down guiltily, as her mind flashed with memories of the last hearing in the court.
"Mr. Angad Khanna is a cheat…", the words ringed in her ears as she hid her face behind the newspaper. She could never forgive herself now that she knew who really was responsible. Angad had tried to justify once but she being her stubborn self never listened.
"Kripa, I want you to work for my company!", Angad said taking a last sip from his coffee.
