Thanks for posting this part. 😊
This part of the story doesn't mention anything about him consumating with her. So everyone, please don't get any wrong ideas.
Mahananda was a devotee. A soul, who is eager to unite with her Aaradhya. Here please don't misunderstand it as a physical union. He is devoted to Parvati only.
This is a story of how a Jeeva unites with Shiva. An Aatma's union with Paramatma. Here soul is neither male nor female. Paramatma is form of pure energy. That's why when the Shivling is thrown in fire it indicated her to purify herself. She did so by jumping in the fire & our param kripalu Shivji granted her freedom.
Shivji gave her an opportunity, wanted to test her how far she can go to protect symbol of her Aaradhya & Mahananda passed that test.

Reshma, many things are added later in Puranas. What we are reading is translated version, where someone must have interpreted their Spiritual union as physical consumation. But Shivji has proved again & again he is loyal to Parvati only.
He is Lord Shiva not Indra, who can commit crime to achieve his motive.
