Radha's Story could've made sense adapting Memento or Ghazini Mode

What set apart Christopher Nolan's "Memento" was it's nonlinear narrative structure and it's unique screenplay that spawned many imitations in Aamir Khan's Murugdoss directed "Ghazini" or the original Tamil imitation that starred South superstar Surya.

"Memento" received critical acclaim for it's presentation of two different sequences of scenes: a series in black-and-white that is shown chronologically, and a series of color sequences shown in reverse order. Two plot lines, simultaneously developing in opposite directions, and joining in a final scene at the film's conclusion.

"Memento" made the nonlinear narrative structure and Neo-noir style fashionable and successful with many a films later trying to follow the "Memento" example with it's motifs of memory, perception, self-deception, grief, and revenge. (Source: Official Website)

Ek Boond Ishq started off with similar motifs and could've adapted a nonlinear narrative structure to tell the story of Radha instead of trying for a "chicken-and-egg" story as to which came before and which came after or in trying to rehash a plot that has lost all it's refinement.

To be honest with you thrower I don't watch anything else. EBI is top and only one on the list for me. I'm thoroughly enjoying the show as it's reached a climax that leaves me literally bitting my nails.

I had given up on daily soaps until EBI so for me it is something worth my time.

hey Rama,
Nice post, couldnt control myself from replying when i saw my favorite director Mr Nolan being mentioned here.

Yes, u r right...about the non linear approach for the movie memento by Nolan...the non linear direction, flashbacks, twists and most importantly dark inner emotions/turmoil/human psych ...these things set his movies apart. no1 can replicate them better than him.. saying this as i've collection of all his movies since long time.. and being his ardent fan i can say one thing this is more suited for a limited audience and needs patience and wit to understand this approach.

But i disagree here when this is compared to Ek Boond Ishq... after all it is a daily serial... this is about romance , so non linear approach will make the audience loose interest slowly since non-linear approach will not work for a daily serial aiming for a long run...

I'm happy CVs kept Radha's story simple and subtle...she just entered MRiAra's life to make them acknowledge their Love openly so that they will be one soul implying the theme of Ek Boond Of Ishq...

in the movie Ghajini, the approach clicked because it was based on Love & Revenge of lead characters...these 2 words enough to make anyone wanting more..
.but as per indian audience they are emotinal about hero-heroin chemistry...as long as that is stable they dont bother much about other characters..

People are more concerned about Mj-Tara and not Radha as long as she is not disturbing their privacy..If they show this in non-linear fashion like her entry, her love for MJ, her desperation for proving MJ's innocence, or even her struggle from KalaVati...it would have made the existing screenplay more complex...

I dont think the story has lost its refinement...we already knew one day Tara will prove MJ innocent...(no clue about radha at that time) and the story is being executed like that only...

indian TV serials run through TRP system so they have to follow the usual few steps in general even though they seem/claim/actually r UNIQUE

PS: I would say "many times things may lag or not run smoothly as per our interest or expectations...But in that case we should always wait for the right time and give few chances for betterment if we r really concerned about it that much.".

hello dear how are you😊...aapki post ki tariff karne ki mai jaroorat nahi samghti😉😃...rahi baat radha rani ki toh mughe lagta hai iss character ko zinda karna cv ki sabse major mistake rahi hai,aaj radha rani chali gayi lekin uski entry show me kyo karayi gayi mughe samgh nahi aaya😕😕EBI ki story kabhi bhi "Gajani" jaisi nahi ho sakti thi (aur ye acchi baat hai, warna show bahut typical ho jata) ,kyoki show me 1st day se tara ko show ki heroine dikhya gaya, agar tara side heroine hoti toh story ko radha per based kiya ja sakta tha per aisa nahi tha...
mughe seriously lagta hai show me radha rani ko zinda karne k bajay kisi eye-witness ki entry hoti toh show jyada interesting ho gaya hota, radha rani k character ki wajah se show se ek saath ''mystry ,logic aur mriara k magical romance k jadoo'',sabki ek saath watt lag gayi, per aaj uski bidayi ho gayi hai,so mai hope and pray karti hoon ki show me ab pahle jaisa sab interesting ho jaye...Amen😃

Haha Masta and Sehru, EBI is that good haan! Good for Saba and LOK!

Sonal: By speaking about Ghazini, I only meant about "nonlinear narrative, and regarding your view that it will not work in this instance or that it will not work for EBI per se, or that it will not work for a "long-running" TV show, how do you know? And your contention that other shows have tried it or that it happens in other shows is so not correct, nowhere in Indian Television has a non-linear narrative been used. It needs intelligence and gumption to do it, and let's not talk about TRP's. Life Ok would never've taken up this project has it been thinking ratings, it took up this show, as it wanted to do something different, and it took a lot of guts to do such a show as Ms. Saba Mumtaz mentioned in her interviews.

A non-linear narrative if effectively, intuitively, creatively, intelligently used could have worked wonders in bringing Radha back from the dead. Here Ghazini or Memento (Memento by the way is a industry measure for the best non-linear narrative for which Nolan even got an Oscar nomination for screenplay from a story written by his brother) were only used as MERE EXAMPLES and standards, and were not used to COPY the storyline or replicate the storyline.

Television has more advantages over film as in film you have to tell a story in 120 minutes or so if it is Hollywood and 180 minutes or so for Bollywood and regional language films, so what is the harm in trying out something new? What is the harm in taking a calculated risk? Don't tell me, this is HOW it is in TV, I do know how it is in TV, I am not a novice.

Bringing Radha back from the dead was a calculated risk they took, when they realized that it is not adding any value to their storyline or their numbers, they are axing it, if at all the Radha story had any chance of survival, they would've just made her disappear, why kill her?

Thanks for adding your valuable opinion and your adept/expert understanding of Television shows.

Tina: Absolutely agree with your contention that bringing Radha back from the dead was not such a grand success story and was at worst a darn easy trope and plot device.

EDIT: Sonal, it was not marketed as a mere lovestory, two, you are underestimating Indian audience, I don't think the urban Indian/Global/Asian/South Asian woman is only looking for romance, they DO need a good story and that too intelligent storytelling, and they want to be surprised. LOK knows it's "REACH" and "TARGET" - while you guys only talk about ratings or TRP's, the channels and their advertisers usually concern themselves even with REACH, TARGET and other factors. They after all know their business best having come from top level management schools, with years of experience making and selling content. The Indian Television industry hires some of the best brains, as one of my friend's also concurs.

Memento was very confusing!!!!!😕 😕 😕

I don't think India audience will be able to follow it in a daily soap!!!!

And in that movie or Ghajini, she was his lover and it was a love and revenge story!!!!

Thankfully Radha was never MJ's lover!!!!

And bringing her back from the dead was the worst decision they ever took which messed up the whole plot!!!!😒 😒 😒 😒 😒

So I don't think a non-linear narrative like Memento could have worked here!!!!!
