Thread maker,

I'd suggest you reword the title.
It is bound to offend people,
Perhaps reword it as ' terminate the pregnancy'?

I don't know about Indian law, but in the Uk you can abort a child before 24 weeks and that is your own decision. Whether it be for medical reasons or other

^ This is completely true in the UK, dont know about anywhere else.

Actually in the UK, to be eligable for an abortion, you must fulfill certain criteria:
- there is a significant chance of risk to the mental or physical health of the woman or existing children if the pregnancy is continued
- there is a great chance of the child being born with a disability/seriously handicapped
- if the woman's life is in danger
- two practicing doctors must approve of the decision

If we apply the British system, then in Jeevika's situation, an abortion would definitley not be legal as she doesn't fit the conditions, but not too sure what India's laws are.

I would expect them to be slightly more conservative than the UK, but at the end of the day, when have CVs actually decided to do anything that at all resembles reality in any way?

It is really easy to get an abortion in India, legally I mean. Also, I believe terms for an abortion you mentioned above applies to abortions after 24 weeks...you do not need to meet the above criteria in order to get an abortion before 24 weeks.

Actually, it applies for the whole duration of the pregnancy. There is a definite rise in abortions because it's becoming the norm over the last couple of decades.

In most cases, the abortion is reasoned under the condition that there will be a significant impact on the mental health of the woman - i.e., she's too young/not ready/motherhood too soon/wants a 'future' which could go on to effect the woman adversely in later life such as depression etc.

So in some ways, as doctors are becoming more lenient in applying the conditions needed, there has been a rise in abortions and they are becoming increasingly easy to get which means people think it's legal before 24 weeks.

Hmm. Quite interesting, didn't know that. Can you give me a link to your source? So in other words, that is pretty much a formality right? So say someone goes and says that I am not ready to be a Mom yet. Then that person can be given an approval? Does that person have to prove anything?

lol So sorry for the questions. I'm just curious. lol Maybe that's how it is in the US as well.

Source wise, you can try google searching it. I haven't actually researched it per se, but just finished a course on the ethics of abortion in the UK with particular regard of where it stands within Christianity. From the course material, which was correct up to June of this year, that's what entailed with the Abortion Act of 1967.

From what I've gathered from the course and the teachers, it is pretty much a formality. Abortions are given more easily these days with doctors increasingly using the 'mental health' clause as it is quite ambiguous in where you can take it.

Doctors take the whole issue of planned motherhood, and career planning a lot more seriously these days which we can speculate for some of the rise of abortions. In terms of proof, I'm not too sure in what that actually entails, all we've covered was the conditions for abortion and the methods used (which I have to say are absolutely appalling in some cases).

Anyways, that's as much as I know :P

I don't know about India but I don't think the govt will decide whether the mother should abort the baby or not! :/
I mean...it's a mother's decision! Her right! And btw...we live in a democratic country and should definitely make our own decisions in our lives!

abortion is not illegal before 3 months...in case of unwanted child or case of serious disease to foetus, one can go for medical termination of pregnancy
