Daitya

When Hiranaksha was killed, Diti was deeply grieved and Nirhad Daitya, the maternal uncle of Prahlada, decided that the root cause of all the tribulations for the Daityas were Vedas and Mantras. As Brahmanas were the performers of Yagnas and the Vedic Rites, the Demon took the form of a tiger in a forest nearby and during the course of a Yagna at Kasi which is the Center of Vedic activities, he used to kill as many Brahmanas as possible in the nights and after the success of this experiment, more Daityas followed suit. But, when several Brahmanas assembled worshipping a Siva Linga on a Sivaratri, a tiger appeared and Lord Himself gave a powerful blow and terminated the Daitya in the form of another tiger.

Some more:
  • Andhaka - son of Shiva, created when Parvati blindfolds Shiva w/ her hands, making him sweat. Those drops become a blind asura, since Shiva is 'blind' at the time of its creation.
  • Adiasura - the asura who masqueraded as Parvati, and caused a battle b/w Shiva & the real Parvati
  • Nandi once taking the form of Parvati for some reason (I forget why at the moment)
  • Bhimasura - son of Kumbhakarna & Karkati - killed by Shiva when he tried to harm his bhakts
And as others have mentioned, stories like Ayappa and so on. I doubt they'll show Banasura, unless they distort it, since in that story, Mahadev loses a battle to Krishna, even though that's due to his own curse to Banasura that he would be defeated by one who's equal to Mahadev in war. Since Shiva had vowed to fight alongside Banasura in any of his wars, he too had to be a part of that defeat.

I think that ultimately, they'll cover all these stories. One of the most famous ones they're yet to cover would be Arjun vs Kirata, which was the guise Shiva took to approach Arjun in response to the latter's tapasya for divyastras.

Gajasura

Lord Brahma narrated the tale of Gajasura too to Narada Muni. As Durga Devi destroyed Mahishasura, his son Gajasura did incredible penance to the Creator Brahma and received the advantage that none excepting a 'Jitendriya' (Controller of Senses) could kill him. He took advantage of the boon and created havoc in the Three Worlds, especially by distressing Deities, Maharshis, and Brahmanas. He coerced that he should be worshipped and none else. The climax came when the Demon forced the devotees at Kasi to worship him and Maha Deva appeared and terminated Gajasura. While being killed the Demon realised his sins and as a death wish entreated Siva to wear his skin on His body. As He obliged the asura, Maha Deva is praised as Gajambaradhari. The Lord ordered that at the spot of the Demon's end there must be a Siva Linga with His manifestation as Krittiveseshvar.

Andhakasura

Lord Brahma also narrated the account of another Demon Andhakasura to Narada. When Devi Parvati was playful with Maha Deva by closing His eyes tightly, the latter perspired on His forehead and a boy of muscular strength was created whom Parvati named as Andhaka. She nurtured the boy with affection under Her personal care. As the Demon Hiranyaksha meditated for several years to seek longevity and unconquerability, Lord Siva gave the boons and also gifted Andhaka to assist the Demon as his son. Together, both Hiranaksha and Andhaka conquered the Three Worlds- the Heaven, Earth and the Nether world. Lord Vishnu had to take the form of a Boar as 'Varahavatara' to save Vedas by plunging the Scriptures into the deep Seas, destroyed Hiranyaksha and crowned Andhaka as a the King of the Nether World. In course of time, Andhaka made Tapasya to Brahma and secured a boon that none excepting his father Siva could destroy him. Empowered with the boon, he tormented Devas and became arrogant even ignoring Devi Parvati and Maha Deva Himself, let alone Vedas and Sages.

Earlier to this, Danava Guru, Sukracharya noticed that the strength of Danava Army was fast dwindling as each time a powerful Danava made attempts to occupy the Indraloka by virtue of severe 'Tapasya'or Sacrifice by pleasing Brahma or Siva, Indra and Vishnu commenced maneuverings; in the process of the big Danavas getting killed, thousands of supporting and less powerful Danavas perished, but the strength of Devas on the other hand had been intact as they had the advantage of 'Amrit' that made Devas live for ever! Therefore Sukracharya made exterme Tapasya to Lord Siva for thousand years to Lord Siva to give the boon of 'Mrita Sanjivani' Mantra (Providing the dead to come alive) to such lesser valued demons who were fodder to the Deva's Astras. Highly gladdened by the persistent penance, Lord Siva not only gave away the Mantra but also provided a berth in the Planetary Region as an Entity-the Sukra Graha or the Planet of Venus. As Andhaka's arrogance was turned into unbridled ambition and occupied the Devalokas, Maha Deva sent His Sivaganas to reprimand Andhaka. The Demon's companion called Vidhas swallowed several Deities engaged in the fight and simultaneously Sukracharya brought back to life the dead Danavas. A fiery Siva Himself appeared and devoured Sukracharya for the betrayal and misuse of His boon of Mrita Sanjivini Vidya. The Danava Guru who kept on reciting Om Namah Sivaya Mantra as a gesture of his regret, Siva released the Danava Guru from His semen. Then Siva applied His Trident to kill Andhaka but for each drop of blood, there was another Andhaka born; Maha Deva ordered Devi Chandika to suck each drop of blood and expanded her tongue for till the Demon's body was drenched out of blood. Later on Siva lifted the bloodless body of Andhaka, but the Demon prayed to Siva to admit him among the Sivaganas after death.

Shiva and Parvati

A story about the relationship between Shiva and his wife Parvati.

Aimee Ginsburg
8/16/2008 12:00:00 AM

One evening, as the flames had calmed and the room was filled with a lovely afterglow, Shiva ran his fingers through his wife Parvati's long hair, black as the night which was overtaking the light, kissed her eyebrow, and settled down contentedly on their double tiger fur rug.

"My darling," he said, in that universal language in which they spoke to each other, "I have decided that tonight I am going to tell you the secret of immortality. Listen up my dear, I have never given away this secret before, and surely never will again. This is the deepest secret of existence, the actual answer to the Mystery, and it is not supposed to be spoken, ever. But," now he might have laid his arm on her smooth and curvy saffron belly, "I love you, you are my other half. I don't want to lose you anymore, so listen up."

(This last bit might not have been actually said, Shiva being who he is, a God, yes, but a very manly one; probably not all that great with talking about his feelings. He had others ways to show what he feels - like that time he was so upset he caused winter to come upon the world for several eons. But, we digress.)

And then Shiva, lord of the universe, put his blue arm under his dread locked head, pushed the cobra that lived around his neck a bit to the side, took a small puff on his peace pipe, his chillum filled with lovely himalayan weed and began to talk.

And he talked, and he talked. It was the most mystically electrifying talk that had ever been given in the history of all times. Every detail of the workings of reality, Immortality For Dummies, and for Geniuses as well. As he talked, he closed his eyes to the narrowest slits and let all of his vast knowledge spill out, spiraling and dancing like the smoke of his pipe, all of it a love offering to his beloved.

Oh, Parvati must of been so thrilled, so honored, and mostly, so relieved to finally have the low down on this immortality thing because frankly, she was in a bit of a jam.

Parvati was immortal anyway, of course, every bit as much as her other half Shiva, as neither could exist with out the other, it was because of them that there is in and out, black and white, on and off. But, she had this horrible habit, and as hard as she tried she could not break it.

She got involved with life. She really cared about the story she had made up with her husband, this story called MahaMaya in Sanskrit meaning grand illusion of existence.

She loved all of it, she was angry and jealous and afraid and prideful sometimes, tender and passionate, she had FEELINGS. And these feelings had her coming and going, forgetting the truth, forgetting who she really was. On the merry-go-round, just like the simple mortals, her creations. Her involvement and her emotions tired her out, and in the night time, after perfect love with her beloved, frankly, sorry, the last thing on her mind was to listen to a lecture on Metaphysical Reality. So, actually,

she fell asleep quite soon, she wasn't listening at all.

Do you think Shiva noticed that she wasn't even listening? You are right!

Actually, he even thought he had proof that she was listening, for wasn't she constantly saying "hoo, hoo" in agreement and enjoyment as he went on through the night? He was sure it was her. Hundreds of billions of years they are together, and he did not realize that the reassuring "hoo, hoo" was not coming from his wife.

And when first light came, he saw that she was sleeping in perfect peace. But on the window sill sat a pigeon, who had been listening intently to every word. The secret in the wrong claws! Shiva became furious, something rare for this god who could sit in meditation, easily, for 250,000 years.

He lunged at the poor pigeon, who went flying away, both chaser and chase forgetting completely that they had spent all night understanding immortality, remembering that there was never anything to fear. Quickly flew the bird, quickly chased the beautiful blue god, and after some time the bird, seeing a holy woman with her mouth wide open, flew right inside, and down into her belly.

"Come out now so I can kill you!" Shiva demanded, his ash smeared body shaking with the insult, his cobras slithering through his dread locks.

"Um, I think I'll just stay in here, if ya don't mind," mumbled the shaken bird.

"Well," said Shiva, puffing up his chest, "I'm not going anywhere till you come out, you rascal, you stole that knowledge and I want it back." So, plunking himself down outside the gate, standing his trident in the ground next to him, he sat down to wait.

And he waited. And twelve years passed, and still the bird would not come out.

Meanwhile, back at home, Parvati wasn't having such an easy go of it. Although used to Shiva's long absences, she never liked it very much. She wanted her husband back, if only to thrash him, verbally at least, for going away for so long. So she waited, and after twelve years she finally had had enough and she called her brothers in law, Brahma and Vishnu, to get their brother back.

When they went to him and saw him sitting there, like a drama king, they did not know if to laugh or to worry. "Have you gone out of you mind?" they asked him, and at that moment he came to his senses, and danced a dance of ecstasy, and told the bird to come out and be who he already was anyway - free, and immortal, like every other speck of creation in the universe.

So the bird was born as a boy (still no one mentions the holy women, pregnant for 12 years, giving birth to a grown boy.) The boy went on to become one of India's wisest men and wrote books on mysticism which are considered classics to this day.

And Shiva danced, until that moment that he remembered Parvati. His blue color must have turned to indigo as he murmured "holy me!" and rushed home to try and make amends. And he did, but this is where our curtain comes down.

Shiva Insults his Wife

There was an asura who wanted to become immortal, so he prayed and meditated
for many, many years. Finally Brahma appeared before him to grant him a boon,
and the asura asked for the boon of Immortality.
Brahma said, ..I cannot grant you that boon, but at least this much I can
do for you: you will not be able to be killed by any male.?

The asura was very happy because he would now become the strongest and most
powerful of all the great fighters. He immediately invaded Heaven and threw
Indra out. Then he began destroying Heaven and expelling all the cosmic gods
one by one.

The cosmic gods hurried to Brahma and pleaded, ?What have you done, what
have you done, my Lord? Now you have to save us!?

Brahma said, ?I am the culprit. I granted the boon, but now I do not have
the power to protect you. I have to go to Shiva. Only he can save you from
this predicament. Let me go and ask Shiva what can be done.?

So Brahma went to Shiva and explained the whole situation to him. He said,
?I gave this asura the boon of becoming invincible. Now he has thrown Indra
and all the other cosmic gods out of Heaven. There is only one way he can
be defeated, and that is by a female. Can you not provide a very powerful
female to kill this asura??

Shiva thought for a few moments. ?It is a very difficult task,? he said at
last, ?but I will try my best. I will see what I can do for you.

While Shiva was wondering how to solve this problem, Parvati happened to
walk by. Now, Parvati was extremely beautiful and her complexion was very
fair. All of a sudden, for some unknown reason, Shiva addressed her as .Kali.?
As soon as Parvati heard her husband calling her Kali, she got furious.

Why are you calling me by that name?? she screamed. ?You married me because
I was so beautiful. Now why are you casting a slur on me? Have I become dark?
Am I no longer beautiful? I am so disgusted with you! Who asked you to marry
me? I am not going to stay with you. If you think that I am dark-skinned,
I will leave this instant!...

Shiva made no attempt to retract his words, and so Parvati left him and entered
into the forest. She began praying and meditating and practicing very strict
spiritual austerities. One day a tiger came near her as she sat meditating.
It wanted to kill and devour her. Upon seeing the tiger, Parvati thought,
How kind this tiger is! I am meditating here all alone and it has come to
protect me.? She entered into the soul of the tiger and, out of sheer gratitude
and love, removed all the tiger?s ferocious qualities. The tiger remained
by her side and became her most favourite devotee.

Parvati continued meditating on Brahma. At long last he came to see her.
He said, ..I am so pleased with you. Now what can I do for you??
I wish to have a better complexion,? said Parvati. ?Shiva has called me
Kali. What an insult! That means my skin is no longer beautiful. I cannot
bear to be called dark. I want to be more beautiful.?
?All right,? said Brahma, ?I will grant you this boon. From the cells of
your body a dark being will come out. It will be quite black. When your body
is rid of this being, you will become beautiful, more beautiful, most beautiful.
From now on you will be known as Gauri, she who has the most beautiful complexion.

Immediately, a very dark and very powerful being came out of the cells of
Parvati?s body. It took the form of a female and Brahma endowed it with all
kinds of spiritual and occult powers. This being fought against the asura
and defeated it. Then Indra and all the other cosmic gods went back to Heaven
and lived again in perfect joy. Meanwhile, Parvati returned to Shiva and
they were very happy together once again.

Shiva Leaves Parvati Behind

One day Shiva wanted to go and visit Mount Mandara. He was in a terrible
rush, but Parvati was not ready. Finally Shiva decided to leave without her.
Some apsaras and gandharvas, or celestial musicians, followed him.
When they reached the destination, Shiva began to feel sorry that he had
not waited for Parvati to accompany him. So he sent Nandi back to bring Parvati.Meanwhile, Parvati was sulking. How could Shiva go without her..When Nandi
arrived, she said to him, You have come to get me, but I am still not ready
and I do not know when I will be ready. You can go and tell Shiva that I
am not ready.. Parvati was very sad and depressed.
Nandi went to inform Shiva that Parvati was still not ready. This time Shiva
told him, .Nandi, go back and wait for her. No matter how long it takes,
wait for her. You have to bring her here.
Nandi returned to Parvati again and waited and waited for her to finish getting
ready. In the meantime, some apsaras and gandharvas wanted to fool Lord Shiva.
The apsaras were the main instigators. One of them took the form of Parvati
and one of the gandharvas took the form of Nandi. They looked exactly like
the real Parvati and the real Nandi.
This particular apsara and gandharva appeared before Lord Shiva. The false
Nandi said, I have brought Parvati,? and the false Parvati added, ?Yes,
my Lord, I have come.? Shiva was very, very happy. He thought they were the
real Parvati and Nandi.
O God, in a few minutes? time, the real Parvati and the real Nandi arrived,
and there was great confusion. The second Parvati insisted that she was the
real one and the first Parvati insisted that she was the real one. A fight
broke out between the two sides, but the real Parvati and the real Nandi
easily defeated the false ones.
Then Lord Shiva, with his infinite compassion, forgave the false Parvati
and the false Nandi.

The Unparalleled Beauty of the Goddess Parvati

Once the goddess Parvati wanted to become beautiful, more beautiful, most
beautiful. She was already quite beautiful, but her present beauty did not
satisfy her. She wanted to become beauty nonpareil.
Parvati knew that this kind of beauty could be acquired only by virtue of
intense prayer and meditation. She decided to leave her husband, Shiva, and
go into seclusion so that she could practice spiritual disciplines without
interruption.
Before leaving, she asked Nandi not to allow any woman who looked like her
to enter Lord Shiva's place. She said, Many times my Lord has been deceived
by women who take my form and try to approach him. You have to be absolutely
sure that it is I who have returned, and nobody else. Otherwise, I am sure
that in my absence some women will try to fool you.
After issuing her strict instructions, Parvati withdrew into the forest for
an indefinite length of time. All her jewellery and lovely garments she left
behind so that she could give her full attention to prayer and meditation.
A few months later, an asura or demon, who happened to pass by Shiva?s place,
noticed the gigantic gates outside it. The demon asked one of the guards,
Whose place is this.
It is Lord Shiva's place, the guard replied.
I would like to be admitted, said the demon haughtily.
It is absolutely forbidden, said the guard. I have received special instructions
from Parvati and nobody may be admitted.
Outwardly the demon pretended to be detached. ?All right,? he said, ?if you
do not allow people to enter, what can I do?
Inwardly he was seething with rage. He went home and came back to the gate
a few days later. This time he took the form of a tiny creature. It was something
like a snake. Because this creature was so tiny, it was able to pass through
the gate unnoticed by the guards. It was almost invisible to the eye. Once
it was inside Shiva's home, the creature assumed the form of Parvati. She
was beautiful beyond description.
When Shiva saw his wife standing before him, he was filled with joy. He came
forward to embrace her but, as he put his arms around the false Parvati,
the demon suddenly resumed its old form. The demon attacked Shiva and a terrible
fight took place.
Eventually Shiva gained the upper hand and the demon lay dying on the ground.
With his last breath, the demon said to Shiva, You have killed me, but I
am warning you. One day my brother will come and kill you. He will take Parvati's
form and kill you. He is much stronger than I am.?
It was well known that this demon did not have a brother. His threat was
all lies. He wanted Shiva to destroy the real Parvati when she returned from
the forest.
The problem of the false Parvatis went on for many, many years. Just as Parvati
had foreseen other beings took her form and tried to fool the guards. Sometimes
the guards refused to admit them and, at other times, when they were able
to enter successfully, Shiva recognized them. Shiva did not want to be fooled
a second time.
After a long time, one Parvati came and requested admittance. She behaved
so much like the real Parvati that the guards opened the gate. She entered
and started walking towards Shiva. Shiva immediately suspected her. O God,
he sighed, another one has come to fool me.
Shiva prepared to defend himself once again. This time, from his body, countless
beings emerged to destroy the false Parvati. But to Shiva's great surprise,
countless beings also emerged from the body of this particular Parvati. A
huge battle raged between the two sides.
As Shiva gazed at the many beings who were fighting for Parvati, he realized
that only the real Parvati could have this kind of spiritual power.
You are my real Parvati!? he cried, throwing down his weapons. Shiva advanced
towards her. As he came nearer, he noticed that his wife was now much, much
more beautiful than she had been previously. Because she had prayed and meditated
for so many years, she had become beauty unparalleled.

it will be the concluding story if anyone wants

Shiva Provides a Home for Parvati

Lord Shiva and Parvati lived at the top of the Himalayas. Sometimes they stayed on Mount Kailash and sometimes they stayed on another mountain named Mandara. One day Parvati said to her consort, 'My Lord, everybody has a house. Can we not also have a house? When the weather is hot here on the top of the mountain, I suffer so much. You are in your trance, but I cannot enjoy trance as you do, so I suffer unbearably. Please give me a house to live in.'

Shiva was in his own world, and he paid no attention to his wife's request. A few years passed by and Parvati brought up the matter once more. 'My Lord, please let us have a house,' she begged.

'I am so poor,' Shiva replied. 'How can I give you a house? Let us go and take up our abode at the foot of a tree. There you will find shade. The tree will protect us.'

'Yes,' said Parvati, 'a tree can give us shade and shelter to some extent. But when it rains heavily, what can a tree do? When there are hurricanes or cyclones or monsoons, what will happen? The rain will come and destroy every-thing.'

'I am very, very poor. What can I do?' answered Shiva.

'Indeed, you are poor!' responded his wife. 'But you have made so many people rich. How is it that you have made others rich while you yourself have remained poor? They are lucky. They can get anything they want from you because they are your devotees. But when I want to have something for myself, you refuse me ' and I am your wife!' Parvati started weeping pitifully. Then she continued, 'I beg you, my Lord, please provide us with a house. Otherwise, I cannot escape from the rain. I can tolerate the heat but not the rain.'

Shiva's heart melted. He said to his wife, 'Because I am so poor, I cannot give you a proper house. But since I have prayed and meditated for so many years, I can do you this favour. Let us change our abode. Let us move away from this tree on the mountaintop. We shall no longer stay on Kailash or Mandara. We shall enter into the clouds. From now on, the clouds will be our home. We shall remain inside them and we will not be on earth at all. We will not touch the ground. Therefore the rain will not affect us; nothing will affect us.'

So Shiva and Parvati entered into the clouds to live. One name of Shiva is Jimutabahin, meaning 'one who is inside the cloud.' Lord Shiva and Parvati still live inside the clouds because Shiva could not afford to have a house.
