But I can give you movie maker tips 😆

So I use the fade to black/fade to white/or fade in between transitions ONLY all the other ones look cartoonish. I adjust the brightness on certain scenes (if they're supposed to be a flashback, a very important scene, etc. depends from vm to vm) and I keep that constant within that one VM. Rarely I'll use the black and white effect.

I think the key is editing with what you have, so like if you have no "emphasis" effects just cut the scene you are trying to portray with the fade to black and make sure it's on beat with the song and it'll look like emphasized and give just the effect you want :)
