Rantara One shot :

|| The Wall Between Us ||

Raghu was in a good mood. The canvas painting he wanted to acquire for so long was finally here. Smiling brightly, he held the 4 by 4 canvas in his hands and began to inspect the walls around his room trying to decide where to hang it and finally decided to hang on the wall above his bed.

Taking the necessary tools, Raghu began to clear the area shifting the furniture away from the wall. Raghu took the measurement of the canvas and after drawing the marks on the wall, he took the nails and hammer and began his work.

BANG BANG BANG

Antara who was sleeping in the room on the other side of the wall groaned in frustration and buried her face deep in the pillows. Opening her eyes, she started at the wall opposite her. The sound was coming from there and she knew who was responsible for it. She glanced at the clock and fumed even more. It was 7 am and a Saturday no less! From all the days, he had to choose a Saturday for it.

Gritting her teeth, she laid back praying hard that his work would be done in a second. But it still continued. Throwing back her coverlet, she got up and went near the wall and shouted.

"Hey! Its 7 am in the morning! Stop with the hammering!"

Raghu gritted his teeth as he heard his neighbors' shout from the other end. Their relationship as neighbors was not cordial. he did not remember a time where they did not fight. Even during the community meetings, people try to keep them as far apart as possible because even they know that keeping them in the same room is hazardous.

Raghu was a kind of guy who likes to live life to the fullest. He care less what people think. He does whatever he wants and however he want and this irks Antara. She is more reserved. She is carful and organized. She follows her daily planner and is always on a schedule.

Raghu thought for a moment and began to hammer again just for the pleasure of annoying her. it wasn't long when he heard a door close with a loud bang indicating that she has left. Smiling in triumph, raghu walked over to his kitchen to fix something for breakfast.

Half an hour later, putting on his headphone, he began to work again. it was taking a lot more time for him to hang up a painting but he knew that it will be worth it. He has attached a lot of nails on the wall and looking at it he felt that he have created a nail art on the wall.

"I'm on a Highway to HELL!" Raghu began to sing the AC/DCs Highway song in full volume moving his body to the metal music. He turned and began to dance and was engrossed in it that he did not hear the faint crack behind him.

(listen to song here 😉: AC/DC Highway to Hell : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mBjwMSIC7ik)

The wall began to crack and then began to spread through the holes he has made one by one.

Raghu twirled and grabbed the nearby broom and began to play it as a guitar.

The cracks spread throughout the whole wall causing a fissure.

Oblivious to what was happening, raghu kept singing and playing his guitar' and dropped on the floor as the last cord struck in the song.

When the song ended, he turned around as he heard a loud crack behind him, his eyes widened as he saw the wall came crumbling down.

"oh no!" he whispered in horror. And just then, door on the other side opened and Antara stepped into her room.

Antara's jaw dropped open seeing the mass of bricks lying on the floor where there was once a wall. Antara stared at it in horror and looked up to see her neighbor staring back at her with an expression matching her own. The only difference was that he was holding a broom.

Antara walked towards the bricks in a daze looking at the gaping hole in her apartment. She did not have any fond memories with the wall, but bloody hell it's a part of her room!

Anger began to bubble inside her as she began to remember the hammering she heard early in the morning. Her mind began to race with several possibilities as to why the wall came down like that and seeing the look on Raghu's face, she knew. She knew that HE was responsible. Taking a deep breath trying to calm herself, she began to tie back her hair and knot her dupatta to her side.

Raghu did not know what else to do. He stood there frozen and kept staring at Antara and then back to the heaps of bricks. His eyes darted back and forth till he became dizzy with it. Raghu silently began to pray to save him from her wrath. He knew that it was his fault. He should have known better to ask the maintenance guy if the wall was strong enough to handle the holes.

"umm...Miss Kaul?" Raghu called her hesitantly. She was suspiciously quiet and the eerie silence she was maintaining was scaring him. She looked up at him and gave him a weak smile and began to walk towards him. With every step she took, he took a step back until she came toe to toe with him. His leaned back a bit and gulped before asking. "I'm sorry?"

"you broke the wall?" She asked in a very calm tone.

Raghu blinked and stared at her.

"Did you?"

Raghu blinked again. She was staring at him with wide eyes. He could not discern if they were filled with anger or something else. His mind screamed to tell her no but he felt his head nod at her question.

"Oh so it WAS really you" Antara sighed turning away. "I was hoping you'll deny it"

"What?"

"you know when I first heard you hammering, I told you to stop" she said in a more calmer tone than before.

yep, its definitely anger' He decided seeing her eyes flash with anger. Without delay, he took the broom in his hands and pointed at her.

"don't come near me or-"

"or what?" she challenged. "sweep me with it?"

"I will do it" he said stupidly. "I...i will sweep you with this"

Antara gave a little smirk at his words. Raghu was baffled at his behavior. He was a three time boxing champion at college. He is an art dealer. He can debate any topic and burn the other's ears with his arguments but with her in front of him, standing hands on her hip, eyes flashing in anger had made his tongue tied to knots. He can't seem to realize what he is saying. Nothing he wanted to say was coming out of his mouth. He was stammering and uttering rubbish like an idiot that too in front of a mere slip of a girl. He can almost hear his college degrees and trophies laughing at him.

Her smirk sparked a sudden anger in him and he threw the broom away which was once used as weapon to protect him. He took a menacing step towards her trying to intimidate her but she did not budge and instead held her ground. He was impressed by her gut.

"Listen Miss Kaul, if you think I did it on purpose then you are solely mistaken"

"You broke my wall" She snapped at him.

"that was my wall too" he snapped her back. "I was trying to hang a painting when it collapsed how will I know that its too weak to hold nails" he continued omitting out the exact number of the nails thinking that it will send her into a frenzy.

"God! You are an idiot, how can you not ask the maintenance about it before you decide to put holes in the wall! That is the basic thing that you do. YOU ASK THE MAINTANANCE!" Antara felt like pulling her hair out.

"Hey!" he shouted back at her but he did not know what else to tell her. She was right and he was fighting an argument that he knew will lose at the end. "stop screaming, I said I will fix it, its not a big deal"

Antara scoffed at his reply. "no big deal?! Yeah I cant see how its NOT a big deal when I sleep on my bed and wake up to find you sleeping across the hall. I want the wall back up now!"

"will you stop screaming?! If you don't stop the next thing that will come crumbling down will be the roof!"

Antara stared at him for a moment. She was burning with rage and all he wanted for her to do was shut her up! That was it, her patience snapped at the mention of the roof crumbling down and she did not even think before letting out a war cry and charged on him.

Raghu did not know what happened. Once he was standing perfectly still and the next moment he knew was that he was on the ground Antara was on top of him trying to strangle him. He tried to fight her off but she was too strong. The girl was too strong for him to control. Raghu tried his best to tackle her but failed miserably. He knew he was doomed to hell. He closed his eyes and then began to pray.

Rukhsaana and Aman was coming back from their breakfast date when they heard a commotion from their neighbors' apartments. Panicked, both Rukhsaana and Aman rushed to Raghu's apartments and broke open the door only to find Raghu lying on the ground with Antara on top of him strangling him.

Rukhsaana stifled a laugh seeing them fighting like 5 year olds. She glanced at aman who gave her a don't-you-dare-laugh' look to which she had to gnaw at the sides of her lips before rushing to help them.

Raghu and Antara fought till Aman and Rukhsana tore them apart. Antara was still trying to lunge on to him but aman shielded Raghu and rukhsana held her by her waist holding her back.

"what is wrong with you both!" Aman cried in frustration. "Why are you acting like children!"

"He broke my wall!" Antara said giving raghu a deadly stare.

"Hey! It was my wall too! I did not do it do it on purpose" Raghu snapped in irritation. He was getting a little tired of hearing the same accuse again and again.

"Whatever were you thinking---"

"Enough both of you!" Rukhsana shushed them both in her most strict school teacher voice. Although Rukhsana felt like laughing, she decided that it's best to save the laughter for later and try to control her friends who were likely to kill each other any moment.

"there is no point in fighting" Three pair of eyes turned to her in unison. "Aman, call the maintenance let them know what happen" Aman nodded his head and took out his cell to call and left giving both Raghu and Antara a warning stare.

"And you two, being adults cant you act like one? You both could have saved a lot of time in fixing this mess instead of fighting like this" and just like that, both Raghu and Antara looked down embarrassed. Rukhsaana was having a hard time trying to hide her smile seeing the expression on both of them. They were looking like one of her students who kept her head bowed when being scolded.

Several minutes later, the maintenance guy came to check on the damage and suggested to put up a curtain for the time being. Both Raghu and Antara were staring daggers at each other. Rukhsaana pulled Antara out of Raghu's apartments and began to clean up the mess. At the other side, Aman was helping Raghu all the while both aman and rukhsaana kept listening to raghu and antara grumbling and cursing each other.

Aman and Rukhsaana finally managed to calm them down and left the apartments saying they will come to check on them later. When they got out, they left a huge sigh of relief. "handling them is exhausting" Aman said leaning near his apartment door while rukhsaana began to dig her purse to find the keys.

"Yes, I know they are still kids who need to be...dammit where are the keys!"

"you know" Aman said thinking. "I don't think they will stay quiet tonight, they both are in a mood to kill"

"I know" Rukhsaana said smiling as she pulled the key out and opening the door. "want to bet on that?"

"yes" his eyes lit up. "10 bucks to see who break first"

"Fine, I bet on Antara" Rukhsaana said smiling proudly.

"Nah, it will be Raghu"

"We'll see" Rukhsaana smiled widely shaking his hands before pulling him in into their apartments.

Raghu was lying on his couch staring at the curtain where once stood a wall. He knew it was his fault and he do feel bad for it but every time she opens her mouth about it, it irritates the hell out of him. His fist clenched as he heard her move about. The woman was hell annoying wearing heels in her own room.

CLICK CLICK CLICK CLICK

Raghu gritted his teeth as the sound continued in equal rhythm. Once in a while, she would stop and he would let a huge sigh of relief but then again, she would begin again. He groaned and pulled a pillow over his head and closed his eyes and tried to block the sound of her heels. The irony of the situation was not lost to him. Just this morning he was doing the same to her and now she seems to have got her chance. Groaning again, he squeezed his eyes shut silently praying that she would stop moving.

Antara was pacing in her room. For the past hour she has been waiting for Anshuman to pick her up for their office party. She has been wearing her best sari with a low cut back. She purchased the red see through low back sari with rosettes on it just for the night's event. She checked her phone once again but still there was not a single message or missed call from anyone at her office. No one seemed to be missing her. it was past eight and there was still no call from anyone. She began to feel more restless. Thinking that it was high time that she call Anshuman, she dialed his number.

With the first three ring, he picked up the phone. "Anshuman? Where are you? I've been waiting for an hour"

"Sorry Antz, can't come to pick you, got held up" Antara heard him slur his words. She rolled his eyes at it. She knew he was drunk. again.

"How am i going to go now? Its late and why is no one picking their phone?"

"Huh? Sorry babe, its just no one want you to come" he giggled and hiccuped before continuing. "they told me not to pick you up. They don't want you here you know"

Antara froze at his words. Her eyes began to sting. She knew her colleagues don't like her because she was hardworking and don't give a damn about anyone. But keeping her away from an office party like this was just pure vindictive. She swallowed hard and blinked back her tears. "Well you all can go to hell then! Don't you EVER call me again!"

She clicked her phone shut and threw it on the bed. She kicked off her heels and sat on the bed. She refused to cry over the matter. They were not worth it. It was just a stupid party anyway. She thought. Sighing she curled up into a ball and closed her eyes.

Not long her she opened her eyes once again as she heard her phone buzz. Irritated she picked up and checked the caller ID. It was her mom. Antara was puzzled as to why her mom was calling her at this hour or why she was calling her at all.

Ever since she has moved to Mumbai her mom has distanced herself from her. she didn't call nor send any message and she would not even meet her whenever she came to town. It was like as if she was waiting for that one moment when she would move out of her life. Antara had a hard time adjusting to her Mumbai life when she moved in 5 years ago and she needed a guide but her mother flatly refused to help her in anyway. Antara felt dejected and never asked for anything afterwards. Sighing Antara answered.

"Hello Mom, what is it? Why did are you calling so late? Is everything all right?" Antara asked. She heard silence at the other end and her worry began to increase. "Mom?"

Antara listened to her mom at the other end and froze. Her phone slipped through her hands. Her eyes began to sting and not long she felt her chest heave. She began to rub her chest trying to reduce the pain that was building up inside her. Antara lay back on the bed and stared at the ceiling. It was not long, she once again curled to her side clutching her pillow to her face and began to cry softly.

Raghu woke up at the sound of muffled sobs. Confused he turned to see where the sound was coming from. He went towards the window thinking that it must be coming either from the above or below apartments. But he heard none. Again the sound came this time from behind the curtains. He strolled towards the curtain and was about to lift it a bit but decided against it. Never has he heard Antara cry. He has always seen her either fighting or giving orders. But not like this. Never like this. And he was feeling uneasy hearing her like that.

Taking a deep breath, he lifted the curtains and stepped inside her apartments. What he saw was completely unexpected. Raghu saw that she was curled into a ball and her loose hair was shielding her while her face was buried in the pillow. He noticed that she was wearing a very low cut backless sari and it was exposed for all to see and he quickly averted her gaze not wanting to think of anything...indecent. He winced at the thought of thinking anything like that about her.

He stood for a moment and then cleared his throat. Antara looked up and saw Raghu standing there staring at her. Antara wiped her tears with the back of her hands and stood up. She was tired of fighting. She had no mood to fight at all. "What do you want?" She asked tired.

"I heard you" He paused. "Are you okay?"

"Fine" she nodded. But her eyes began to sting again and she began to cry in earnest. The three words are you okay' broke something inside her. It has been so long since anyone has asked her if she was okay. Raghu's eyes widened as he saw her bury her face in her hands and cry. He moved quickly to her side and saw a scarf hanging on a nook and grabbed it. He sat beside her and awkwardly handed her the scarf.

Antara felt her bed dip and she looked up and saw Raghu handing her a scarf. She gave a weak smile at his attempt. Poor guy did not know that one should not hand a girl her own scarf to wiper her tears. She took it from his hands and wiped her tears. He sat nearby not uttering a word. His presence and silence was giving her an unexpected comfort. Her pallu was about to slip from her shoulders when he caught it and pulled it up. His fingers trailing her shoulders. It sent shivers down her spine. They both stared at each other lost at the moment before Raghu cleared his throat and moved away. Antara looked down and whispered. "I'm sorry"

Raghu looked at her and asked. "for what?"

"I know you hate being here right now"

"Actually, I came to ask you if you have anything to eat" Raghu said all of a sudden. Antara jerked her head up and narrowed her eyes at him. He gave her an awkward smile and said. "There you go, you look good when you are spitting fire"

Despite the initial annoyance at his words. She smiled. She knew now that he was trying to make her feel better by talking nonsense. "Thank you"

"wow! A sorry and a thank you all in one breath" Raghu whistled. "are you sure you are fine?"

"Shut up!" she rolled her eyes giving a watery chuckled. They both laughed a while and Raghu sobered once again and said.

"Are you really okay?"

Antara looked at him. He was staring at her so deeply that she felt like telling him everything. But he was still a stranger to her. though they has been neighbors for the past five years, he was still a stranger.

"I'm not okay" She sighed before adding. "But I will be"

"Good, so I'll see you later" Raghu nodded to leave but turned and ask. "don't you really have anything to eat? I'm really hungry"

Antara smiled fully this time. The guy can be charming if not annoying. "sorry, I was about to go out tonight so didn't cook"

"Oh well, goodnight then" Raghu gave a sad smile and left her rooms.

Antara sat thinking for a moment. She strolled near the curtain and lifted it up and saw Raghu hanging nearby his kitchen opening the fridge looking at it like a lost puppy. Antara felt a smile creeping up her face. Shaking her head, she stepped into his apartments. "Raghu"

Raghu lifted his head up as he heard Antara call out to him. "I'm going to make dinner, want to join me later?"

Raghu closed the refrigerator door and leaned back and stared at her before asking. "Are you sure?"

"Yeah! I need something to eat too. And I just remembered, my stove needs to be fixed too so, can I cook here?"

"Yeah sure, I'll help"

Raghu suggested making marinated shrimps but hearing his stomach growl in protest, Antara laughed aloud and decided to make something that will take less time, like a sandwich.

Antara was cutting out the vegetables when she felt the strands of her hair on her face. Her hands were soaked with tomatoes and she tried flipping it back but failed. The strands were coming out all the more.

Raghu who was watching her in amusement stepped beside her and took the strands of her hair behind her and began to tie it to a knot. He worked on it slowly, taking time to brush every little strand to the back. He never knew how silky her hair was, like his own. Soft to touch. Mesmerizing was the word he would have used if he were writing a book.

Antara felt Raghu behind her. There was no word from him as he began to pin her hair back up into a bun. His fingers sent shivers down her spine and every time he tugged her hair, she gets goose bumps. Antara held her breath as he worked on her hair. Finally after it felt like eons, he stepped aside and giving her a smile, he walked towards the dining area to prepare the table. She let the breath she was holding out in a whoosh. Gulping hard, she moved away a bit to hide her flushed face.

Raghu set the table and Antara finished making the dinner'. They both sat down at the cozy setting with a candle light and a glass of wine. Antara wrinkled her nose when she saw the red liquid in her glass. Raghu smiled at her and urged her to drink. She gave a weak smile and took a sip and began to smile widely. "This is grape juice"

"Yes, I don't drink wine either" He nodded beaming from ear to ear.

"What do you mean you don't drink either? How do you know I don't?"

"I heard you shouting at your boyfriend near the elevator the other day. He drinks a lot don't he?" Raghu asked cautiously. He doesn't want to scare her with such personal questions but he knew that she needs to talk. He has seen enough of heartbreaks when he grew up with his sisters and knew how to deal with a situation like it. He did not know why or how. But he felt like that she needs him.

"He's not my boyfriend" Antara's jaw hardened. "He's just an ass of a colleague who calls himself my boyfriend"

"Don't blame him" Raghu muttered under his breath and Antara's brows rose at that. Raghu just shrugged and resumed his dinner.

They remained silent for several minutes. Neither of them had anything to say to each other. Occasionally, Raghu would complement on the sandwich but that was it and Antara did not have anything else to say. It's weird that when they don't fight they don't have anything else to talk about.

Finally the dinner was over, Antara was about to get up when Raghu stopped her and told her to enjoy her drink while he washed the dishes. Antara was impressed with his gentlemanly manners. She got up and strolled towards the balcony which gave a beautiful view to the city. Antara looked back and saw that his idea of cleaning the dishes was putting everything in the dishwasher. "men" Antara muttered amused.

Raghu walked up to her and leaned to the side of the railing. "Beautiful isn't it?"

"yes, you are lucky you got this side of the building. All I get to see is a dusty old building. Your apartment is also nice, I did not notice it before, it has got a homely feeling to it"

"well, I'm an art dealer and I know a bit of interior designing too" He replied feeling proud of himself.

"Aah that make sense"

Raghu smiled at that and again they lapsed into silence. Finally after several moments, Antara turned to leave.

"You are wearing a sari" Raghu said all of a sudden. He felt like biting his tongue the moment he said it. All this time, he never thought to ask that.

"Yes, i had a party to go tonight. Got cancelled" she replied in a low voice. She was not going to tell Raghu of all the people that she has been humiliated in front of her entire work mates.

"is that why you were crying?"

Antara's head snapped up at that. She knew he heard her crying. but did not thought that he would ask about it. "no, its not that, I don't care about that" she replied. She felt tears threaten her eyes as she recalled her mother's words at the end. she did not know how but all of a sudden, she felt a hand touch her shoulders and she was guided towards the sofa. Raghu moved away to a decent distance but remained beside her. all of a sudden, the words just came stumbling out of her.

"My parents are getting a divorce. My mom said that dad is leaving us and its all because of me" she began to cry then. "she blame me because ever since I moved out, they have been fighting over petty issues. She told me that had I been there, dad would not have gone seeking solace in another woman. She blames me raghu, she blames me" her voice broke and she could not go on.

Raghu did not know what else to do, he moved close to her and held her hands while her tears fell into them in succession. He applied gentle pressure on it and when he did so, she moved and rested her head on his shoulders. Raghu sat stiff while she cried. Handling a distraught woman was not new to him. God knows he had done enough with his three sisters. But with her, everything seems different. His mind has gone totally blank and did not know what to do with her. He hesitated a bit before wrapping his hands around her shoulders. She moved closer to him and buried her face in his shirt soaking it with her tears and he let her.

Raghu felt antara's body sag and she began to feel heavy in his arms. he realized that she has fallen asleep and wanted to wake her but did not had the heart to. he sat very still unsure whether he should move or not. His arms began to grow tired and he leaned back taking her with her and resting his head the couch, he closed his eyes.

Antara opened her eyes as she heard rhythmic thuds' below her ear. She tried to stop it by putting her hands on whatever it was. She felt that it was smooth, firm and soft to touch. She stiffened and her eyes opened wide as she realized where she was.

She was draped over Raghu in the most intimate way. her hair has come loose and her pallu has slipped off from her shoulder making her semi naked. She stared at Raghu thinking if he might have done it and was ready to blast his ears off. But he was sleeping. His head was turned to a side which looks painful and was snoring softly. his arms were loosely draped around her. She realized that it was she who has clutched him tight. Antara felt embarrassed thinking what he would be thinking of her now. She hoped that he don't think her loose.

Raghu stirred as he felt her shift. He opened his eyes and saw that she was carefully avoiding him and was moving away slowly. He didn't stop her and let her move away.

"Hey" his voice was groggy. He cleared his throat and turned to look outside. The sun was already up. And he felt as if they had slept throughout the day. But it was still 6 a.m.

"I'm sorry -"

"I'm sorry-"they both began. They grinned at each other and Raghu nodded his head for her to speak.

"I'm sorry about last night, we are strangers still don't know what came over me"

"Don't be, besides we are not strangers" He shook his head but when Antara's eyebrows rose he added. "I mean, we are not strangers strangers. We do know each other, you know what I mean?"

Antara smiled. "yes, but still, I'm sorry"

"Don't be, I know how painful it is when you go through such situations"

"Your parents too?"

"No" He shook his head. "sisters"

Antara nodded her head in understatement. "You should see how they are, sometimes they are like a dam ready to burst and next we know is their is heart is made of Birla Cement, never understood the female lot"

Antara laughed at his words. Raghu gave a sigh of relief hearing her so. He felt as if a weight has been lifted off his chest. They looked at each other for a moment when his phone began to buzz. Antara tucked a strand of hair behind her ear and smiled shyly before turning back to her apartments. He smelled a whiff of strawberry as she passed.

Raghu stared at her back with his mouth hanging open. Not because she smiled at him in a shy manner but because her whole back was exposed. Her dori has come undone and even though her hair was long, it didn't hide her entire back.

"Miss Kaul!" He called. She turned. Raghu opened his mouth to tell her about her dress but he did not know why, nothing came out. Instead he said. "I like strawberries"

Antara stared at him in confusion and then replied. "That's good to know, I like strawberries too" saying so, she turned back once again and lifting the curtains, she disappeared into her apartments.

Raghu stood still unable to move nor speak. He closed his eyes at his stupidity. "Strawberries? Really? Why on earth did I say I like strawberries?" he smacked his head and turned to pick up his phone which was buzzing ever since.

"What?!" he barked. He listened to the caller for a moment and then turned towards the sound of Antara's footsteps.. He had the sudden urge to see her once again like the night before. He smiled and said "No. No need to put the wall back up so quickly, take your time"

Back at Antara's apartments, Antara stood by her dressing table removing her earrings when she heard him. She didn't know why but it did not anger her. she smiled realized that along with the wall, their enmity has also ended. She knew her life has changed and she is now fully prepared for it. And in a way, she knew, the person behind that curtain will be there for her.

Rukhsaana and Aman stood with their ears pressed to Raghu and Antara's apartments.

"why am I not hearing anything? We have been standing here all night!" Rukhsaana said in frustration.

"Maybe they are still sleeping" Aman said pressing his ears to Raghu's apartment more firmly.

"I just heard them" RUkhsaana rolled her eyes. "Really Aman, why are they not fighting? I'm getting a bit worried here"

"yeah same here, maybe we should wait till they come out?" Aman suggested and Rukhsaana too agreed.

Few hours later, Rukhsaana and Aman opened their door as they heard laughter nearby the elevator. They both poked their heads out and saw Raghu and Antara laughing merrily. Their jaws dropped open as they saw Raghu and Antara smile at each other and stepped into the elevator and the door closed with them looking at each other.

"Looks like the wall between them has finally come down" Aman said with a wide smile forgetting their bet and hinting at their previous relationship.

"Yeah" Rukhsaana replied with a smile matching his own.
