First of all, a big 'Thank you' to everyone who commented and liked Chapter 3. I am overwhelmed with the positive response. I hope this chapter lives up to your expectations. Fingers crossed!

The story picks up from where it took off. I thought of many scenarios of how the plot unfolds. This is what I thought was best suited to the story. I hope you like it! If not, my apologies.

Chapter 4

At 8AM, Malhotra Mansion

Ramnath was having tea in the living when Shravan barged in. "Papa, I want to speak to you it's something important."

"Yes beta, tell me." said an unassuming Ramnath.

"What happened between you and Nirmala Ahuja?" asked Shravan outright. "Why are you asking me this? I have already told you, haven't I? Don't you trust me?" said an outraged Ramnath.

"Ofcourse I trust you Papa. I trust you to tell me the truth. I want to know the reason why my mother, your wife, left us. The real reason." said Shravan, almost pleading.

All this time, Kamini was hearing what went on between father and son. Hearing Ramnath almost shout, everyone else came down. Seeing this as a perfect opportunity to get what she wanted, she spoke. "Bhaisaab, I think its time to tell him the truth" she said looking at a astonished and puzzled Ramnath. "I'll tell you the truth puttarji. You must be aware that your mom was a working woman. It is understandable for a woman to work when there is a need for it, that is, when the man is not working. But your mother took it to another level. Even after Bhaisaab got a case, she persisted on working. She had become so irresponsible, I tell you. Your father tried so hard but couldn't make the marriage work. So, divorce was the final solution. Your mother was going to take you away from your father by appealing for custody. In order to save you from her, he threatened to tarnish her image in your eyes. Hearing this she left. But the nerve of the woman, asking for your custody after painting the town red with..."

"Enough!" roared Shravan. "I am not going to let you malign my mother's name any more than you've already done" saying this he turned to his father. Kamini was happy beyond words. The entire Malhotra household was in shock seeing Shravan's outrage.

He turned to his father and said "You? You threatened mom? You threatened her? But why? I trusted you with my life, I did all that you asked of me. She left us and I never questioned you about it, I always believed what you said. But what did you do? You painted such a bad picture of her. You made me hate her. You threw her out my my life."

All the moments started flashing before his eyes. His childhood memories with his mother, his parents fighting, his departure to London, seeing Nirmala in Tiwari Qilla, Suman's pleas, Nirmala's sobs and Ramnath's outburst. The cat was out of the bag. The puzzle was complete. The missing pieces of the puzzle were put together. The betrayal, was out in the open.

"Shravan, I love you. You are my son. This is her attempt to distance you from me. She is not a good woman. She has plotted to take you away from me. For this, she has enlisted Suman. That liar of a girl..." said Ramnath, in his last attempt to salvage the situation.

"Not another word against my mother or Sumo. Sumo might be a lot of things, but she is not a liar. I will not have you, out of all the people, talk like that about her. Let this be the first and the last time I speak to you." Shravan was now at the brink. His voice began to crack, "I never thought you would do this to me, Papa. Never try to speak to me again, ever. Our relationship is over. Nothing on your part can change that. Nothing." Saying this, Shravan stormed out. he went to his room and banged the door shut.

The whole family stood there, looking at Ramnath. A man once successful, envied by all, now stood before his family fallen and disgraced. On the other hand, there was someone whose happiness knew no bounds. It was Kamini. She had achieved what she set out to do. She had created a wedge between the father and son. She knew she would get all that she wanted, with Shravan out of her way.

Behind the locked door, Shravan lay on his bed, almost lifeless, his breath sharp and eyes bloodshot. Pushkar kept banging the door, calling out to him but his cries went unheard.

Shravan's whole life played out right before his eyes. "I have lived a lie my whole life. I have hated the person who loved me. I wronged the girl whom I loved. I didn't believe a word of what she said. What was Sumo's fault? She just wanted me to see my mother. To unite us. What did I do? I wronged her, berated her and told her that I hate her. I pushed my mother away from me, said such awful things about her. Why didn't I question anything?" he thought.

He was lost for words. He didn't know what to do. His life had been nothing but an illusion, a conspiracy orchestrated by his father. He felt defeated, cheated and abandoned.

The first, of many realisations dawned on him. The person who he trusted blindly, considered family, loved unconditionally, had betrayed him.
