Part 10
Ignorance as bliss
She didn't know how she had managed to find the strength to walk back to her home that night. How had she found the courage to walk away from Viraat, knowing that he was alive somewhere near her? How had she found the power to submit to God's mercy this time again? Wasn't it hard enough living without Viraat? How much harder could life get? With how much more bitterness could her life be possibly filled with? She thought she had faced the worst. She now knew, the worst, was yet to come.
Someone told her once, 'Usually time alters and affects everything, but when someone you love dies, time cannot change that, no amount of time will ever change that, so time stops having any meaning'
Viraat was back, but time and life still had no meaning.
How often had she wondered what would have happened Viraat hadn't met with an accident that night? Not often, but regularly over the past 5 years. It was impossible not to have imagined that rejected future, a life of many joys, of vast and enduring happiness, of fun and laughter. It was the sense of missed opportunity that returned to her, frightening but real, overwhelmingly real.
People are supposed to fear the unknown, but ignorance is bliss when knowledge is so damn frightening. It has been hurtful to live life without Viraat, but the prospect of living life alone, knowing that Viraat was but a few miles away from her, was scary.
She sobbed into her pillow, waiting for the endless stream of tears to dry out.
'Mumma...'
'Yes beta?'
Unknown to her, CJ had crawled beside her and was half sleeping next to her.
'Mumma, why are you crying?'
'Nothing baby. I was just...'
He took his tiny hands and placed them on his mother's face and said, 'I'm sorry mumma. I shouldn't have lied to you. I'm sorry. I promise I won't eat chocolate before dinner again. I'm sorry mumma. Please don't cry.'
Maanvi laughed. There she was, thinking about the merciless test God had set for her, and here CJ was worried whether she was angry about him having chocolate before dinner.
'It's ok baby. Mumma is not angry. Come here.'
He smiled and his angelic face lit up with the happiness of knowing that his mother was no longer upset with. He snuggled closer to his mother, closed his eyes and asked the same question that he asked every time before going to sleep.
'Mumma, when is papa coming back?'
Maanvi felt like a bullet had hit her heart. She could not bring herself to answer the question truthfully, nor did she have the heart to lie. She responded by burying her face in her son's and hugging him tightly.
'Mumma, you miss him na? You miss papa?'
She choked as she tried to control her tears. Oh! Her little nave boy. He had no idea what missing was. He didn't know that missing was not just looking at someone's photograph and crying; to miss someone was to lie in the dampness of your tears night after night. Missing was a constant hollow spot in the center of your chest. Missing was a yawning ache that was never satisfied.
CJ left his question hanging in the air, stroked his mumma's hair and fell asleep.
---
He couldn't sleep that night. This time, he just couldn't get himself to close his eyes and dream about the random colors and the woman who haunted his dreams. Because this time he knew what she looked like. He knew she existed. He knew that his dreams were not a figment of his imagination. She had a connection with his past. How? He didn't know yet. But he needed to find out.
Sitting by the window, he pondered about how to get to the truth. He closed his eyes, and a scene flashed in front of him.
'Partner.'
---
She awoke with a start. She had revisited her memories again. This time, she had remembered the time she had felt breathless after one of her chemotherapy sessions and Viraat had come to her rescue.
Tere khayaal mein doobke aksar, acchi lage tanhai
Saans mein teri, saans mili toh
Mujhe saans aai, mujhe saans aai, mujhe saans aai
(Lost in your memories, sometimes loneliness feels good
Breathing into your breath, I feel I can finally breathe)
---
He had woken up in the morning, without any nightmares this time. Those visions were gone. Those flashes of light? Gone too. He wondered why? This was a good sign right? No more glimpses of a strange woman? Of unknown words and unsaid promises? This was a good thing.
But there was still something missing. Something that nagged at him-an emptiness he couldn't explain. There were mornings when he woke with his heart pounding wildly and the sensation of arms wrapped around him. But the feeling slipped away the moment he opened his eyes, and no matter how quickly he squeezed them shut again, he couldn't recapture the contentment he'd felt.
So what was this? Happiness in the guise of sorrow? Or vice-versa?
'Yes sir, I will submit that right away. I just need to finalize this.'
His walking came to a halt as he saw her on the road parallel to his. She was looking for something when their eyes met.
Even though she was standing at a distance, he could determine her every feature, as if he had memorized her every detail. How could he not, after having seen her so many times in her dreams? Her straight hair flew with the wind, and her lips were parted, forming a small 'O', and her nose and eyes were red, as if she had been crying. He wondered why. As he took a step forward, she took one back.
He kept walking towards her and she kept backing away. He couldn't understand why. Last night, she had hugged him. And now she was running away? Why?
A car honked and he realized he was standing in the middle of the road. He looked around and took a step back. But by the time he looked up, she was gone. Cursing himself, he ran towards where she had been standing. He looked around and tried to find her, but she wasn't anywhere in sight.
His heart beat increased. He couldn't let her go. He had to find her. She held all the answers to his questions to his past. Maybe she was part of his past life? Maybe, she WAS the past? He ran helter-skelter, searching for her face among the thousands walking around him. He sighed in frustration as he seemed to fail in his attempt.
Where had she disappeared to?
---
She huffed as she reached the nearest cover. He had seen her and she had seen him.
He still looked the same. Five years had brought no change in his features. Except for the change in his eyes. The eyes that had always been filled with love for her, no longer recognized her. The devotion he had for her in his eyes, all gone? That spark, that happiness, that joy that sparkled in his eyes were missing. Was he not happy in his new life?
Her chest pained at the thought of Viraat being happy with someone else. Her breathing felt uneven at the idea of Viraat being the father to a child that wasn't their own? Before she knew it, she was crying helplessly again. She leaned on to a beam and tried to find support. She couldn't focus and she stumbled forward. Before she could hit the ground though, someone caught her from behind. She turned around to look at her savior.
She didn't know whether to be happy or to be sad. Happy because Viraat was not dead, but right in front of her, alive? Or sad, because he remembered nothing about them? Should she feel nervous about lying to his face? Or should she feel calm because, as always, whenever she needed support Viraat had always found a way to be her pillar?
She jerked her hands away from him and turned around. Only to be pulled back. As usual. She kept looking down as she didn't have the nerve to look into his eyes.
'Please let me go.' She whispered.
'Not before I get my answers.'
She looked up in shock. Answers? What answers?
'I know you are a part of the life I don't remember. I know that there are things that I don't remember, but you do. You know, don't you? You know who I am. You know that I was before the accident. You know me before I forgot everything. You know right?'
Maanvi was confused. She didn't know how to respond. Viraat was acting strange. He was hyper and excited, and he was talking in a very vague way. She didn't know how to answer what.
'Please help me remember. Please. I need to know. Who are you? And how do I know you? How do you know me? What was I like before the accident? How do you know Diya?'
Every question felt like a stab in her guts.
She said as she struggled to get out of his grasp again, 'Please let me go.'
'No.'
'Please.'
'NO.'
She lost her calm and shouted, 'Let me GO, VIRAAT!'
His grip loosened and she managed to look away.
It was so hard to pull herself away from the man she loved with all heart, but to have him question about who she was more painful than what she had endured for so long. He remembered nothing. Nothing at all. There was no point in answering any of his questions. What was gone was gone. She wanted to do something, anything to make him remember, but she knew there was no way.
'Maanvi.'
She stood rooted to the spot as she heard him say her name. Was it her imagination?
She looked back at him and saw him standing in the position she had left him in. Maybe he hadn't said anything at all. Maybe it was a hallucination.
She turned away disappointed.
'Maanvi. Wait.'
