Prologue
The island of Athena
Summer 1914
Kapoor manor house
There is excitement in the air, change has come at last. Today is a day of new beginnings. Children run around the garden playing while the adults mingle. Maya Kapoor looks beamingly at the man she just married, Samar Raizaada. Samar known to loved ones as Sammy places his arm around her waist and pulls her closer to him, whispering, "happy?" Resting her head on his shoulder as she entwined her arms around his waist, she whispers, "very." Inhaling his manly scent her fangs elongate. Sammy turns towards her in surprise and says, "hungry already?" Embarrassed by her lack of control she blushes, hiding her face in his chest as she fight to control her desires. Once her fangs retract, she pulls away from his hold and says with a grin, "only you can make a vampire of over three hundred years old behave like a teenager." Laughing she walks away to mingle with the guest both human and vampire.
Morning turns to afternoon then turns to evening, the celebrations continue in full swing, showing no signs of slowing down, let alone stopping. Maya smiles as she thinks, "and so it should. Years of enmity is finally over between the vampires and the humans." Turning towards her human husband she says, "come. I want you to meet my best friend." Sammy places his hand in hers, allowing her to lead, his gaze filled with love and trust.
Maya takes a bottle of champagne and two glasses as they head for the forest and follow a narrow trail. Surprised in the direction they are heading he follows her silently. She stops suddenly causing Sammy to bump into her. She turns and smiles apologetically, "sorry I should have warned you." Placing his arms around her waist, he pulls her towards him, kissing her neck, he whispers, "it is okay." He looks ahead and sees a wide clearing. Straightening he turns to Maya and says, "where are we?" Seeing an unmarked grave at the centre, he whispers, "Maya are we in a cemetery? Why?" Noticing the tidy grave that had flowers everywhere, Sammy realised that Maya came here often to tend to the grave.
Maya walks into the clearing and says, "because I want you to meet my best friend, my confidant and my trainer." Her eyes tearing, she continues, "because I have come to pay my respects... Because we wouldn't be together if it was not for him... For them."
Maya sits by the grave, caressing the earth on it as she stretches out her other hand towards Sammy. She says softly, "hi Ragav." Giving a glass of champagne to Sammy, she raises her glass and toasts to the grave, "I got married today... To the man I love... A human... Sammy."
She rests her head on Sammy's shoulder and whispers, "I kept my promise." Sammy caresses the inside of her palm, saying, "what promise did you fulfil?" Sitting up, Maya leans towards the grave and says, "I promised myself that I would not let Ragav's death be in vain."
Standing up, she stretches her hand towards Sammy and says, "come, I shall tell you about the first love story between our kind."
They sit near a tree with Sammy leaning on its trunk his legs outstretched and Maya sitting between his legs and leaning into his chest. Once comfortable, Maya places rests her hand on her womb, feeling the heartbeat of her fledgling, she begins the tale that brought change in both their worlds.
P.S: I could not sleep until I had this written out.
