| Part Two|
“Mrs. Shergill,” was all that he could whisper, on finding himself running aimlessly in the forest. It almost happened in a blink of eye that she rushed towards him, grabbed his wrist and pulled him along with her.
“I think they saw us,” she muttered, darting a quick glance behind her back and was relieved to see that there was nobody following them, not at least until then.
“But who are they?” He popped the obvious question, but that seemingly irked her.
“Not my relatives, for sure,” she gave him his answer, gritting through her teeth. “What kind of questions are you even asking? At least have some consideration of the time and situation we are in.”
He halted his steps hearing her, making her stop along. “My questions are pretty much valid, Mrs. Shergill and what situation are you talking about here? Do you even know what the situation is? I did not tell you about Vinay’s message yet, did I?”
“Vinay’s message?” she mouthed but saved it for later and squeezed his hand. “Let’s talk later. We cannot stop now.”
“But where are we going?” He resumed going far from where they were, but his questions did not stop.
She exhaled her breath, keeping her focus on the ground. “I don’t know. By the way, what were you saying about Vinay’s message?”
He sighed. “It said this is a trap and asked to leave the place immediately.”
Now, it was she who stilled her feet, standing unmoved. Turning her head at him, she stared at him in absolute amusement that slowly grew into anger. “Did I not say the very same thing? But no, my win was accidental and coincidental, right Mr. Shergill?”
Her gaze was intimidating in that moment. He gulped, taking in the daggers she was throwing at him. “You said we cannot stop. Come on,” he pushed his hand and hers in his to the front, “We can argue on who’s right, and who is wrong later.” So much to escape his wife’s about to erupt volcano, he breathed out in relief to see situation striking her mind and she let go of it all, resuming the run again.
“Alright, stop, I can’t run more.” He firmed his grip on her hand, rooting his feet. Leaving her hand, he bent down pressing his palms on his knees, gasping for breath. He went in absolute amusement when he straightened himself, seeing his wife standing there all well and good. Her breathing was labored but she did not seem as tired as he was. He was indeed impressed. “You have quite stamina, I must say.”
She lifted her shoulders as an expression of proud. “Of course, I do. Yoga karti hu mai. Aap bhi kiya kijiye. Ye sirf acchi body banane se kuch nahi hota.”
His lips curved in a smirk. “Did you just mean that I do have a good body?”
Her forehead stretched in annoyance. “When did I say that? Stop taking the meaning of my words as per your desires, Mr. Shergill.”
“Yeah right,” he muttered, rolling his eyes.
She ignored it, taking strides to introspect the surrounding. “Oh god.” She slapped her forehead, realizing they were deep in woods. She turned to him. “Ham fas gaye, Mr. Shergill. Ab kya kare?”
He raised a brow, not letting his calm get affected even a bit. “Why’re you asking me, Mrs. Shergill? Last I checked, it was you who brought us here, I didn’t.”
She couldn’t believe, he was still pointing at her for doing that. “How ungrateful a person can be! Had I not brought us here, we would have been dead by now.”
“Dead? Really, Mrs. Shergill? We don’t even know who they exactly are and what are they up to. Sure, I accept that they are frauds, but at most what will they want? No points for guessing. Money. And killing us won’t let him have it. So of course, we would not have been dead.”
She held his gaze for a moment or two with her narrowed eyes, before she moved a step back from him, shifting her glances all over but at him. “It’s useless talking to you,” she mouthed.
“What?”
“I said, it is useless talking to you, Mr. Shergill.” The oh so disappointing truth. Why could he ever not listen to her without hearing the valid explanations? It had been quite a while since he knew her. Did he still feel that her decisions needed to be questioned, cross checked and recalculated?
“Yeah, right, of course. It is useful to talk to only Shikhar, isn’t it?”
She passed him a ridiculous look. Was he serious? He was still stuck there? At times, she couldn’t help wondering why exactly he disliked her and Shikhar together to this extent. She remembered him confessing during Holi event. She had those blur flashes. Once she ended up thinking that it was jealousy that made him annoyed every time he saw her with Shikhar but then again, Mr. Shergill did not seem like the one who’d get jealous.
“Jealousy is good only when it is in limit, Mr. Shergill.” She decided to tease him anyway.
“Jealous and me? To see you and Shikhar? What a joke!” Did she really think that he would ever accept it in front of her?
“Shh.” She jumped towards him, keeping her finger on her lips asking him to not make a sound. “Can you hear it? I think they are around.” She was the first one to be alerted due to the footsteps of people when he was lost in the uneasy thoughts of his wife being more comfortable with his brother than him. Perhaps she was too attentive to everything in the surrounding owing the precognition flashing before her eyes over and over.
He gave her a quick nod.
“Mrs. Shergill,” he grabbed her wrist, turning her around in the direction where his eyes were, “I think that is our only option right now.”
