Madhavan quits Deal Ya No Deal
By: Shaheen Parkar
January 13, 2006

R Madhavan in Deal Ya No Deal
R Madhavan has quit as anchor of the Sony game show, Deal Ya No Deal.

The actor had not been shooting for this Miditech produced show since the New Year. Apparently, he was unhappy with the way the shoot schedules were handled by the production house.

When asked about his sudden exit, Madhavan says, "Yes, I am no longer hosting Deal Ya No Deal. I have stopped shooting from the beginning of this month."

Number of days

According to the actor, when he took on the show, he had made it clear that he would continue with his south film assignments.

"I always work on one film at a time. I was told I would be required to shoot for only six days a month, for Deal Ya No Deal. But I ended up shooting for several more days. I was willing to give up 10 days, but things were just not working out."

The ever-changing look of the show meant Madhavan had to constantly rehearse. "They wanted to revamp the show, and I had to spend one entire day doing only doing technical rehearsals," he adds.

Travel time

Accustomed to the southern style of functioning, where everything is timed to clockwork precision and the vagaries of television shoots was not something the actor had bargained for.

"I was willing to provide up to 10 days, but, that too was not sufficient," he adds. Moreover, as Madhavan is Chennai-based, the constant travelling took up a lot of time.

Fantastic experience

Viewers will continue to see Madhavan in the next couple of episodes of Deal Ya No Deal, as these have been shot earlier. On the Hind film front, he features in the Aamir Khan starrer, Rang De Basanti.

Looking back at his stint as anchor, he says the experience was fantastic. "I enjoyed interacting with the participants," says Madhavan, who was asked by Sony to turn anchor on the game show. "I had appeared in one episode of Fame Gurukul; they liked me in it and offered me Deal Ya No Deal."

There were also some testing times, like when he shot for the show immediately after the funeral of his grandfather.

As reported in "Madhavan's crisis shoot" (hitList, December 17), the actor had to report to shoot immediately after his grandfather's funeral, as a celebrity year-end special episode with several telly stars was being canned.

Desi version

Deal Ya No Deal, which went on air in November, is the desi version of the internationally known game show, Deal or No Deal. The reality show tests an individual's ability in making the right choices.

The contestant faces 22 cash boxes, containing cheques varying from a small amount to Rs 10 million.

Without knowing the amount, the contestant picks one box. The show is shot at a studio in MIDC, Andheri (E), and has episodic and celebrity guests, besides the aam janta, as participants.

Mandira to replace Madhavan

It is learnt that Sony favourite Mandira Bedi will replace Madhavan as the new host of Deal Ya No Deal.

Bedi, who anchored Fame Gurukul for the channel, also hosts Dial One Aur Jeeto for SaharaOne.

She has already begun rehearsing for the show.

When even losers win

Reality show and talent hunt losers may not win the top prizes, but they still reap handsome rewards

SOMASHUKLA SINHA WALUNJKAR

Zee Challenge 2005 contestant Himani is busy doing "live shows" and has done playback for Kalpana Lajmi's Chingari. Struggling actor Raju Shrivastava may have lost out in the finals of Star One's The Great Indian Laughter Challenge, but he got to anchor the Screen Awards and landed small roles in big films.
"One good platform is all that you need to get noticed. If I am playing major roles in Balaji soaps, it's because of Indian Idol," says former contestant Amit Tandon who plays the second lead in Sony's primetime soap, Kaisa Ye Pyar Hai and will soon "play an important role in Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi." Zee Cinestar Khoj 2005 finalist Yuvika Choudhury admits that doing a "major role in Astitva (Zee's daily soap) was a huge plus. Today I have film offers. For a Varanasi girl like me, being on a talent hunt show has been good."
Others agree. "Once we are seen on television, it is the first step to realising our dreams" says Rex D'Souza, who lost out the in the Fame Gurukul final round. Actors Manish and Poonam Goyal, the runners up couple in the dance show, Naach Baliye (Star One) today not only have lots of television soap offers, but even get invited for ribbon-cutting duties.
For small screen's fickle viewers instant celebrities have a limited recall. So anyone who gets close to the coveted platform makes sure that they grab the most of that one opportunity, which enables them to hold acting and music workshops, do playbacks, cameos in films and TV, make ribbon-cutting appearances at various shows. Life is a constant whirl even for losers.

Thank God for the great Indian reality show and the innumerable talent hunts aired on television. Winners might take home the big prize money, but do people remember them after that nail-biting finale? KBC's first millionaire Harshvardhan Nawathe was all set to take his IAS examinations, but after winning Rs 1 crore on KBC, success went so much to his head that he had a nervous breakdown and paid his way through an MBA course in the UK. No one even remembers the faceless Delhi engineer who won Rs 50 lakh in Zee's 2000 show, Jeeto Chappar Phad Ke. A fortnight after Ravindra Vats won Rs 1.56 crore on Kam Ya Zyada, he is just another TV millionaire who has lived his fifteen minutes of fame on air, while the channel hunts for more winners.

And for all those tear-smudged, shocked faces of finalists edged out in the last round, there is hope yet. On primetime television, even reality show/talent hunt losers get their share of limelight. Jalandhar's house painter Ravinder Ravi may have been edged out of the Indian Idol final rounds, but a year down the line he has released his debut album Jatt Luteya Gaya with an exotic music video shot in Barcelona. Indian Idol first runners up Amit Sana, who drives a Hyundai Accent, is working on his second album (his debut album, Safar released weeks after Indian Idol finalist Abhijeet Sawant debut album!), while Indian Idol contestants Rahul Vaidya and Prajakta Shukre have done their share of playback singing and appear on Sony shows.
