Reality singing

Abhilasha Ojha / New Delhi October 29, 2005

A simple girl from Kolkata and a wannabe from Srinagar are now hailed as the nation's first Fame Jodi

When Qazi Tauqeer became Indian reality television's latest pin-up boy, he gave the entire Kashmir valley reason to smile.

From Mughal Gardens, where he used to bully his friend into clicking his posed photographs while mouthing Hindi film dialogues, his journey to Mumbai via Sony TV's Fame Gurukul show has been a long one.

Meanwhile, in Kolkata, Rooprekha's family has extended the Durga Puja celebrations especially as their darling daughter makes her debut in the Indian entertainment industry.

Busy with recording and makeover sessions, both Qazi and Rooprekha — Sony television's first 'Fame Jodi' — are getting used to their lives complete with Alto cars, Rs 50 lakh each in their kitty and of course, a lot of media attention where they occasionally tend to goof up.

Take their first interview on a news channel, for instance, where Rooprekha blurted out that she and Rex (Fame Gurukul's first runner-up) weren't too comfortable with each other in the last few weeks of the show.

The news channel later presented an edited version of the interview and deleted the controversial bits from the show. A former contestant on condition of anonymity confirms, "Yes, there was a problem between the two of them, especially after returning from Kolkata."

Another contestant is a little sceptical about whether the Rooprekha-Qazi jodi will even last that long. Love them, hate them, it's just impossible to ignore the brand new idols of Indian reality TV.

And for quite some time, it seems both Qazi and Rooprekha will be the topic of conversation all over the country, especially in the muhhalas of Srinagar and the dusty bylanes of Kolkata.

In Srinagar, Qazi's home is almost like a tourist spot, what with hordes of people just waiting outside his house, staring at the main door, sitting there and narrating tales of how their latest hero was once their best friend or that innocent boy who loved dancing but wept every time he heard bombs and guns scar the face of his home-town.

Children in Srinagar see him as their hero today, while the elders of his own extended family and the rest of Srinagar can't stop raving about their new idol.

"I always wanted to be famous and rich," says Qazi Tauqeer as we manage to tear him away from Tunes Studio in Mumbai where he's recording duets and solos with Rooprekha for their first album, Ye Pal.

Coming from a fairly academic family — his mother is a teacher, his father a lawyer-turned-Sufi — Qazi remembers "being obsessed with his looks at a very young age".

With a huge mirror that was placed in his bedroom where he posed merrily, the innumerable dents in the wooden flooring bear evidence of his non-stop dance performances when he remained confined for innumerable hours.

"My parents have been encouraging but I guess it was hard for them to have a son who was so obsessed with the typical filmi song-and-dance act," he laughs. So why did he miss out on previous reality shows like Indian Idol? "Oh, I thought I was meant to be a superstar! I didn't think I needed a reality show to prove myself."

He admits he was wrong — the praises showered on Abhijeet Sawant (the current Indian Idol) shook him from his siesta. "He got all that adulation from a reality show. I thought if he could get it all, I was far more capable," Qazi grins. He's right.

Shunned by judges, faculty and fellow contestants on the show for paying attention to his acting antics rather than singing, he has cornered nearly 2 crore votes all by himself in the show. "In one of the episodes, of the total of 66 lakh votes, I received 44 lakh votes," he says with pride.

While Qazi's unshakeable confidence in himself gave him the courage to fetch the 'Fame Jodi' title, for Rooprekha the programme had started taking its toll, especially in its last phase.

While her parents are still busy distributing pastries and cakes from their shop where they run a catering business, there was a time when her physician flew down from Kolkata when she was unable to bear the pressures of the competition.

"It was killing," says this Ist year BSc student — incidentally, Qazi too is a Ist year BSc student — who feels her studies will have to take a back seat at least for a year.

The lives of these new stars have certainly changed for the better. Rex, for instance, has bid adieu to the call centre where he once worked. "I've just finished a live show with Abhijeet Sawant," he says while he signs autographs for his newfound fans.

"I have," he says, screaming to make himself heard as fans screech in the background, "shows with other Indian Idol contestants too." Sony BMG is now taking care of his live shows and according to him have nearly "six months of shows lined up right now".

Moreover, he says "the music company has promised to look after my career for the next two years." Meanwhile, Rooprekha is fine-tuning Qazi's vocal skills with her classical singing training, while he's "busy advising her to lose more weight".

Qazi's mother is happily house-hunting as her 20-year-old son gets ready to invest his cheque of Rs 50 lakh.

Clearly, these new stars of Indian television have begun to get used to a life in the fast lane. Remember, these are just the first baby steps they've taken to reach the main gate of the Indian entertainment industry.

OK. Here is the translated interview of Ruprekha. This is my first attempt to do such a translation. For those who can read Bengali, check out the original in today's Ananda Baazar Patrika's supplement page. The format is in the form of Q(Question) and R(Reply). Here it goes:

Q: Who gave the name Ruprekha?
R: My bade dadu gave this name.

Q: After winning the title, which celebrity's wishes impressed you the most?
R: Sonu Nigam and Udit Narayan. I met Uditji in a Star TV program. He speaks very well.

Q: Anyone in your family into music?
R: Yup. One of my grand uncle sings Kali Kirtan, another plays the flute. One of my aunts sings Rabindrasangeet very
well. In fact my chote dadu understands music very well. It was he who suggested that I should get training in music.

Q: How did you prepare for Fame Gurukul?
R: Used to learn music. Also took part in different music competitions. For example in the local Agarpara festival.
They awarded me the best musical talent in 2004.I also reached the final stages of Sananda Adwitiya competition.
I was preparing keeping the SaReGaMa competition in mind. The opportunity however came from Sony. I am grateful to them.

Q: Was being able to sing without looking at the words one of the criteria for your Fame Gurukul's success?
R: (laughs)Maybe it worked. Actually I used to learn classical music from Sangita Das, Bharati KarChoudhury, and
later from Arun Bhaduri. Along with this I used take voice training from Kalyan Ghosh. I can pick up any song after hearing it twice. In this way I started picking up Rabindrasangeet, Nazrulgeeti, modern Bengali songs and later Hindi songs.

Q: How did you come to know about the need for these types of training?
R: If you have the will, you will be able to know. A lot of people question this since I am not from proper Kolkata.
My father runs a sweet shop and a small decorator business, my mother is a simple housewife - then how did Ruprekha learn all these. Actually the determination to become a singer taught me all these. My parents helped me a lot. They fulfilled all my whims and wishes.

Q: Where did you do your education from?
R: Initial schooling from Agarpara Vivekananda Vidyamandir, later passed my Madhyamik (tenth class) from Barrackpore
Ramkrishna Mission with first division star and letter marks in four subjects (Mathematics, Geography, Life Science and Physical Science). Later, I passed my Higher Secondary (twelfth class) from Ariadaha Sarbamangala Valika Vidyalaya with High First Divison marks in the Science stream. After that I was doing my graduation in Zoology Honours from Vidyasagar College in Kolkata. I was in second year. I don't think I will be able to continue my studies there anymore.

Q: Did music training affect your academics?
R: In that sense, it has affected my academics. But, for music I can do anything. Lets see, whether I can continue
with my studies. I wish to complete my studies in Mumbai.

Q: For how long is your love affair with music?
R: Its been for life. Do you know when I was in the fourth standard, I used to write on my pencil box - 'Ruprekha
Banerjee (Playback Singer)'. People watch movie stars - I used to watch Lataji, Ashaji on the TV screen.

Q: Is that dream of yours fulfilled?
R: This is just the first phase - the begining.

Q: How was the feeling when you were in the Danger Zone of Gurukul?
R: I used to understand my mistakes. I was in the danger zone four times. Once I could clearly understand my mistake
when I sang the song 'Kanta Laaga'. During these times, I got a lot of help from Ila madam, Prasant sir and Padma madam.

Q: Every time you were asked with whom you wanted to be Fame Jodi, you came up with different replies. Now tell us
exactly with whom did you think you wanted to become Fame Jodi for the first time?
R: Not only me, there were many of us who thought that I would be Fame Jodi with Arijit....maybe God did not want it
that way...actually Qazi also improved so much that it was not possible to stop him.

Q: How do you feel about your voluntary imprisonment over the last few months?
R: Why imprisonment. It was a sort of discipline.

Q: We heard that they also seized your mobile. You had to take permission from them to talk even with your parents.
Isn't that a type of imprisonment?
R: (laughs) Actually during this period we had to forsake many of our favourite things. We used to only focus on the
things related to the program. The amusing thing is that we were not even allowed to watch the TV. In order to achieve something, one needs to make some sacrifices - that was the I used to placate myself. However, the whole thing was not just an exercise of rigid discipline. I think it was an opportunity to open up oneself.

Q: What was your feeling just after winning the Fame Jodi?
R: I could feel some sort of emptiness. I was aware that tears were continuously flowing from my eyes.

Q: Being for so long in Gurukul, haven't you fallen in love with anyone there?
R: Rubbish! They were classmates. Mere friends only.

Q: If you were asked to choose anyone as your husband then?
R: I will chose none from them.

Q: What about Rex and you...?
R: This was just fun. Sort of created, you can say. Qazi is also a very good friend of mine. You can call the whole
issue as being created to relieve the pressure situation. They used to call me Rupu, Nachchari, Frooty, Koyel...I used to also call Qazi as Item.

Q: Your appearance and dress - everything has changed. Don't you feel uncomfortable? Do you have any plans to take
up acting?
R: Initially I was uncomfortable. Actually, for all India stage performance, it is needed. I have accepted it.
Acting - haven't decided yet. Will think if I get a good role.

Q: You favourite two singers Lataji and Ashaji however did not have to dress in this way?
R: (after a long silence) Maybe times have changed...

Q: So you are saying that in order to be a playback singer, one has to learn dancing along with singing?
R: Aaare. No. No. This grooming occurs somewhat on its own.

Q; Who are your role models in Mumbai?
R: Sonu Nigam and Shreya Ghosal.

Q: Anything you miss within this huge popularity?
R: My parents, didi, close friends. I also miss the familiar roads of Agarpara and many more things...

Q: How would rate the songs that you have had sung till date?
R: As performer 80, as singer just about pass - maybe 60 on a higher side.
