Dadi Ma- if she is still active in Balika Vadhu...the impression I got was, she could be a special appearance from time to time. If she is the one who grooms Gayatri, it'd be delightful to watch. If the royal couple were to pay the old woman a visit...in the woods...interesting possibilities.😉

I wonder if she will ever reside in the palace as such...she seems quite happy where she is.

MUMBAI: We have all heard the story of kings and queens in our childhood, and often wanted to live that fairytale dream. Known for its traditional stories, Zee TV attempted to bring alive that dream when it decided to make a period drama set in the pre-Independence era of the 1940s when royalty and the struggle for sovereignty existed side by side.

However, it took a lot of time and much more out of Zee TV once Nilanjana Purkayastha explained the concept. The broadcaster then roped in Sphere Origins to handle the production for Ek Tha Raja, Ek Thi Rani'.

Sphere Origins' Comall Wadhwa says, "When Zee approached us, we definitely jumped up. We made a pilot episode of the show in the Baroda Palace. So we thought of shooting the show there, but destiny brought us back to Rajasthan, which provided the setting for most of our earlier shows."

The show has an ensemble cast that includes Dhrashti Dhami, who makes a comeback on television as the female lead Gayatri. Siddhant Karnick will play the male lead, Ranaji Indravadan Singh Deo, the intense and brooding prince of the royal family of Amerkot. Joining the duo is Bollywood actor Anita Raj. Television's favourite Dadi Sa, veteran actor Surekha Sikri and Darshan Zariwala will also play pivotal roles. The show also stars Moon Bannerjee and Akshay Anand.

"It took the team a year of research to get the look and feel right to lend authenticity to the concept," Wadhwa adds. For the female characters, the team had to make sure the hairstyles, accessories, jewellery, the eyeliner and lipstick colours conformed to the spirit of that era. "We had to take special care that the ladies do not have a French manicure as the nails in earlier times were filed in a particular manner and the royalty would apply dark nail colour," Wadhwa explains with a smile.

Initially, while the set was being constructed, the production house shot the first 15-20 episodes in various locales across Rajasthan. The team also shot quite a few episodes in the Laxmi Niwas Palace in Bikaner. Wadhwa informs that it took six months just to design the set. The set needed to resemble a palace and was inspired by the Laxmi Vilas Palace in Baroda. Chandravadan More, the National Award-winning art director of Taj Mahal: An Eternal Love Story', was roped in to help them with the designing. A lavish set stands ready at Naigaon, on the outskirts of Mumbai. The set occupies a staggering 30,000 sq feet of area with interior space of 19,000 sq ft and exterior area of 10,000 sq ft comprising fountains, statues, a garden and the main faade. It took 300 workers to build the set.

Sunjoy Wadhwa states, "I always wanted to do a show set in the 1940s but somehow the opportunity never came. Now when I got the chance, I was excited, and the way the story came out and characterisation happened, it all fell in place. To date, it is one of the most expensive sets we have erected at Sphere Origins." Every small detail was taken care of, including costumes as the female lead wears cotton saris of that era. Antique cars and horse carriages were used to remind the audience of the 1940s. Other such elements include Belgian chandeliers, uniforms, the zamindar's house and more. The constructed palace is currently the only waterproof set for a TV show. Carpets weighing over 2.5 tonnes, chandeliers, antiques, vintage cars have been sourced, and carved wooden furniture is being crafted to replicate the designs prevalent during those times. Jewellery and clothing befitting royalty have been sourced from traditional artisans of UP, Delhi and Rajasthan.

The cast members are being trained in horse riding, polo and the finer nuances of diction, body language and mannerisms of the people from that era. The interior of the set takes its inspiration from classic French dcor. The team travelled to different parts of the country to source carpets, chandeliers, fabrics, furnishings and more to recreate the royal look.

Wadhwa says, "Since we were creating a different era, each and every detail needed to be looked into. We found some books that helped us recreate the look of that era. Sunjoy and I visited a number of palaces to check out their interiors. We also met royalty. Some of the palaces in India were designed by architects from abroad, hence the French influence." A lavish set such as this has its own set of challenges and the team encountered some when they needed to put it up in a short span of time. The designs were all ready, but scouting for an appropriate location to put up such a huge lavish set took a lot of time. The shooting is currently in progress in Mumbai and it is a bit hectic. "Even when we need to shift and shoot in another area of the set, it takes time to light it up and shift the props."

Interestingly, the show has two directors. Bhushan Patel shot on location in Rajasthan. Now in Mumbai, the direction has been taken over by and Santram Varma. Besides, a team of 4-5 writers are constantly working on the script. "It is a one-and-a-half-year story on paper and further course will be decided based on audience response. It is more than just a love story set in the Independence-era India; we will also dramatise the Quit India movement and other important events of the era in the course of the show," reveals Sunjoy Wadhwa.

Saw the episode..So Ranaji is angry that he is being forced to marry someone he doesnt love.. He choses to express and release his pain through sarcasm.. OK I get it but I am already telling the CVs I am not interested in supporting another show where the girl is the punching bag.. I dont mind him blaming Rajmata or taunting her.. As she is responsible for his situation.. But I hope he uses his brains and explains to Gayatri he doesnt anything to due with her instead of treating her like crap.. I seem to be losing interest here as well.. If the show was gripping I would have made time for it on Friday itself.. But I am trying to hang on

I have to talk about the scene regarding Ranaji's Chachaji and Govind Seth.. Democracy vs Monarchy seems to be another essential theme along with the fairytale love story.. The irony is very well depicted.. A manglik is to become a Queen.. A commoner once treated like dirt his now standing shoulder to shoulder with the King's uncle.. Lots of interesting subplots

How can he think any girl that marries him can be a gold digger? Ranaji is an educated man.. He should know that women of the time didn't have much say in who they got married too.. I mean we almost witnessed Gayatri getting manipulated into marrying an oldie.. I guess they need to make him dislike her some how for trps ratings.. Hmm..

Lovely post Sush and Great collages Di!!!

Hi Red...
Ranaji is used to women in royalty...the princesses...who had quite a free will, and assertive nature. The other one sharmila...could have fit the bill of someone RNJ is imagining...Gyatri is different...but there is no way for him to know that already...Becoming a queen is a big deal...he is not wrong in assuming that a girl would kill to be in that position...specially one whose dad is in a powerful position to bring the royal family to their knees...figuratively speaking...

Right now the one who is being goaded into doing something against his wishes (exploited) is RNJ not Gayatri...Red...That's what makes this story interesting for me...

Hello Sush and all; 😃
Beautiful collages Shweta

I am too late but you know my weekend and IF story😛

DD was fab with her anticipation of being ranaji's wife. It was her biggest dream come true and she played it best without any words. Her expression as a dreamy fiancee was bang on.
The epi was drag with the shooter and kuwarji and so was with the unnecessary fan the bride thing. Seriously until today even mother was not able to speak up in front of her bhabhi and now since she is marrying all of a sudden mother regained her voice😕. This part of the story i am never going to get it Sush so you will hear me complaint it to the end😆

But what was most surprising was Ranaji and rajmata with their same ring? Is Rajmahal in that bad state that they can not afford another ring? Does Rajmata not know his son's state of mind and his love for his first wife? Then why would they use the same ring? Even though its khandaani ring that did not set with me. Imagine a guy who is going to tye his whole life with another person is dreaming about his good times with his first wife😲 😲 His remembering his vows is fine but does that had to be a love scene?😕 😕

He thinks she is a gold digger; so what does it make him? Does it not make him the similar kind? To him Its a business so why is he not fair in business?
I know this is the basis of the hate wedding but does this justify it? He is a ranaji so he has to be fair with his janta does it mean that Gayatri is not his janta anymore since she is marrying him?

I despised that whole scene of ring and his flash back. I am not saying he will accept her with whole heart. That will take time and that is what the story should be. Not like this🥱

Moreso with this shooting and all will that have effect on Gayatri as she is already been labelled as a person with illfate with her first spouse dying😕

Lets see what will come out of the recap as to me its just another way of taking his spite out on Gayatri😕

I am liking this show with so many things that i don't attest😕 😆

Exactly the hatred is not really well justified and its not consistent with his character. The character that never yelled at Gayatri for her clumsiness, always gave her the benefit of the doubt. Never accused her of trying to pursue him. Could observe every expression on the face of his soldiers and detect their pain is now so quick to judge Gayatri. Ranaji very well knows the difference between commoners and royalty. He himself stated it was his job to understand them. Its not explicable. And not to mention the hypocrisy he can't call other people gold digger if he himself marries due to a business deal. I understand he is being manipulated but he still does come across as some what of a hypocrite.
