SPECIAL SUPPLEMENT - Definition of SUSPENSE and THRILLER by TRP aunty:

What is suspense?

TRP Aunty - I think questions such as, but not limited to -

- Which boy will heroine marry?

- Will they hate each other or love?

- When will they consummate marriage?

- Will heroine get pregnant?

- Will she give birth or suffer miscarriage?

- Will she have a boy or girl?

- Will saas cause trouble?

- Will she be able to handle saas' own devrani and husband's chachi?

- Will her marriage last or will she get divorced or widowed?

- Will husband accept her?

- Will quarrel between her and husband resolve or stretch for months?

- Will devar ruin her life?

- Will nanad create trouble?

- How will she overcome trouble by in laws?

- Will husband take her side or his family's?

- Will she get support from maayka?

- Will she do her own thing or become puppet?

- Will God/luck help her?

- How will she go against parivaar maryada and parampara if she discovers ugly secrets in family?

What constitutes a thriller?

TRP Aunty - Thriller means CID, Savdhan India, Crime Patrol, Sansani.

If you really ask me, then fights between husband wife, saas bahu, devrani, jethani, sauten, nanad, devar, bhabhi, naukar, sagey maa baap, sautele maa baap etc are thrilling. Ex lover jealous at new lovers, reunion of lovers, consummation scenes are quite a thrill.

May I add another question or two?

Suspense
Karva chauth ke din, Durga ka fast kaise break karega uska husband?
Kya saadi and jewellery pehnegi Durga?
Chand aayega ya nahi?

Thriller-

Teej ke din Dev kisko bada gift dega- maa ko ya Durga ko?

Shaadi ke baad jab Durga khaana banaayegi to Sakshi usko approve karegi ki nahi?

Durga ke fast se Shuarya ka paralysis theek ho jaayega?

Thank you nsapo and tina😊
@Japonica

You summed it up very well.👍🏼

Refusal to use brain, refusal to use logic, aversion to disturb status quo. And hell yeah they use it as a means to live vicariously! Dolly's comment also suits the teenaged hormonal girls who find romance dreamy.
Just see how Sakshi's maine bhi pyar kiya dialogue turned on many!🤪

Good points on Teej, Karwachauth, jewellery, new look of Durga after wedding, sarees, wardrobe! Indeed this is all they want.😆

Happily braced up for lookalike drama, saas bahu and falling in luv.🥱

I think the larger issue here is lack of education, autonomy and exposure of women and constant drivel that the only objective of their life is good husband, good sasural and being mom to male heir.

There's no dearth of TRP uncles either. Those retired old men who just watch tearjerkers or get a thrill watching suhaag raat scenes. Nothing serious, different or "complicated" for them either.

I have seen aunties in real life and seriously they are superstitious, backward and remain that way even after job and education. They just like to remain limited to gutter!

Deeply entrenched patriarchy and the fear of the consequences of questioning it. Most of the opposition to questioning the patriarchy comes from women who reap the rewards of conforming to it.
Patriarchy is not without its rewards, IF one is lucky- safety, prestige, social status, not having to face the world, financial security is many cases, children which means security in old age. All you you do conform to the rules and put up with a 'bit' of the inevitable rubbish that your TRP aunty described in her interview..
In any case, real power does come into the hands of women after a few years of marriage and mother hood, its a sort of patriarchy morphing into matriarchy. It is these matriarchs who become our dear TRP aunties when they turn on the TV after imposing their own subtle forms of tyranny in their homes. That is why they want to watch what they know, not subversive things that question and threaten their status quo. That ensures that the status quo is perpetrated over and over again till a new generation is trained into such thinking.

For those who have not reaped any of the benfits of conformign to patriarchy, nothing matters, either they want to escape into the fantasy world of sarees, jewellery, cooking, eating celebrating festivals for half an hour a day and then get back to their lives. Or worse, they do not even have access to TV.

Nice interview!! The dialogues were serial-typical...👍🏼 Maybe the CVs should incorporate these dialogues in the show and the show's TRPs would sky-rocket just like they wanted...

^^ Great Post Japonica.

Agree that brainwashing has been done by mothers who have accepted their lot in life by adhering to the Status Quo of Patriarchy for their comfort in life and hence they pass on the same advice to their daughters because they know no other way to live.

The constant need of mothers for their daughters is for them to be married.

Does it matter to them that their daughters are happy in their marriage ?

Maybe for some, but once married they cannot have an opinion or progressive thought of their own.

It matters more that they are married and have to adjust to their husbands and their in-laws and then stay married so as to not spoil their name and reputation and question their "Sanskars" for having a daughter that has the strength to question and be smart enough to want to live an equal and happy life with her husband.

And the T V industry that is mostly run by men are not going to give up their position,
so they produce these shows that show women that are submissive and with a need to have romance as a prime ingredient in their lives and make them think that without it
their life is useless and incomplete.

A strong woman that is capable of accomplishing things on her own is a threat to their masculinity and that they cannot tolerate.

Stupendous posts Japonica and Dolly!👏
Actually a thesis on women feeding partriarchy and deriving benefits from it was put forth by Kamla Shastri as well.

Women just have no self efficacy. No agency.

They, even if they are educated or know skills such as driving etc will still not do anything at all and always look out for someone to help. I know many who know how to drive but will not and rather sit helplessly and wait for men to take them here or there than drive themselves.

Many teachers at school used to laugh off and say no matter how much a girl gets educated she only has to make rotis at home.

Of course they get luxury of not going through struggle and grind of competing in outside world and living a protected, sheltered life with petty concerns.

Women are more likely to feed superstitions too than use brain. In trouble they will head to astrologers or places of worship than find solutions. I know a woman who starts suspecting black magic or evil eye the moment someone falls sick in family! Mind you she is highly educated and working herself but still averse to logic.

I know how women managing on their own are made fun of or looked at with shock or rumours are made about them.

Nowadays I see some people marrying off their boys early too so that they do not get "spoiled".

Women like Durga who if they do things on their own and are confident are a threat to male ego. So are fathers like Dayal if their only prime concern is anything other than marrying off the daughter. If women and children started doing things themselves then perhaps male superiority will be threatened.

I am a female but myself blame women equally for all gender stereotypes and backwardness.

There are women like Sakshi who, instead of using their brain to make their own empire, will rather latch on to a powerful man and feed off him. Now that she has little control on him, she feeds off her son.

I know a troll on BW forum of this site who says all modern things suck and as a woman she hates it why she has to study and why can't she marry and pop out kids soon. She says she should not have to work and only man should do everything. LOL! I wonder if it is a female for real or a male who writes frustrated rants on women today!

Partriarchy helps women play victim card, hide behind excuses and not keep control. Much more comfortable to blame God, fate, society, men then.

These serial women are themselves just daughters or wives feeding off rich daddies or husbands. Who among them is self made? Asha Parekh was a self made producer but even she made a regressive trashy serial only.

As a cotton candy they make men dumb to show woman or her locket/sindoor/fast saved his a**.🤪

I think most people are also dumb this is why serials equate dumbness with goodness and intelligence with evil so to boost ego of dumb masses.😆

Society is averse to logic or progress. They seem to revel in predictability.

I lament even watching KBC, how much gimmicks they have to do, bring easier questions, filmi songs and stars, focus on rona dhona over game and GK now.

No wonder evolutionary studies show that size of human brain is progressively shrinking!

you guys have all put up some interesting points. it is true that i have myself experienced educated women who rather fit the status quo and rocking it bring in unpredictability that they don't like and don't want to question. women and men are equally important in ensuring gender equality and it is sad that some women do not support their fellow women.
i think you should do a TRP uncle interview if you have not already done one.

well ask if they like gori or dark girls, who have to always end up in a wet rain somewhere dressed in white. i find that always irks me.
