Chapter 23

Ranaji sifts through a whole host of Gayatri's childhood pictures over a cup of coffee in his room. Each old black and white picture puts a slightly different smile on his face each time. If he was to know about his bride then he would know everything there was to know.

Soon enough there was a knock at the door of the room and when Ranaji took a glance towards the entrance stood looking for permission to enter was Yashodra with an elderly looking gentleman a sevak from Govind Seths home if Ranajis memory served him correctly.

Child marriage, loss of spouse, oppression through a ridiculing cultural code, sexist values and attempted forced marriage to a man three times older than herself were only some of the things that Ranaji heard about in relation to Gayatris life.

There was some positive things, her determination, her imagination, her willingness to continue to strive for her dreams but everything in her life seemed to be tainted by unhappiness. Almost everything.

Yashodra watched the king pace around the room in thought it was obvious that these facts about his queen had disturbed him. It wasn't that he didn't know of Gayatris unfortunate past he did just not to this extent.

"Agar hukhum ki agyay ho toh ham kuch kahe.?"

(If the King deems fit may I speak on the matter?)

Yashodras as ever was perfect in her words before the king. Ranaji looked towards Yashodra for a moment and then gave a nodd of the head for he trusted her to always contribute useful opinions.

"Rani Gayatri ka atit hamri samaj mein har kisi aurat ki satchayi hai Maharaj.

Is pursh pradhan samaj mein aurate kahin na kahin apne aap ko akela aur apriya mehsoos karti hai yehi hamari satchayi hai aur Rani Gayatri shayad is baat ki sab se badi missal hai."

("Rani Gayatris past is typical of what a woman in our male dominated society often goes through. Finding yourself lonely and unloved is a common sate of mind for many women and Rani Gayatri is probably one of the greatest examples of that reality.")

Yashodras words certainly opened Ranajis eyes to a major cause he had overlooked with all that had been going on in the Royal family recently. If he was to act on the matter then he would have to start with his own bride before trying to address what Yashodra had pointed out.

When Ranaji walked the corridors on the upper floor the mehel that night the arrival of Gayatri and Swarlekha he witnessed.

Gayatri looked breathtaking he thought looking from the balcony down at the ladies who had returned from the jashn Gayatri didn't want to go to.

Swarna and Gayatri looked like they had a great time but Gayatri in particular was what caught Ranajis attention. After all he had spent the majority of his day if not all of it thinking about her. Care free, innocent not to mention beautiful. Stopping a servant Ranaji places an instruction before retreating to his room.

A couple of seconds later Gayatri gets an unexpected message from a servant just as the two women get into the hallway of the Rajmehel.

"Rani sahiba Rana sahib ne aap ko unke kaksh mein bulaya hai."

(The king has asked for you in his quarters Raniji.)

The very prompt instruction on her arrival surprised Gayatri but she agreed watching the sevak walk away after which she felt a nudge from Swarna by her side.

A call from the king at this time of the night was something that could easily be used to tease Gayari. Swarna gave her a mischievous look to which Gayatri only ignored disproving of Swarnlekhas thoughts.

When Gayatri entered Ranaji's room she may have forgotten to knock for permission to enter but then she wouldn't have caught the King in such a unique moment. He looked a sight sat back in his chair with a novel it was the most relaxed Gayatri had ever seen him. She could stand there and watch him for hours she thought, he looked incredibly handsome, charm was something that came naturally to him but not trying not to drift off into a day dream of her own Gayatri sees empty pieces porcelain no doubt from a coffee much earlier on In the day and walks closer towards the King in an attempt to fetch it.

Hearing the soft clinging of someone moving the cup and plates from the table before him Ranaji looks up to see Gayatri perched on the floor next to the coffee table clearing up. He didn't realize someone else was also in the room.

"Swarna kafi khush lag rahin hai.." (Swarna looks a little happier ) he said lowering his book.

Ji phele se bohot betar mehsoos kar rahin hai par vakt lage ga (I think she feels better than before but it will take time. )

There was a moment of understanding between them both but Gayatri was taken by surprise on Ranajis next remark.

Aur aap..? ("And you?")

When Gayatri looked at Ranaji by chance she saw something very different in his eyes for her something meaningful. Nobody ever asked her how she was and really meant it she wasn't used to that. She smiled non the less.

Ham theek hai. (I'm fine)

As Gayatri picked up thw stray cup and saucer, the extra plate and stood up to clear them from the room Ranaji wanted it known that the conversation wasn't over yet.

Rukhiyey gayatri .. (wait)

She stopped and could hear him put down his book on the table get up from the chair and walk around her. Now standing in front of her Gayatri could feel his eyes over her. She didn't think of looking up at him.

Avoiding the eyes of someone of authority was done as a mark of respect it was something she had seen over and over again in her life and after marriage to Ranaji it was just a mannerism. There was no authority higher than Ranaji in the mehel and in Amerkot and so like others did Gayatri too found it difficult to look at him. When he he took the china out of her hands and put it back down on the table Gayatri couldn't help but react. She did look up at him and without realizing she gave her husband a seamless view into those hazel eyes of hers.

It was unhappiness in Gayatris eyes maybe a lot less than when he first lay eyes on her but it was still there. Behind her smile, behind her innocence behind her determination for life there was still sorrow she did well to hide but not today, not from him. Ranaji had now crossed the line of which Gayatri was a mere a acquaintance because now it was as if he knew her.

"Ham aap ko is mehel mein yey sab kar ne ke liyey nahin layey hai.."

and he knew if he let her speak she would say it was her kartavya towards him her husband but he continued in a way there was no time for objection.

"Ham aap ko is liyey layey they ke ham aap ko apna vajood.. apni khasiyat samja sake Gayatri."

(I bought you into this mehel so I could prove your worth to the world and to you.)

The care and concern In Ranajis eyes for Gayari overwhelmed her so much so that that tears formed.

Seeing great sadness in gayatris eyes maybe well disguised but he could see it and his heart couldn't bare to see her that way maybe after what he knew of her Ranajis feelings for Gayatri had amounted to something much more than just common curiosity now.

He stepped that little closer to her, the sound of his shoes against the floor was a sound that gave Gayatri a sensation one could not define. Normally her first instinct would have been to back away but for that one moment she didn't mind.

She stood still trying to keep as strong as she could because she knew her husband could not tolerate those who were easily shaken.

But he looked at her with warm eyes..held the side of her face and gently wiped away a stray tear that Gayatri probably didn't even realize had escaped her eyes.

Her eyes were remarkably beautiful there was no space for tears in them he thought. He stretched effortlessly to and placed a kiss to Gayatris forehead, when he looked down at her he saw her still her eyes closed, just calm on her face.

She didn't deserve to be unhappy, or feel outcast she was a beautiful lady and what Ranaji admired the most in her was her sincerity.

If he could do anything to make her feel valued, cared for and worthy of love like any other woman he would do it and in this moment this felt natural.

His lips soon found Gayatris and one thing was sure to lead to the other.

Whether it was Gayatri's grasp at Ranaji's shirt as he took her into his arms, the kings lips caressing gayatri's neck line whilst she felt the silk of the royal bedsheets under her or the whisper of reassurance at her ear in his tone of voice.

The feeling was neutral between both man and wife, Ranaji wanted to demonstrate worth and affection to his wife whilst Gayatri wanted to relished in his ways. All the rights of being a wife is all she ever longed for and not just out of obligation but out of care, out of love and to Gayatri it was the first time she felt loved.'

She was new to this and he was gentle in response , affectionate and careful despite his own experience and liking. His lips caressed her, his words were loving and reassuring and his ways seductive yet regal. His young wife was indeed one of gods finest creations is what Indraverden learned as he unraveled her and Gayatri learnt that her King was a passionate yet gentle soul beyond his exterior.

The night passed with fulfillment of many a desire but most important was that Gayatri was the centre of Ranaji's love.

When Gayatri opened her eyes very early next morning, amongst the sheets of Ranajis bed the reality of last night soon took shape. It was no dream last night was as real as the air Gayatri took in this morning. Her bare figure wrapped up in royal silk of the Kings bed Gayatri looks to her side to see Indravarden's side of the bed vacant. The sent of strong coffee lingered in the air which meant Ranaji was already awake. The humidity of the sun and its rays hitting the room told Gayatri that it was too early for anyone to be awake yet and she was right the rest of the Rajmehel was still asleep and would be for a few more hours. Gayatri wraps herself up a little more as there a knock to the doors of the room.

It was only a sevka who speaks of a message from the king and so Gayatri lets her in . a little conscious of her current state but the maid refrains from looking at her whilst she passes on the message from the king.

Ranaji ghor savari par gayey hue hai unka adesh hai ke aap aaram kare woh kuch hein vakt mein lot ayeyge.

A spontaneous visit to the woods this early in the morning Gayatri thought but this morning for her was to get to grips with last nights reality rather than speculate so she confirmed her understanding of Ranaji's message for her and smiled to herself once the sevka had left.

Else where Ranaji walked lesser known parts of the woods of Amerkot. A little behind him walked Ramsingh.

Ramsingh was well aware of one thing Ranaji only ever visited these woods and walked on foot as a means of entertaining his thoughts. He'd been thinking about gayatri about last night and there was one thing ranaji had realized that was that he had moved on in life now. Maybe even began to love again!

"Hukum aaj kush lag rahe .." (The king looks unusually happy today) Ramsingh said from a distance behind the king. The matter of fact was that Ranaji was happy.

Indravadren looked at Ramsingh with content eyes Wapas chale Ramsingh..

Hamari rani hamara instaaar kar rahin hai.! (Lets head back ramsingh my queen awaits me )

Gayatri's expression was telling of her night with the king. Swarna took every opportunity to tease Gayatri but she was also there to notice that Gayatri was extra observant of Rani Subharna this morning.

Speaking of how she admired Rani Subharna and how perfect she was Swarna was quick to correct Gayatri because things in Subharna's life with Ranaji were far from perfect.
