Chapter 1

Flashback

As the sun rose Kalpana opened her eyes with the hope that something new will happen in her life. She looked at the table clock and read it was 6 am. Her eyes fell on her baba who was sleeping on the couch. A smile appeared on her face when her eyes fell on her 15 years old younger sister Archana who was sleeping peacefully on a single bed. She was scared when she noticed that her aai Kamla wasn't beside her. "Aai already woke up?" Kalpana mumbled and stood up from the ground where she was sleeping scared. "Kalpana, why ae you still sleeping," Kamla said shouting, "Maharani, ab uthiye aur jaiye ghar ka kam sambhal ke liye." After folding the mat which she was using to sleep on the ground she came out of the room hurriedly. Her eyes then fell on the pile of the clothes that Kamla already gathered for Kalpana to wash. Kalpana went to the kitchen to help her Aai prepare breakfast. After that she went to the bathroom to wash those clothes. While she was washing clothes everyone was having their breakfast no one even cared if Kalpana had her breakfast or not. After washing clothes Kalpana came and sat beside her sister Archana. There was only one roti left which Kalpana was about to take but Kamla stopped her saying, "Let Archana have it." Kamla continued, "Kya hai na, how long Archana will get to eat here in this house. But you will be here forever." Hearing her Kalpana felt bad and without uttering a word she stood up from the floor. "You go and prepare for lunch. You can have lunch," Kamla said. "Ji," Saying so Kalpana left the room. This was not something new. She always had to hear it from her parents. She always gets ignorance from her parents because of her dark skin color. But no one would ever care that she had a golden heart. Her beauty lays in her heart. Her parents thought that no one will come to ask for her hand in marriage. Not only this her younger sister would always get more priority than her. Archana would get new clothes but kalpana would get her sisters old and used clothes. But Kalpana never complained about it. She never experienced such parents love in her life. Still she would love her sister and her parents as well. She accepted it as her fate. But she really appreciated that her parents allowed her to continue her study.

After preparing the lunch she went to sweep the floors. After all the household work Kalpana was waiting to eat lunch but she had to wait until her baba came home from work. Vittal was a rikshaw driver. He comes home to eat lunch. After he eats the other members of the house eat. Kalpana looked at the clock and mumbled, "Maybe baba got a passenger that's why he is late." She was getting late for the college that's why she left the house with empty stomach.

On the other side of the city all the businessmen were gathered in a venue waiting for the announcement of the best businessman of the year. After one long hour of waiting finally they announced the name of the person, the most eligible bachelor Raghav Singhania. Hearing his name the whole venue was filled with claps. "He deserves this," People who were present in there started saying. "Congratulations my friend," Sammy said hugging his friend Raghav. "Thank you," Raghav said. "My friend, you got everything. Now when did you plan to marry?" Sammy asked. Hearing him Raghav said annoyed, "Please Sammy, not this topic again." "For how long you are going to avoid this topic?" Sammy asked. Without replying him, Raghav excused himself saying he has to go to the orphanage as he always chose to visit on Friday and told Sammy to handle the people over here.

It was about 6 pm. Raghav was in the car going to the orphanage. On the way to the orphanage his car was waiting in the traffic. He was sitting in the back seat of the car. After waiting 10 more minutes in the traffic he looked outside through the window to see the traffic. He saw a man got off from the car and went to an old man who was selling coconuts on the side walk. While the old man was cutting the coconut to make a drink for the man, a few drops of water spilled on the man's shoe. Seeing this, the man scolded and slapped the old man hard angrily and used the old man's shawl to clean his shoe. Raghav was watching this from his car. He felt bad for the old man. Are we really called human? Raghav thought sadly. His trance broke getting Gauri's phone. "Raghav, where are you?" Gauri asked. "Mom, you know na, every Friday I go to visit Orphanage," Raghav replied. "So you are going to orphanage now?" Gauri asked. "This is nothing but wasting your time. I really don't understand what pleasure those poor people give you more than us." Hearing her Raghav got upset. Gauri continued, "I want you to cancel visiting orphanage and come back home right now. We have organized a party for you in this evening." "Mom, you carry on, you know na I don't like party and all these," Raghav said. "No, you have to attend the party. Sinthi's family is also coming to the party. We have decided to announce your and Sinthi's engagement in the party," Saying so Gauri cut the call didn't even wait for Raghav's response. "I am a doll for them. They love to play the way they want," Raghav mumbled resting his head on the seat. But no one ever cares about what I want, Raghav thought closing his eyes. I wish there was someone for me who would understand me, loves me unconditionally, and cares for me, Raghav said in his mind. His chain of thought broke again hearing a sweet voice of a young girl, "Bhaia, Can you please make the daal puri a little faster? I am starving. I didn't eat since morning. Raghav opened his eyes and looked outside through the car window. He saw a girl with a simple and faded salwar suit standing in front of a store facing her back to Raghav. She looked very poor. After few seconds of waiting, the girl took the packet and turned around facing the way Raghav was looking. Then she went over to a nearby bench which was just a few feet away from where Raghav's car was waiting on the road. The girl was about to take a bite when she saw a little boy with no clothes on staring at her. Seeing this she asked with sympathy, "Are you hungry?" The little boy nodded coming a little closer. "Here, have this," The girl said with a smile handing the packet to the boy. Taking the packet the boy wasted no time and started eating, and seeing this, her face glowed with happiness. Seeing the smile on the girls face Raghav couldn't help but smile as well. He was so lost in her simplicity and smile that it was very hard for him to move his eyes from her. But that moment didn't last that long as the traffic has already cleared and he had to go.

When Kalpana got home she sat down on the floor to help her aai make mats. Her aai had already got many orders from different places for mats so she was trying to help her make them. While helping her Kamla said without looking at kalpana, "Go and get some food." Hearing her a smile appeared on her face. But her smile faded within a second when Kamla said, "You are already our burden and if you get sick then we can't expense any more money on you." Kalpana took a deep breath and went to kitchen without uttering a word.

On the other hand people already gathered at Singhania mansion where the party for Raghav's success was held. The party was going on full pleasure but there was no sign of Raghav. He was standing in his balcony hiding himself from the crowd. Hearing Sinthi's voice calling his name, he slipped out of the balcony, but Sinthi saw him. "Ragahv, what are you doing here?" Sinthi asked. "Let's go our parents are waiting for us," Saying so she was about to hold his hand but moved his hand saying, "You go, I am coming down. I am hungry. I need to eat something." Raghav left from there. For how long you will avoid me Ragahv. I can't bear it anymore, she said in her mind upset. "Par koi baat nahi. Sobur ka phaal mitha hota hain. I am ready to wait until I get you," saying so she left from there.

Raghav went to the place where foods were served. While putting foods on his plate a five six years old boy came closer to him and said, "Uncle, can I have some cookies? I am so hungry. I was angry with my mom that's why didn't eat since morning." Hearing the boy Raghav looked at him and smiled thinking something. Sammy came and noticed him smiling after a long time. "What happened Raghav?" Sammy asked surprised, "You seem very happy today." Hearing him Ragahv looked at him still smile on his face. After handing some cookies to the boy Raghav said with smile, "You know what Sammy, I saw a girl toda.." Sammy couldn't let Raghav finish and kept asking with curiosity, "Girl? Which girl? How do you know that girl?" "Sammy can you please let me finish?" Raghav said cutting his sentence. "Actually hearing about a girl from you I couldn't control myself," Sammy said in one go. He looked at Raghav and said, "Ok, now you tell me." Raghav placed his plate on the table and said fixing himself at the corner of the table, "Today when I was going to the orphanage. On the way when I was waiting in the traffic, I saw a girl. Very simple. Innocent. She was very poor but she had a beautiful and pure heart which really touched me." Sammy was listening to him in awe. He never heard about any girl from Raghav or saw any interest in him for any girl. Raghav continued, "You know what Sammy, though she was starving, she gave up her food to a beggar without caring about herself. I saw the happiness in her eyes for giving him the food. I never saw anyone so caring and loving like her in my life." Hearing him Sammy said, "You are wrong. She is caring and so are you." Raghav smiled. His smile faded when Gauri called Raghav and told him to come as they are going to announce their engagement. Sammy noticed this. He knew that Ragahv doesn't want to marry Sinthi and he also knew that Raghav respects his parents and never raised his voice against them. He always except their decision though it was against his will. He felt bad for Raghav.

Let's go Raghav we are going to announce your and Sinthi's engagement now," Gauri said dragging Raghav's hand to the stage. "Mom, I need more time to think about it," Raghav pleaded. He realized that Gauri was not happy with this decision. Without uttering a word Gauri left from there. He felt bad for his mom. "Sorry mom," Ragahv whispered, "I know I hurt you but please give me some time." He was feeling suffocated. Without wasting a second he left the party.

He planned to go to visit Orphanage again. Without taking any driver he drove off. On the way to the orphanage, he slowed down his car for a while where he saw that girl. He looked at that empty bench where that girl was sitting. After few seconds he left from there. He reached the orphanage. He took all the clothes he brought for the children and distributed among them. Kids were very happy seeing Raghav. Ragahv felt good spending time with them as well. For a while he removed all his loneliness.

When Raghav reached home he decided to meet his mom. When he entered into her room, he saw her sleeping on the bed. He walked toward her and sat beside her on the bed. Covering her with the blanket he whispered, "Good night mom! I will talk to you tomorrow."

Raghav was trying to sleep but his sleep was far away. Whenever he would close his eyes he would see the flashes of that girl. Her voice, her smile would ring into his ears. He got off from the bed and walked toward the attached balcony. "Who is that girl?" Raghav mumbled leaning back to the grill. "Why can't I remove her thinking from my mind?" Ragahv said putting his fingers into his hair frustrated. "Why do I feel an unknown and strange connection with her?" That night Raghav spent sleepless.

Next day Kalpana was going home from her college. Her college was far but she would walk instead of taking bus or Rikshaw. On the way to her house all of a sudden a bike stopped in front of her blocking her way. She got scared. She looked up and saw Rana who was bothering her since few days sitting on the bike. Rana got off from the bike and stood beside her. Seeing him staring at her lustfully Kalpana was hesitating and decided to leave from there. She was about to leave but Rana stopped her holding her hand. "Where are you going janemaan? Stay with me for a while," Rana said. "Please leave my hand. Let me go," Kalpana said while protesting to release her hand. "No, never. You know I been waiting for you for a long time," Rana said. He went near her ear and whispered, "I will leave you forever if you agree to spend a night with me." Hearing him Kalpana felt disgusted and was about to slap him angrily but stopped thinking her younger sister and her baba's advice. "You wanted to slap me? Wow! Bohot e garam. Maja ayega tumhare saath soney se," Rana said twisting her hand. Seeing him not ready to leave her, Kalpana bit his hand and ran from there.

Kalpana reached home. Seeing Kalpana breathing heavily at the door, Kamla asked, "What happened?" Kalpana went to drink a glass of water. Seeing her not responding Kamla put her hand on Kalpana and said shaking her shoulder," Why don't you tell me?" Kalpana jumped into Kamla's arms and started sobbing. "Aai that Rana has humiliated me today again," Kalpana said while sobbing. Hearing her Kamla said with relieved, "Oh. I thought someone died." Kalpana raised his head and looked at her aai with disbelieve. "Aai, Rana bothers me everyday but seems like it didn't affect you?" Kamla brought a mirror and said holding it in front of her, "Look at you then complain about any one." Kalpana looked at her aai as she couldn't understand what Kamla was trying to say. "Kalpana, Boys are always after beautiful girls. Why he is after you? Does he want to marry you? No right? He will not come to bite you. These boys can just throw few bad words towards girls like you. Just ignore it," saying so Kamla was about to leave from there but stopped when Kalpana said, "Aai, I don't like the way he looks at me. He has bad intention toward me. Gandhi baat kahate hai. Today he held my hand tightly. I was pleading but he was not ready to listen to me. If I wouldn't bite his hand I wouldn't be able to come out from his grip. Hearing her Kamla scolded and started shouting, "What did you say? You bit his hand. For your deed your sister will have to suffer. Your baba told you na to ignore then why did you do this?" Hearing her Kalpana was shocked. Aai, am I really your daughter? Why do you always differentiate your two daughters? Why can't you care for me the way you do for Archana? Why can't I deserve the same love you have for Archana? Kalpana thought upset. In the meantime Vittal came from his work. Seeing the situation he asked, "What is the matter Kalpana?" Seeing her Baba Kalpana felt relieved and said in her mind, Baba may do something for me. Kalpana was about to tell her baba but Kamla started widening her eyes. Kalpana then decided to ask for some money so she can come home by bus and will not be able to see that Rana anymore. "Baba, can you give me some money?" Kalpana asked. "Why do you need money?" Kamla asked. "I won't be able to walk to home from my college. I want to take bus." Kalpana replied. "Earn first then spend samjhi," Kamla said angrily, "If you can't walk then stop going to college and stay home." Kamla's each and every word pierced her in her heart. She couldn't bear anymore and left from there with a heavy heart. She came outside of the house and sat on a bench. Thinking of her aai's bitter words toward her, her eyes filled with water. "Bappa, no one is there to protect me from all the evil eyes in my life? No one is there to care for me? No one is there to love me? Kalpana thought and water started flowing from her eyes.

Looking at the empty bench, Raghav said in his mind, I wish I could see you once more. It became a regular habit for him to slow down his car on the spot where he saw that girl while coming from his office with the hope of a glimpse of that girl. And goes back home disappointed.

Raghav tried to talk to Gauri since few days but he couldn't. Gauri was very upset. One evening Raghav decided to talk to his mom no matter how much she denied. After coming from his office he directly went to Gauri's room. Gauri was taking medicine for her headache. Seeing this Raghav got worried and said walking toward her, "Mom, are you ok?" Gauri didn't reply him. "Mom, please tell me na what happened with you?" He asked her again holding her hand softly. "Who am I to you to worry?" Gauri said upset. "Mom, I know you are upse..." Gauri cut his sentence and continued, "Do you really care what I am feeling? Do you really care what your dad is feeling? We are your parents. We have right to choose a girl for you. What is the wrong in that girl Sinthi? She is from the same family we are. She is educated, beautiful. You made us wait for four long years. Finally when we decided to announce, you left us in an embarrassing situation," Saying so a tear escaped from her eyes. "Mom, I am sorry. Please don't cry. I can't see you in pain," Raghav said wiping her tears. Raghav sat on the floor and rested his head on her lap. "Raghav, we want to see you married before we die," Gauri said caressing his hair, "Can't you fulfill our wish?" Raghav was just listening to his mom without uttering a word.

The next day seeing Raghav in deep thought, Sammy asked, "Raghav, what is the matter?" Ragahv got off from his chair and walked toward him. "Sammy, I have decided to marry Sinthi," Raghav said putting his hand on Sammy's shoulder, "I can't see my parents in pain. They are my parents. I should make them happy." Hearing him Sammy took a deep breath and said, What about your happiness?" Without replying him Raghav walked toward the window. He looked at the sky and thought; I have to move on with Sinthi. I can't think about you anymore.

On the way home when Raghav's car was passing that spot he turned his head to the opposite direction so he couldn't see that girl. He decided not to look at that bench anymore where that girl was sitting. His car was passing leaving that girl sitting alone sad today.

Both of their parents were very happy that after four long years finally Raghav agreed to marry Sinthi. Both families were very popular in the city that's why this news spread in the whole city through the newspaper and television. The whole city was eagerly waiting to see the live telecast of their engagement.

Singhania family reached the venu. The venu was well decorated. There were thousands of people were invited. Minister and politicians were also invited. The functions were going on full pleasure. After half an hour Sinthi was brought downstairs. She was looking so gorgeous and beautiful with a navy blue and silver designer lahenga with diamond jewelry. People were looking at her with in awe. She came down and walked toward Ragahv and stood beside him. "Raghav you are looking so handsome with this cream and golden sherwani," Sinthi said with smile. "Thank you!" Raghav said. "Raghav, how come you didn't compliment me?" Sinthi complained. "I know I am looking so beautiful but I want to hear it from you," Sinthi said proudly looking at Raghav with smile. Raghav looked at her and said with smile, "Yah, you are looking good." Hearing him Sinthi complained again, "Only good." No problem Raghav, after marriage I will make you fall for me so crazily and you won't be able to stay without me for a second, Sinthi said in her mind.

After exchanging their rings all the couples were called to the dance floor. Though Raghav was denying going to the dance floor but he had to go because Sinthi was insisting him. She pulled Raghav to the dance floor by his hand and put her hands around his neck. She looked directly toward his eyes and said excited, "Raghav, I am so happy. I still can't believe that finally I am able to engage the most handsome man in the whole world and we are getting married soon." While they were dancing as much as Raghav tried to make distance in between as Sinthi came closer. Raghav never allowed her to come close to him. Now she is his fiance and she didn't want to leave this chance to come close to Raghav. After their dance Raghav excused himself and went downstairs to the bar. After having a soft drink he stayed two more long hours avoiding all the crowded areas at the ceremony. Then he went to his mom and lied, "Mom, I have to attend some important calls, so I'll have to go now." Saying so he left without any further interfere. (Flashback end)

Present

Raghav got into the car and told the driver to drive home, fixing himself in the back seat. While driving, the car suddenly stopped, jolting forward. "What happened, why did you stop the car," Raghav asked. "Sir, there is a van stopped in front of us," The driver said. They were waiting for a while for the van to move. After few seconds they noticed that something fell from the van to the ground. It was raining heavily so it was hard to see what it was. Another few seconds later the van left from there. When the van left the driver figured out that it was a human body. Seeing this, his eyes widened. "Sir, there is a body on the ground," The driver said scared. "Human body?" Raghav asked shocked. "Yes sir, someone threw the body from the van," The driver said. "Lets go and see," saying so Raghav was about to get off from the car but stopped when the driver said, "Sir seems like it was a rape case. After rape they threw this girl on the ground." The driver continued, "Sir, let's go home. We shouldn't be involved with this case." Hearing him Raghav got angry and said, "If you want to leave then you can leave but I will not," Saying so Raghav got off from the car. The driver also followed Raghav realizing he might lose the job. They saw a young girl laying senseless with torn salwar suit on the ground. Raghav sat on his knees beside the girl. He looked at the girl whose half of the face was covered by her wet hair. Also it was too dark that's why he couldn't see her face properly. He tried to check her pulse to see if she is alive. "She is alive," Raghav mumbled relieved. He looked at her marks on her face and neck. Seeing her state he was sure that the girl was raped brutally. Somehow he felt bad for this girl in his heart. "Bustard," The only word came out from his mouth. He took off his jacket of his sherwani and covered her body. He lifted her in his arm and placed her in the back seat of his car. Without wasting a second he drove the car by himself to reach the hospital as soon as possible.

They reached one of the nearest hospitals in 20 minutes. "She needs an immediate treatment," Raghav said to a doctor worried placing her on a hospital bed. "What happened with the patient?" The doctor asked. "Doctor, I will tell you everything later. First do her treatment," Raghav requested pleading. Two nurses were taking the girl to a hospital cabin and Raghav was walking behind with the doctor. Raghav saw a nurse was removing the girl's wet hair from her face but before her face was clearly showed he had already turn his head in the direction of the doctor, when he said, "You don't worry. We will take care of her." Raghav was about to turn his head to see the girl but was distracted again when a nurse taped on his shoulder saying, "excuse me sir. Can you please fill out this form?" While taking the form something clicked in his mind. Without wasting a second he looked back at the girl. He was shocked. He couldn't believe his eyes what he just saw. His eyes were stuck on the girl. The girl who already made a space in his heart was in front of him. The girl who stole his sleep laying on the hospital bed unconscious.

To me ones beauty lays in someone's heart. And the worst part is that there are still people out there that criticize people for their skin color. 😭
Though kamla criticizes her because of the dark skin but raghav saw her inner beauty.
