Great Post UMDU ji. 👏 very informative. ⭐️⭐️
Most of the rituals and its reasons i got to know from ur post as i dont know much abt it. Like Sandhya i also used to ask why? for most of the rituals and i used to get answer like bhabho from my relatives. 😕

@Bold - i was surprised with this fact. At the Same time i got frustrated, why people are not taking these kind of positive facts into practice and following only those which may affect or hurt one' s feelings (like sati, female infanticide, sidelining females, untouchability, etc)

Kudos to CV's for taking steps to create awareness among everyone on these troublesome factors following in the name of auspicious. ⭐️👏👍🏼

Thanks once again UMDU ji for the post.⭐️

Now, How much it's appropriate to show any polymathic forecasting the future??🤪 The Brahmin was predicting absolute future(considering his strong voice)..How illogical it's???😲

Actually this bandwagon set in any indian dramas..😆..I was expecting DABH CV's to enlighten this matter as well but alas Dil ke armaan aasuo main beh gaye..😭

I mean yes it's true one can predict "probable" future not "absolute" one. As we know that too many
energies constantly shift and change and influence the future for anyone to predict what is going to happen at a fixed point in the future.

In Hinduism, People often misinterpret between "sects" and "religion"..😕..If one ask which religion you follow , They'll answer I'm following Vaishanva or use any other sects.😆.

Some strange superstitious people follow in my region:-
1.)We can't cut nails on Saturday.. Why?
2.)We strictly have to wash hair on Saturday.. Why?
3.)People throw coin in the river whenever they passing over river bridge.. Why?
4.)If black cat come across while we for a good task then it will consider as an inauspicious event.. Why?

Anyway, lemme stop my blabbering here. It's never ending quests..😳.

Waise, Umdu Aunty..Sorry to pour out my thoughts here. I'm feeling lazy to create new thread... I'm grateful to you for this post..You know why because to represent my views on Brahmin I opened up Bhagwad Gita after almost 1 month or so.. I used to follow it in my mundane life but don't know why I stopped it.🤔..

Thank you beta. Your post needed a detailed reply and since I was doing some work could not get back to you. First of all you must distinguish between superstition and what is written in the holy texts.Superstitions are practises which without any rational reason people start following. All that you have listed are in that catagory. Our holy texts are also not available in their original form as they were initially transmitted from one generation to another orally. The written version came much later of all of them the Vedas, the Puranas and the Manu Smriti. As a result several versions and interpretations came up. What ever you have asked here is tradition and superstition. The answer to 1 and 2 is not to displease Shani God as Saturday is his day. Throwing coins in rivers was said to bring Godess Lakshmi to your house, other reason was as coins were made with copper and it was considered good for health and river water was the only source of drinking water it was thrown to enrich it.4 pt is something the west Europeans and Chinese also believe.Black cat is a sign of evil, the witches used its ears and eyes to cast a spell so they were considered inauspicious. I personally believe that any superstition which is not rationally justified should not be followed.

@Umdu Aunty:- Thanks a lot for your clarifications.👍🏼 Somehow my doubt is cleared. Regarding to follow superstitions,I don't follow any superstitions no matter how rationally it's justified.😔.

I always end up either learning new things or doubts get cleared through your thought provoking posts.⭐️. You're really a master of all trades.

Great post UMDU and informative and very nice discussion by all.

I completely agree with you all that the customs and rituals followed in all the religions have been followed blindly without knowing their reasons and so misinterpreted by people to satisfy their needs. For example, dowry which may have been started to give daughters their share of property which changed to people demanding/expecting dowry from even those who does not own any property or it has in some way forced the girls parents to save money for their daughters and those who are not able to dread girl child leading to female infanticide and so on.

Nowadays, with education and modern societal changes, these things are diluted so much in cities at least that people do not follow them strictly. Earlier in our community, after a person's death, relatives used to stay till 11 days until all the rituals are fulfilled and now it has been changed and all the rituals have been shortened and finished in 3, 2 or even 1 day based on their willingness.

Superstitions have no logical reasons and may be based on personal experiences which has passed on to others...😆 sometimes when I wear a new saree and if something bad happens, I just do not use that saree again. 😆 Regarding black cats, more than superstition, they are scary.

Great a post with thought provoking⭐️ ideas...!👏

i was slowly reading everything including the each comments...!😳
Ami n JAMi doing great...!!😊
i'm once again " glad to be around!! "😳

Thanks UMDU for such a nice post...!!🤗

back to topics, in my own words...😊

Here in my native kerala, they used to conduct Yagas sometime, like in 12 yrs or so, though I never attended one, i have read about them. and the yaga fire is actually lit in presence of the Main Priests wife only! and in fact during the entire period of the Yaga , like 12 days or so, the wife would be with in the Yaga sala only...! i.e. she is given as importance as the priest!⭐️

if i'm correct the guy should be married to be the main priest of the yaga!😳

# yeah later Vedic period was fall of many ideals,

the best example is that Sri Sankaracharya had to be enlightened by Lord Shiva, by coming in front of him as a Chandala/low cast person to make him realise the EQUALITY among people...

and,
Though the Modern texts/books classify the caste system as a classification based upon the job/talent/etc... i believe it was started as a idea to classify people according to their own intentions/acts etc...

wow!! i loved the point 5!!!👏

regarding marriages, here there was a custom of Bhrahmin guys marrying ladies from other casts, and those ladies were never allowed to enter the spouse house nor have any asset of them. and those ladies were not just one, sometime many!

on the corollary, some families only the 1st male child was allowed to marry a bhrahmin lady/ladies/including other casts, and continue the generation while the other male members were either allowed to shift away and have a new family (which was rare) or marry from other casts.

and the poor thing was, those kids from other casts were never allowed to endow anything from the Bhrahmin family!
the corollary to it, some other casts used this to make their ladies to get married to higher casts with great wealth to grab some of it...!!

yes!!

i would say the society sometime forget the real fact behind the "customs" and go behind "rules" !! which is never been strict in past...!!

One of the most informative posts that I've ever come across in this FORUM ever Umduji!! My respects to you for coming up with this brilliant topic.

Agree to each and every point you made. I remember two very particular female names here-

Gargi Vachknavi and Maitreyi --These are the two female philosophers of very early times and participated in all kind of philosophic talks and debates.I would highly suggest everyone to google these two names and read about them.

Somewhere down the line, ideas got messed up.And the situation of women became what it is right now.As you've mentioned ,the current situation is a result of a series of misinterpretations of earlier literature.

There are some rituals that are followed and have highly significant scientific meanings-There are particular scientific reasons why a name of god must be chanted for a certain number of times using a mala, why it is important for women to wear bindi's and ear-rings,why earlier male brahmins had just a short lenght of hair just at the centre of head and no hair anywhere else(the latter two are associated with strengthining the nerves on forehead, near ear-lobes and at the centre of the head which make nerves in those regions very active). And there are few things which bore meaning at certain point of time but not any longer. Like Men cutting the coconut.Earlier, without much help or right kind of technique, women were considered physically less strong to indulge into activities like these and men usually performed them to help the women. This act has been highly misinterpreted and it is now a rule that during poojas and other occasions, men have to compulsorily break the coconut and not women.

In today's episodes, both Brahmins as well as Bhabo and Meena and others represented the generation of people who never bothered to think what knowledge was being passed onto them was right or wrong. They have digested and learnt any information that was passed onto them.Sandhya on the other hand represents the section who think before blindly following anything that is being said. There is one important thing to notice here.Even Sandhya who personally would never believe in these rituals follows them and sticks to the rules just because Bhabo asks her to.Even while talking to Brahmins ,she talks from a distance just to respect the thoughts of Bhabo and Brahmins. That is a very grave reality.Even those who dont want to believe and practice these rituals blindly are forced to do them just to keep in peace with the older members of the family and respect their thoughts. It's only when Sandhya manages to permanently change Bhabos idea will she also be free to not follow wrong things.

EDIT--My timings doesn't suit me to read all the comments that have been made till now,I just read the first post and typed down what I felt.I am sorry if I have re-written anything that has been already posted
