CHAPTER 27: DRUNK AND DRIVE

"SOMETIMES WE TEND TO SAY MANY THINGS IN SUB-CONSCIOUS MIND. IT'S ALWAYS THE TRUTH THAT YOU SPEAK WITHOUT BEING AWARE."

Kalpi reached home only to find her aai,baba and dada surrounding a cake to congratulate her. They all left for Siddhi Vinayak leaving Kalpi to take some rest. Here Prem and Sahil return home and Neetu asked them about the project. Sahil tells her that they lost it to Raghav and her eyes get widened as if they wud come out anytime soon. She blurts out in about the flie stealing "Iska matlab mera Pooki ke kamre mein jaa kar file churana bekaar ho gaya. Raghav jeet kaise gaya." She was going to ask further when a strong but familiar voice confronted them. Pakhi came back to confront them about the meeting but what she heard made her head spin "Toh aap logon ne mere room se file churaai. Aur dad aap. Mujhe bachpan se pata tha ki Neetu aur bhaiya mera istemaal karne se kabhi nahi chukenge. Lekin dad aap bhi mera istemaal karenge yeh maine kabhi nahi socha tha." She goes and locks herself in the room and starts crying bitterly. Neetu Sahil and daadi get worried. Prem, though did not express it he was extremely worried for his baby sister. Sahil rang Kamla but Kalpi picked it up "Kamla baai ..Pakhi ne apne aap ko kamre mein bandh kar liye hai..please aap jaldi aa jaiye." Kalpi told him that Kamla was not there at home. She became worried for her and left for Pakhi's house. She reached there only to find the whole family surrounding Pakhi's room and banging the door. Prem tried stopping her but daadi let her in. She knocked the door and asked Pakhi to come but Pakhi told her everything from inside and did not open ther door. Kalpi felt a sudden rise of anger in her for the Kapoors but kept calm "Nahi..abhi nahi. Abhi agar Pakhi ko koi bahar nikal sakta hai toh vo sirf Raghav hai... mujhe unhe leke ana hoga." She left without saying anything which confused Prem.

Here Raghav was busy drinking and having flashbacks of the Kalpi from the day she joined the office. He kept on thinking about his sudden outburst "Maine Kalpi pe kaise shak kar liya. Vo main hi tha jisne bachpan mein uspar lagay chori ke ilzaam ko hataya tha aur aaj maine hi uspar lage ilzaam ko sach maan liya. Kya hogaya hai tujhe Raghav. Tune Kalpi pe shak bhi kaise kar liya. Vo aur Prem ki madat karegi..kabhi nahi..maine socha bhi kaise yeh sab." He was so much under the effect of alcohol that he started imagining his younger self infront of him "Tum? Tum yahan kya kar rahe ho? Mera bachpan mere samne kyun aagaya?" Young Raghav smiled and said "Arey tumhi ne toh mujhe bulaya hai. Kyun apne bachpan ko yaad kar rahe the na?" Raghav looked at his younger self and said "Mujhe kisi ki zaroorath nahi. Just get out of here." Young Raghav smirked and said "Kyun? Dar lag raha hai ki Kalpana tumhare paas aa jayegi. Tumhara khayaal rakhne lagegi." Raghav got up and said "Lekin main nahi chahata ki vo mera khayaal rakhe. Vo bohot acchi hai." Young Raghav looked at him and said "Arey vo toh vaise bhi tumhara khayaal rakhegi. Bachpan mein jab kisi ne uska saath nahi diya tab tumne uspar vishwaas kiya aur aaj kisi aur ke kehene par ek jhatke mein usey naukri se nikaal diya. Usne toh tumhaari jaan bhi bachaayi, tumhe dawaayi di aur toh aur aaj tumhe haarne se bhi bachaya. Aur tumse ek thanks nahi bola jata." Raghav turned and said "Tab mera ahem bhi baccha tha." Young Raghav gave a knowing smile and said "Kisse jhooth bol rahe ho Raghav. Arey sach toh yeh hai ki jab se tum America se wapas aaye ho tumne Kalpi pe bharosa hi nahi kiya." Raghav tried reasoning with himself and threw the wine glass in frustration.

He half lied down on the sofa when Sammy came "Yeh kya haal bana diya hai tune apna Raghav? Ek baar haar ke itne kareeb pohoch gaya toh yeh haal ho gaya tera?" Raghav looked at him and said "Sammy...mere dost. Tu bhi aa gaya mujhe samjhane... mujhe akela chod de." Sammy felt bad for him. He tried to say something when the phone rang. He picked it up and asked the person on the other side to wait. He turned to raghav and said "Kalpana aayi hai tujhse milne..kya kahoon?" Raghav sat up straight and asked him to let her in. Sammy asked if he is sure looking at his state. Raghav nodded in yes. Sammy asked the watchman to allow her. He opened the door and Kalpana stepped in. She looked at Raghav's state and felt like going and hugging him tight "Kya haal bana rakha hai inhone." She somehow composed herself and said "Sir, Pakhi ne apne aap ko kamre mein bandh kar liya hai. Please mere saath chaliye aur usey bahar nikaliye." Raghav understood how much she cares for everyone. Sammy was worried looking at Raghav's state "Tum bhi pagal ho gayi ho Kalpana? Tum Raghav ko lekar jana chahati ho iss halath mein? Vo bhi Kapoors ke ghar." Kapi looked at Raghav and said "Sir, please mere saath chaliye. Agar Pakhi ko kuch ho gaya toh meri aai mujhe kabhi maaf nahi karegi." Sammy was not ready to let Raghav go "Dekh Raghav tujhe wahan jaane ki koi zaroorat nahi hai." Raghav looked at him and said "Kyun? Isliye kyunki ek second ke liye unhe laga ki vo mujhse jeet jayenge? Ab kya karenge? Maar daalenge mujhe? Chalo yeh bhi dekh lete hain." Sammy stood there while Raghav left with Kalpi "Pata nahi inn dono ka dimaag kis direction mein chalta hai. Ek Kalpana hai jiski naukri jaane waali thi unn Kapoors ke wajah se, vo unki beti ko bachane nikli hai. Aur doosri taraf yeh Raghav hai jise bachpan se hi najane kitne dukh diye inn Kapoors ne vo bhi nikal pada Kalpana ke ek baar kehete hi..najane ab aagey kya hone wala hai." he sighed and went back to his room.

Here Pakhi was adamant and did not open the door. Neetu cried bitterly while Prem tried consoling her. Suddenly the door opened and Kalpana came in their view. They stood up confused and that is when Raghav came and stood beside Kalpi. Prem got furious but Sahil stopped him. Raghav and Kalpi entered the house together keeping each and every step together. Not a step back, not a step ahead. Neetu moved aside and Raghav went to Pakhi's room. He stood there and looked towards Kalpi and then said "Ms. Kapoor." Pakhi at once opened the door. She tried to say something when Raghav told "Kal subah sharp 9:00 pm office pohoch jana. Mujhe late comers bilkul bhi pasand nahi." Pakhi just nodded her head while he went out of the house after giving a smile to daadi and ignoring Sahil and Neetu. Kalpi wished her a good night and left after hugging daadi. Raghav swiftly walked on the streets thinking only about Kalpi while the latter was checking his personality "Seene mein dil lekin bahar se khadoos. Jab jaan pe ban aaye na kisi ki tab jaake dhadakta hai dil inka." She ran upto him "Sir, aap yahan taka aaye uske liye thanks sir. Good night sir." Raghav nodded his head and Kalpi walked towards her house. Raghav could not let her go alone "Vo akeli kaise jayegi. Main chodunga usey." He got inside the car and drove towards her. He opened the door for her to get in and she entered without any argument or questions. Here Pakhi thought that Raghav came for her while the truth was he came only for Kalpi and no one else. Kamla and family return from the temple and Pakya informs that both Kalpi and aaji are not in the house. They became worried but decided to wait for sometime.

Raghav was driving with Kalpi sitting beside him. It was pin drop silence inside the car which was not liked by Raghav and so he turned on the music. Kalpi held the seat belt tightly as Raghav was driving the car faster than needed "Car kitni tez hai. Gaari dheere toh chala hi sakte hai na. Main bhi na. Itni pee rakhi hai." she asked Raghav to stop the car but Raghav did not listen "Sir, Gaari rokiye please. Sir please gaari rokiye. Sir please stop the car." When Raghav did not give any heed she held his hand and strongly ordered "Mr. Singhania please stop the car." Raghav looked at his hand and stopped the car. Kalpi then turned to him and said "Sir, pehele toh aap gaari lock kijiye aur chaliye mere saath. Hum auto mein jayenge." Raghav turned and said "Daro mat...tumhe kuch nahi hoga." Kalpi looked at him and said "Sir iss waqt mujhe khud se zyada aapki fikar hai." Raghav looked at her surprised "Yeh meri fikar kar rahi hai...she is an angel." he sternly said "Koi meri fikar kare mujhe iski aadat nahi." Saying so he started driving the car again. He asked for a sorry which surpeised Kalpi "Sorry. Drunk and driving ke liye nahi. Gaari tez zaroor hai magar main seedhe chala raha hoon. Aaj subah jo bhi hua vo hona nahi chahiye tha. Maine jaldbaazi mein tumhe naukri se nikaal diya. Aur thanks, aaj tumhaari vajase mein haarne se bach gaya. Yeh project mere liye bohot zaroori thi. Bohot zaroori. Main humesha se hi matlabi logon se ghira raha hoon. Din ke choubees ghantey khadoos bane rehena aasaan nahi. Aur akele rehana ussey bhi mushkil. Agar koi merepaas aata hai toh main unhe apni zindagi se jhatak deta hoon. Kyunki mujhe darr lagta hai ki kahin vo mera bharosa na thod dein. Sirf main hoon aur sirf main hoon. Akela. Na koi mera saath hai aur na kisi ka darr. Tumhe jaldbaazi mein naukhri se nikalne ke liye sorry." Kalpi kept listening each and every word he said. That very instant she understood that the attitude he carried was a faade. Not that she din't realize it before but today she was confirmed. She turned to Raghav and asked for permission if she could say something. Raghav asked her to go ahead. Kalpi gulped the lump in her throat and said "Main aaj tak aapko khadoos aur badtameez samajhti thi. Par aaj main kehe sakti hoon ki main galat thi sir. Aap ek bohot acche insaan hain." Raghav took in each and every word that left her mouth. He was so lost in driving the car with Kalpi beside him that he din't even notice that they had already reached the chawl. He pressed the break harder and in a reflex held Kalpi to protect her from hitting the dashboard before him. he turned to look at the chawl and then said to Kalpi turning towards her "Vo tumhara ghar hai." Kalpi nodded while Raghav said "Jao." Kalpi indicated towards his hand which held her shoulder. He reluctantly removed his hand. He did not want Kalpi to leave his side. Kalpi thanked him for the lift and wished him a good night. She steed down the car and waved him good bye. Once he left Kalpi stood there thinking about him "Raghav Singhania. Kaun hai yeh? Har din ek alag hi personality dekhne milti hai inki. Khadoos hai par nahi. Bohot intelligent hai par bacchon jaisi bevakoofi bhi hai." she sighed and went into her house. She told whatever happened after they left for temple. Kamla called Pakhi ignoring Kalpi which didn't go unnoticed by her. She sighed as she knew that her mother would always prefer Pakhi more than her.
