Chapter 26
The anger was beyond what one could control, he was too much of man to lash out at his wife or at the Englishman who he banished from his palace on encounter with his queen and hunting it was. Whatever the king would kill would be in the spirit of killing the man who had touched his wife but even then the Amerkot's conscious kicked in. He couldn't hurt one on the account of another.
When Ranaji returned to the palace still visibly irate but much calmer than before no one apart from he and Rani Subharna knew what had gone on. He would not humiliate her that way no would he tolerate others involvement on a matter between him and his queen.
The only thing that seemed to calm ranaji these days was Gayatri so when the King decided to walk past Gayatris quarters it was intentional. He entered without prior warning a way a husband would and found Gayatri applying a soothing cream to the love bites he had given her over the past few nights.
She need not be embarrassed but she was, she covered up as she saw him enter, her eyes apologized for the inappropriate situation. Had she known he was to visit she would have been able to greet him more respectably but his eyes showed ease for Gayatri for one moment his glare of anger melted as he hoped it would upon seeing her.
He walked towards her sat at the bedside, took a seat next to her. Gayatri could sense that there was something different about the king, she found him less approachable maybe she could sense that he wasn't in the finest of moods but his actions were of same affectionate sort. Why did she feel as if he was wordlessly asking to be consoled contrary to his action which made her the centre of attention. He shipped away the saari that Gayatri had quickly adjusted.. took the herbal mixture to his finger tips and applied it to Gayatris skin those areas she hadnt quite managed to get to because he had walked in. He need not do that for but she appreciated the care even amongst her hesitation on the matter.
He had just about finished when Swarnlekha made herself known at the entrance of the room. Gayatri seemed to react more than the king who was calm he simply covered up Gayatri's shoulder ..cleaned his hands and once Gayatri was happy invited Swarna into the room who was visiting her friend with the excuse of bringing water to her room.
There was an exchange of nodds, before the king left and soon as he did the conversation between the two friends was as norm.
This evening was strange, there was going to be no family meal this evening on the Kings orders food was to be delivered to individual quarters and from gayatri had seen of him she could see that something wasn't quite right but sometimes all people needed was space and Gayatri understood that.
"Swarna hame Rani subharna ke bare mein aur batayey na ." (Swarna tell me more about Rani Subharna ) Gayatri said as she saw Swarna put down water at her side table.
Gayatri seemed to have this obsession with knowing about Subharna today, Swarna just shook her head.
"Aur kya batayay ham unke bare mein gayatri.." (What more could I possibly tell you Gayatri. ) she said almost unsure why Gayatri was so intrigued to know about the kings first wife but Gayatri was adamant.
"Unke aur Ranaji ke bare mein.." (About her and the King.)
She said very seriously and she wasn't going to give up however she did see Swarna's expression change to uncertaintly. The truth was Swarna knew what she had heard from others but she had also spent a few years more in this mehel than gayatri and saw some things with certainty too.
... Elsewhere in the Rajmehel
The room was in sheer silence when Rani Subharna entered but it was the silence that was the scariest, the most unpredictable, the most daunting the most horrifying of atmospheres it built around one. She had no idea how he would react, she had no idea how she would react, all she knew is that with a heavy heart and an apology did she turn up at his door hoping that the tide would calm.
The sound of the queens jewellery Is all that could be heard in the room as she entered.
She looked upon the kings back turned to her and was greatful for she knew not how she could possibly look him in the eyes at this time.
The silence was one of great intensity. Ranaji may have his back to his queen but he recognized every step she took into room, every slight move she made even with his back to her.
"Ek vakt tha jab aap ne ham par khat likha tha"----"You sent me a letter all those years back requesting that I excuse the need for you to learn English because you did not enjoy the language, you didn't think Rajmata would understand so you wrote to me on the matter."
Subharna didn't think Ranaji recalled her letters even all these years she simply listened to what he was getting at with the same emotion, fear, distress instilled within her.
"It was him all along wasn't it ..the English teacher, Kya aapa use -- "
Before Ranaji could complete the sentence Subharna interrupted.
Aisa keh kar hamare rishte ko gaali na de..maharaj khuda janta hai ke hamare liyey aap ke alava koi dusra kabhi tha na hoga, (Don't insult our relationship by saying that your highness, God knows that I belong to only one man and that is you.)
He didn't respond, nor could she tell what he was thinking but Rani Subharna had kept this dark closet of hers closed for too long, confessing was painful but would bring her peace she had longed for. She swallowed a lump in her throat and tried to keep her eyes free of tears for those would only make this even more difficult.
She paused for a moment for this was something she had never shared with him.
"Ham na samaj they, takleef mein they salon aap ka intaazar kiya hamne yey jane bina ke aap lautenge bhi ya nahin aur yey dard ne hame paap karne par majboor kar diya. Hamara paap yahi tha ke hamne apne pati ko chor kar kisi aur ka khyal kiya sirf khyal magar us din se le kar aaj tak hamne apne aap ko is baat ke liyey kausa hai maharaj aur kaus te rahenge."
("I was young and naieve back then and somewhat hurt waiting for you all those years, not knowing if you would return, bought me to sin ..my sin was that I considered a man other than my husband and nothing more but I curse my self every day for that one thought I had all those years ago. Just a thought nothing more.")
Silence had fallen yet again in the room..Rani shubarna wiped her stray tears, and summoned a maid with a royal clap of the hands brining into the room a maid who bought a platter towards to the king. Materal covering the plate the lady leaves the tray beside Ranaji and leaves.
Waiting for the maid to completely leave the room before she speaks still talking to the back of the kings posture Subharna speaks in a tone composed despite the nature of the conversation.
"Ham aap ke gunegaar hai Maharaj aap joh sazza de woh kam par jayey.."
I am your culprit your highness whatever way you choose to punish me will be insufficient.
Ranaji uncovers the platter see that the tray holds a whip. Overturning It with a incredible force for it to come crashing to the floor. Indravarden turns to Subharna. Her uspet, her fear, her inability to look at him and he didn't blame her. He was angry his mind was foul but that didn't change the the man within. Even in a rage he spoke like a man of substance.
"If you believe having feelings for more than one person is wrong than the only sinner in this room is me Subharna."
A man may have many wifes but a lady not feel beyond the one what irony and yet his ego his sense of possessiveness for his wife made his blood boil. He passed her in a stride summoning his men yet he promised her that she need not worry for he would be sure to keep the Englishman alive.
...Back in Gayatri's quarters
Leaving Subharna on her own for years.
Returning home with another queen without her knowelege.
Choosing to love Sulkashama whilst his former queen becomes a mere orniment in the palace. Neglect is the only thing that came through In Swarnlekhas words about Ranaji and Rani subharnas relationship. Gayatri felt her heart sink at Swarnas words the same woman which was so perfect, so beautiful so devoted yet so unfortunate?
"Aap udas kyun ho rahin ho gayatri Aap ka toh rishta ranaji ke saath pyaar bhara hai na .. hamari mano toh is sab ke bare mein mat socho gayatri nahin is baat ka kabhi sikar karna". (Why are you upset Gayatri, your relationship with the king is filled with affection isn't it, you need not think about all that, nor ever mention it. )
Was it really that easy though because up until now Gayatri had seen the prefect king in her husband, the perfect gentleman and respected him for his qualities but her mind and heart quickly began to stagger in the opposite direction after hearing of what he had put Rani Subharna through.

Rajmata is sat in the presence of Ranaji when he summons Gayatri to the room but sevak returns with an unexpected response.
A little afraid of the kings reaction the sevak speaks cautiously.
