I don't like how Meena bathes him in baby powder and how Vikram kind of looks down upon his own child😔 What they are depicting is still probably the reality in parts of India. Southern states have a darker population overall and skin color does not matter as much as it does up in central and northern India. Uma has said it all. I also believe that a male child is still preferred over a fair baby girl. But is is advantageous for a girl to be fair skinned overall. Having said that, there has been a welcoming trend in the recent times with darker skinned actors and actresses making it really big in bollywood, fashion world and on tv. The concept of beauty is slowly evolving. Propective grooms themselves do not care as much about skin color if the girl is attractive and has other desirable qualities. Among the educated middle class, girls with higher education and better career prospects are more sought after than the ones with just the fair skin.

In dabh alone, I find our darker SurYa way more attractive than the fairer ViNa, MoMli or Chavi.😃 I think most dabhians would agree with me.

@bold: Exactly Deebz. The poor baby is cute enough as it is...and they're always drowning him in baby powder. 😕 That does reflect their underlying disappointment in his being dark.
Actually this idea that fair is better...I personally feel is the remaining scar of having once been occupied people. Gore chale gaye... but people have not stopped believing that white is superior.
Yes fashion and entertainment industry has made a dent...but it remains to date just that...a dent.

That is true. But even among the whites, paler blondes with porcelain skins used to be considered prettier than brunettes with medium complexion. Did colonization make them appreciate darker skin and tanning became all the rage? 😆 Or is it because the wealthy could afford beach vacations and having a tan became a sign of being rich? I Need to look that up.😊

Edited - looked it up. Wikipedia says in America, Coco Chanel returning tanned friom a French Riviera vacation started the trend along with folks recognizing the benefits of sun exposure for getting vitamin D.

nice post fathimaji

iam against this colour concept
in fact fair skinned person is more prone to skin diseases
the melanin content in their skin is very less
they are more beauty conscious and tend to look down upon the dark coloured person
whats there in colour you need to have a good heart

I feel RP does not discriminate color or sex of the baby EXCEPT Meena.

She is the one always applying powder to Kanha and I feel Vikram dislikes her obsession regarding fairness and not kanha.

In India all in all it comes down to fairness. I'm from America and who ever is from here would know people are trying to get more darker by tanning. But in India is different. I'm very dark myself and I'm from Punjab/Haryana. You have no idea how much bad I had to listen about my skin color. It was horrible and my friends and family spoke to much that I even wanted to have plastic surgery once. It was just too horrible to describe and I felt awful.

In America we were talking about something and one of my American friends said "well I'm lighter than her" (talking about me) and I felt bad for literally 0.5 seconds before realizing I'm in AMERICA NOT INDIA and what that girl didn't mean it in a bad way at all.She just said it because it related to our conversation and was just comparing something. Here racism is still present somewhere but as far as being beautiful, doesn't matter what color you are. However if an Indian were to say that to me then they would mean it in a bad way. A "putting me down" way because fair skin is considered beautiful compared to dark skin. It is the bitter truth.

If fairness didn't matter, which it shouldn't 😡, then India wouldn't be flooded with fairness creams, soaps, medicines, etc. There wouldn't be advices always coming in about what mask you should wear to get fair or what to eat or do to get fair, etc.

Did anyone used to watch Saat Phere? That explains everything I want to say. It came on Zee Tv and about a beautiful girl who is considered extremely ugly because she is a couple of skin tones darker than the rest of the people. I showed her picture to my American friends and they were like W*F she's pretty and not that dark. I guess the characters wanted milk skin girl.

Sorry about my long useless comment, but this is coming from a girl who has to bear many criticisms due to her skin. And on top of that I'm a girl so for my Dad's side of the family Double Trouble (they are still old generation thinkers).

nice post Fatimaji...I voted No...
But people in my community are obesssed with having a fair skinned baby girl...for boys they dont mind him being dark or fair...double standard!

Regarding Rathi family, I agree with barathi aka...I think all love Kanha as he is, even we saw that Mohit the jerk taking care of him...It's only meena who is unhappy about it...

NO.

all over world it matters, esp in India, its over board.also in industry it matters, actually in south side they will give imp to fair,so they will go for mumbai to pick new heroines except some directors.but i should say, bollywood changed now,

in DABH,vikram actually loves kanha very mush also others too except meena.

if dabh show this issue as social msg.then it will be nice.

😒
Nahi samajh mein aaya. I guess the answer is no because skin color only matters when you're racist 🤓

Waiseee, both meena and vikram are fair skinned but Kanha is dark as hell. Why hasn't anyone thought that meena might has done some badtameezi and you know.. Had woogly with a dark skinned man? 😳
