Chapter 10: Reflections
An excited Kalpi rushes towards Gauri maa as she enters her home, she gives her tight hug and says, "Gauri maa I am so happy today.", she releases herself from the hug and continues on, " Gauri maa, may I call you aai from today." Gauri maa looks at Kalpi for some seconds, her gaze filled with emotions; she takes Kalpi's hand into hers and kisses it saying, "I would love that." They both gaze into each other with love and affection... Kalpi's love is an extension for Ragav... anything that relates to Ragav she will love unconditionally, where as Gauri maa has spent many a years alone and here is somebody willing to love her and forge a relationship with her, as she is... lost in a maze where memories elude her. Kalpi stands up and bends down to touch her feet saying, "Aai, bless me for my new journey in life."
Kamlaa maa dejectedly watches the entire incident as she stands by the entrance of the house; she looks at Vithal, her eyes brimming with unshed tears and walks out of the house. Sitting in the courtyard, she thinks to herself where she went wrong... why Kalpi did not share such a warm relationship with her... As Kamla maa ponders on about her relationship with Kalpi, Vithal comes to sit by her. Kamla places her head on his shoulder and says, "Vithal, Kalpi has replaced me. Now she has tai as her aai." Vithal is very surprised to hear this; he turns Kamla towards him and says, "Kamla I never thought you would think like that... If you feel Kalpi has replaced her aai, then Kalpi is right to think you have replaced her as your daughter with Pakhi... Is it not you, who keeps questioning her way of thinking and yet today you did not hesitate to think in a similar manner."
"Kamla," Vithal continues on "You have always put Pakhi before Kalpi..." Vithal stops Kamla from interrupting him, today the fire in him as a father does not let him keep quiet, he continues on vehemently, "Don't interrupt me today... I want you to think back... name one incident where Kalpi's needs came before Pakhi's... You have always taught her to dream of equality, that her circumstances at birth does not belittle her towards achieving anything in life and yet you have always made her aware that because of her circumstances at birth she should not expect much, even from you, that her joy is not a priority in your life... Whenever you have had a choice, you have chosen Pakhi... Anything Pakhi wanted of Kalpi's, you took it away from Kalpi and gave it to Pakhi... Ragav baba asked for your daughter's hand in marriage... and you thought Pakhi... Today I have to question, what sort of a mum are you... Everything you have done so far, we let it go as your good nature... your good nature and consideration is only for outsiders; you have never taken stock of it, you haven't changed. You have done no favours to either of your daughters." Vithal looks towards Kamla disgustedly and says, "There are other things that are equally important for a child, you think your responsibility is just to educate Kalpi to fulfil your dreams. Dreams are not stagnant; they evolve to allow a person to live life too. Just because Kalpi is forging new relationships that are important to her does not mean that she will forget you or the dream you have envisaged for her!" Vithal wanted to say so much more, but instead shook his head in disgust and walked back towards the house.
Kamla maa sat back in shock silently watching Vithal walk away as silent tears fell from her eyes, for today she saw a very ugly picture of what her family thought. She reflected back to the situations over the years where Vithal always tried to raise the issues over Kalpi and how she always discounted his opinions and their emotions, thinking she knew better. She realised today, the truth in Vithal's words, she had over nurtured one daughter and neglected the other. She turned to Ganpatiji silently seeking his strength, wisdom and most importantly his help on how to correct her mistakes. It was a long night for Kamla maa.
Vithal walked up to the landing and sat down, tears silently rolling onto his lap and regret emanating from him, wishing he could rewrite the past where he would fight harder for Kalpi. He knew he was harsher with Kamla than he had ever been. He knew he was wrong in blaming Kamla alone, for he too shared some of the responsibility after all he had allowed it. He decided that history would not repeat itself this time. With a sigh, he sat gazing into the sky. It was a long night for Vithal.
Kalpi lay in bed, gazing at the ceiling, lost in thought over the occurrences of the past two days. She blushes thinking how far her relationship with Ragav has progressed. She wishes she could tell her parents and tai the truth about her marriage and that tai is Ragav's mum. With a smile, she thinks to herself "I am married... married. Mrs Kalpi Ragav Singhania" and drifts off to sleep smiling. Not once thinking of the implications and complications that shall arise due to the decision she and Ragav made.
Ragav lay sleeplessly in bed, due to the void created by Kalpi's absence. He chuckles to himself and thinks back to the changes he has seen in himself because of Kalpi. He softly says into the empty room "When did this tiny little girl become such an important part of my life", content with the choices he has made, part of him wants to call and talk to Kalpi not caring the time, but the sensible part of him stops him. He needs to be more careful for he knows that there would be hell to pay if Kamla maa and Vithal found out that he and Kalpi were already married. He personally did not care for the consequences, but he knew that Kalpi would. He wished he could find a way to get her to move in as soon as possible. With a wry smile, he shook his head and told himself, "Yea right, it's going to be a few months before you get to spend some time alone with her, let alone her moving in, for Kamla maa is going to cluck around Kalpi like a mother hen." His thoughts then moved towards his mother, his heart felt light knowing that both Kalpi and Kamla maa were there to look out for her. As happy as Ragav was with the turn of events these last two days, his desire to avenge his parents for their sufferings and for his father's death did not diminish. He would just need to back track and change course. He was not alone now, he had Kalpi by his side.
Morning saw Kalpi calling Ragav, panicking into the phone "Tai is not waking up. Tai is not waking up."
