Chapter 11: Life Has Not Brought Us Together To Be Separated
Raghav looked at her, dumbfounded. He couldn't make any sense of what just happened and why it happened. He just stared at her, while she avoided eye contact in fear that her tears would fall, she would go weak and confess everything to him. She took a deep breath and looked up at him, trying to keep her extremely expressive eyes as glassy as possible.
"Sir... please accept it..." She requested him, holding up the paper.
Raghav took the paper, first gave it a look and then looked straight at Kalpi. He tore it into pieces as small as was possible and said in the calmest tone he could manage, "I'm sorry Kalpi, but I can't..."
Kalpi stared at him, shocked.
"Sir please -"
"Firstly, call me Raghav... we're not in the office right now... and secondly, I won't accept your resignation and that's final..."
"And why is that?" Kalpi exclaimed, losing her cool. "Why can't you accept my resignation?"
"I never said I can't... I said I won't. It's my decision, and even you can't change it."
"Why do you want to stop me?" Her tears were threatening to fall by now.
"First tell me why you want to leave, because I can't see any reason that would make you leave."
"That is my personal problem."
"Then maybe we can solve that problem! What's the need for such an extreme step, damn it?"
Kalpi looked away, "It is not a problem that can be solved..."
"What problem is so big that you want to leave me? Please Kalpi..." Raghav calmed himself, "At least tell me what it is... maybe we can solve it - "
"And maybe we can't..." Kalpi interjected, "Please Raghav... accept my resignation... I want to move on, then why do you want to hold me back?"
"For one your words don't make any sense right now!"
"Why can't you just accept it? Why can't you just... let me go?"
"Because I..." he paused, "Because I-I need you..."
Kalpi paused for a second, her heart elated at his words, but then a voice in her mind reminded her He loves Pakhi, not you...' She turned away wiping her tears, and said angrily, "For what, Raghav? To help you out when and for what you need? As a pawn helping you in your success? You can find hundreds of other people for that... why would you need me... just let me go, why can't you do that simple thing?"
"It's no simple thing Kalpi... you have no idea what you mean to me... please don't leave me alone..."
Kalpi looked straight ahead, not saying anything. Raghav breathed hard, struggling not to get weak. He turned her towards herself and held her hands.
"Please Kalpi... I really need you a lot... you're one of the only friends I have got, and I can't bear to lose you... please... I can't live without you... why do you want to leave me... please... don't leave me alone..."
Looking into his eyes, hearing his words, Kalpi softened, her resolve broke... she couldn't insist anymore, as she knew full well that even she can't live without him. She slowly nodded, not able to say anything. Raghav smiled and wiped her tears. She closed her eyes feeling his touch and smiled as well.
"What the hell happened to you, really? How could you even think of leaving?" Raghav asked.
Kalpi didn't say anything. Raghav cupped her face and said, "Never try to leave me again... please..." his eyes expressing the pain he felt. Kalpi nodded.
Raghav dropped Kalpi home. It was a silent drive, both were too emotional at that moment to say anything...
Kalpi tried to put up a normal expression before she entered her house. She didn't want anyone to know her emotional turmoil. She entered to find everyone in a joyous mood. As soon as she entered Kamla,Vitthal and Pakya caught hold of her and fed her some sweet.
"What happened?" She said in curiosity, and then added "Is dada getting married?" to tease Pakya.
They all laughed. Vitthal replied, "No, not yet... but it is a cause of celebration - Pakya has got a job!"
"What! Really!" Kalpi exclaimed and hugged Pakya. "Congratulations!"
...
Pakya couldn't believe it. Of all the places t find her, she was here, in his new office.
At that very moment, Sumi also turned and was shocked to find him there.
"Sumi!" "Pakya!" They both said together, their faces immediately brightened.
"I told you we will meet again!" Again they said together and started laughing.
"So how are you?"
"I am fine..."
They were getting used to this united conversation by now. "What are you doing here?" They asked each other.
"Well, ladies first..." Pakya said.
"Well, actually a friend of mine works here, so I just came to meet her... I had to talk to her..."
"Oh... about me, well... I've just joined here, today is my first day..."
"Really? Why didn't you tell me? Oh no, now I must have got you late on your first day..."
"No, no, don't worry... I had come well in advance as I didn't want to be late by any chance... so I still have some time..." Pakya assured her.
Sumi sighed in relief. "Thank god! But I won't take any more of your time, or you'll really get late... Bye..." She turned to go to the lounge.
"Wait!" Pakya called after her. Sumi turned, "What?"
"Will you be here till lunch?" He asked.
"No..." She replied, "But I'm free today... so I can come back here if you want..."
They both smiled. "See you at lunch!" they both again said together and went off on their own ways laughing.
...
Pakya and Kalpi both entered home happily. Pakya was happy as he and Sumita had spent a great time together, and had even exchanged phone nos.
Kalpi, though not entirely happy, was in a better mood as today had been a better day, and unpleasantness had been at a minimum.
