Hi All,
I couldn't help but make a topic on Urmi's grandmother. As always let me start off by saying that I really don't intend on offending anyone or hurting anyone's sentiments by means of this post. I am merely expressing my thoughts.
Urmi's grandmother has annoyed me from the beginning of the show (no offense to the actress) but the characterization and subsequent portrayal have been very accurate. She really is that small town regressive - stuck in her ways sort of granny we have all come across at some point in our lives. I find her suffocating in the name of tradition. Personally I find her more regressive than traditional.
Traditionalists as I understand it - like to uphold traditions - they take pride in handing down values and practices from generation to generation - while they are reluctant to changes - its more from the perspective of things being lost and forgotten - the easiest comparison I have would be a dying language - the less people learning the language - over time the language will just be extinct. Urmi's grandmother - does fit that description but for the wrong reasons - she is so blinded by societal norms and gender roles that this clouds her judgement of good vs bad.
One doesn't have to be progressive or modern to understand the difference between what is detrimental to one's existence and what enhances someone's quality of life.
It should be pretty obvious to anyone that Urmi is not happy with Samrat - he does not treat her well, he slapped her for goodness sake and the granny was there to witness first hand how arrogant, rude and insulting Samrat's behavior was towards them when the ladies of Urmi's family went to visit the newborn baby - how does she not see this?
I think it is because she is choosing to be blinded to the facts - she's so warped in "a woman's place is in her husbands house", "what will society say", "good girls suck it up and deal with things and COMPROMISE" and a whole slew of regressive sentiments.
This brings me to the crux of my post - how can a woman be so insensitive towards another woman? Does the granny not stop to think by putting herself in Urmi's shoes - what kind of life that must be? Did the granny live such a miserable life herself that she considers this the norm? Is this that vicious cycle of a victims of abuse turning into abusers? Why are people like that so hell bent on proving that progressive thinkers are "bad" - their attitude towards Trisha is a prime example - their grievance towards Trisha is solely because - Trisha wears modern clothes, she is ambitious and has the courage to stand up to evil - their version of gender roles clearly clouds their judgement on Trisha - who also has deep rooted values - she thinks well of others, she's caring and basically a nice person - she's just more worldly because she tries to be - I can't see anything wrong here.
Aren't elders supposed to be wise? Since they've lived through it all - wouldn't they want to find ways to make things better/easier - not have mistakes/atrocities of the past be repeated?
These are just my thoughts - it blows my mind to think how one woman can be so insensitive towards another and I'm trying to understand how this is possible.
Thanks guys!
