Vrish,

It's not mentioned in Shiv Puran that he is aware of his origin, but he must have been told by someone that he is Shivansh, that's why he is so powerful.

Tulsi in her former birth was Vrinda, the faithful wife of the demon Jalandhar. She was exceptionally beautiful, maintained her dharma and was always the perfect wife to her husband. Jalandhar was so named because of being born in water (jala). He initially ruled over the oceans as he was born from the sweat which Shiva had thrown from his brow into the ocean when he perspired after being insulted by Lord Indra. This caused him to demand the fourteen treasures churned out from the ocean by Indra as part of his heritage. As was Indra's nature he did not oblige. To avenge Indra, Jalandhar worshipped Brahma and underwent extraordinary penance. In delight Brahma granted him the boon that he would remain free from death as long as his wife remained virtuous and chaste.

Vrinda was renowned for her faithfulness and chastity. Jalandhar began to conquer all. He became extremely egocentric, thinking he was unbeatable, because of the strength of his wife's devotion to him. So much so he waged war on Indra and Swarga [home of all the dev-gods]. The Gods fled to the protection of Shiva and Vishnu, but this was to no avail. Jalandhar had become invincible in the three worlds because of the devotion of his wife Vrinda. Vishnu and Shiva soon realised that the only way to defeat Jalandhar was to break the loyalty of Vrinda.

They deceived Vrinda by telling her that her husband had been killed in battle. They produced Jalandhar's severed head and body. She thought her husband was dead and went into grief. In answer to her prayers bringing the severed body back to life Vishnu appeared before Vrinda as Jalandhar. Vrinda was deceived into thinking that it was her resuscitated husband, so she embraced him. Realising her mistake; she lost her virtue by touching another man: after which Jalandhar died in battle.

Upon discovering the identity and the horrible trick he had committed Vrinda cursed Vishnu, stating that he would become a black stone, Shaligram - the ammonite stone found mainly in the river Gandaki. In turn she too was cursed into becoming the Tulsi plant, her hair became the plant Tulsi used in the pooja to Gods; as a symbol of devotion. Vishnu won over by Vrinda's unimpeachable chastity vowed to marry her every year, from therein. This has been immortalised by devotees performing their marriage annually on this holy day.

When Tulsi died, Vishnu sat gloomily with her ashes, still admiring her. The devatas then approached Yogmaya to address the problem and bring some cheer and normalcy to Vishnu. She gave the devatas three seeds and asked them to sow the seeds where Vishnu was seated. Three plants grew from them -- Malti, Aanwla and Tulsi. While Aanwla and Tulsi are used for the worship of Vishnu, Malti is prohibited. The curse of Tulsi and Vishnu had taken effect Vishnu is worshipped in the form of a stone (Shaligram) and the great, chaste Tulsi has become the plant vrinda (tulsi) with remarkable qualities. The worship of Vishnu is not complete without Tulsi leaves. Tulsi has been given the greatest honour as Vishnu, in the avatar of Krishna, played and frolicked in Vrindavan.

Puja is offered in all pious houses by watering the plant in the morning and lighting a diya in the evening. Tulsi Vivah is celebrated on the Kartik Shukla dwadashi. While Jalandhar is remembered as a daitya, Tulsi attained immortality.

Vrinda, Jalandhara's wife, was supposedly one of the most beautiful women in the entire universe. Vrinda was also a devotee of Lord Vishnu and Shiva. Demon Jalandhara was proud of his wife's beauty and was glad that the world envied the fact. Vrinda, on the other hand, was humble and considered Goddess Parvati as the most beautiful one.

Its funny how people have been criticizing Vishnu for his behaviour with Vrinda.
The fault clearly lies in Vrinda alone. Its good to be devoted to your husband but
is it really worth it to be devoted to a man who is evil and lusting after somebodys else wife.

God I am amused to see ur pov .. d point is she was trustworthy to her love n to her husband .. n she has all d r8 to decide if she will be trustworthy towards him or not .. unless a husband become tyrant towards his wife a wife's trustworthiness is a thing to be praised not to be bashed .. wives r called ARDHANGINI .. I guess for being moral support of her husband .. I used to respect Vishnu a lot but what he has done to Vrinda just taking toll on my respect .. it was all his fault .. that he played meanest to take Jalandhar down .. targeting n betraying own worshiper .. who believed him blindly!!

PS: I don't know what made u say so but thankfully Hinduism is respectful to woman like Vrinda or Mandodari who was always there for their husband .. that's y de got the tag of most respectful women

OK, I know by now everyone will know the story of Jalandhar. But then, in SHiva Purana itself, there is a story of Shankhachooda. Its the same thing as Jalandhar, except for some minor changes:

  • Shankhachooda is Shridama, the friend of Krishna cursed by Radha (now this is not the Krishna of the Krishna avatar; this is the Original SPoG in Goloka, if you have read Srila pRabhupada's books you will know)
  • He doesn't lust after Parvati
  • His wife is Tulasi, the daughter of King Dharmadhvaja
  • Even Shiva cannot defeat him w/o cheating
  • Along with his wife's pativrata dharm, his pious deeds made Lord Krsna to give him his own armour, which cannot be broken at all
Other than that, same thing: SHiva won't be able to defeat, and Vishnu will cheat Tulasi like Vrinda.
Now my point is, both these stories are in Shiva PUrana, so if one is true, so is the other.
But how can Vishnu use the same trick twice? And how come Vrinda becomes Tulasi, when Tlasi is already SHankh's wife?
Note: Jal and Shankh are different ppl. Jal is born frm krodhagni and Shankh is the son of Dambha.

no he didn't do it twice .. both r same stories only d name is different .. as Puranas were written through out ages n written by a many one so sometime u wl find different names of same character .. Tulsi is also known as VRINDA TULSHI .. n Sankhachur n Jalandhar is d same person

Another story of Jalandhar

Jalandhara (sometimes Jallandhar or Calantaran) is a figure in Hindu mythology.

Jalandhara was the king of the asuras although he was a good king . He himself was not an asura but was born out of the union of the lightning from Shiva's third eye and the Ocean. In one story, he accuses Shiva of hypocrisy, pointing out that Shiva claims to be an ascetic but keeps a wife, Parvati. Jalandhara proposes that Shiva hand over Parvati to him:

"How can you live on alms and yet keep the beautiful Parvati ? Give her to me, and wander from house to house with your alms bowl. You have fallen from your vow. . . .You are a yogi ;what need have you for the gem of wives? You live in the woods attended by goblins and ghosts; being a naked yogi, you should give your wife to one who will appreciate her better than you do."

Upon hearing these insults Shiva becomes so angry that a fearsome creature (Kirttimukha) sprang from his brow and nearly killed Rahu, the messenger who had delivered the demand.

Jalandhara had a wife of remarkable piety named Vrinda (in some versions Tulasi). So pious is she that Jalandhara's misdeeds go unpunished under the protection of her virtue. Eventually Vishnu shatters Vrinda's chastity; a path is thereby opened to the punishment of Jalandhara, who is killed by Lord Shiva. To comfort Vrinda in her grief and despair, Vishnu promises her that a beautiful plant will grow from her grave, and that its wood would be used to make a garland (tulasi mala) for his neck.

Either way, the Tulasi plant today is highly valued for its medicinal properties, and it is associated with the festival of Uttana Dwadashi.

Tulasi Jalandhara is a popular drama and storyline for Harikatha discourses.

Another small contribution( this contribution is from

Vishnu maya

):-
According to Hindu mythology Lord Shiva (Parama Shiva) while on a hunt happened to hear a sweet voice in the jungle. He was surprised to find that it belonged to a tribal girl, "Koolivaka" (Pronounced as Koolivaaka) - a girl of immense beauty. The solitude in that forest area called Koolivanam, and the wild beauty of the forest girl, made the Lord lustful. He informed Koolivaka of his wish and told her to wait for him until he returned from his hunt.
Koolivaka, who was a devotee of Parvathi realized that mating with lord would bring forth the wrath of the goddess upon her; but she feared the wrath of Shiva also in case she refused him. She prayed to her Goddess to save her from the predicament. Devi (goddess) pleased with her innocence appeared before her and revealed her true identity. In her previous birth Koolivaka was Mansawini, a servant in the retinue of Parvati. One day she happened to breast-feed lord vinayaka who was a baby at that time. Parvati didn't appreciate the fact of a servant breast-feeding her baby. She cursed manaswini that she would be born in a chandala(outcaste)family. When Parvathi's anger subdued, she took pity on Manaswini. Devi Parvathi blessed her that although she be born as a chandala she would get the opportunity to breast-feed the son of Shiva.
Devi disclosed that it was the pre-ordained fate that made possible her meeting with Lord Shiva and his passion for Koolivaka. She told the girl that she herself would take on the form of Koolivaka and deceive the Lord Shiva. She also informed Koolivaka that the son born from such a union would be the killer of Jalandhara, a powerful Asura. Thus revealing the course of fate, she sent the innocent girl away.
The pseudo Koolivaka started swinging on a creeper attached to a jackfruit tree and waited for the arrival of Lord Shiva. A child with divine power was born through this holy union. Lord Shiva arranged a buffalo for the protection of the child. This divine child who came to be known as "Chathan" was given to Koolivaka for rearing. Koolivaka thus became the mother of Chathan, son of Lord Shiva fulfilling the boon of Parvathi.

Chathan lived with Koolivaka for about seven years. The tribals loved the boy who saved them from many dangers. He roamed the jungle riding his buffalo and playing a musical instrument known as "Ezhara".

On his seventh birthday, the tribals held a feast in his honour. During the feast the sage, Narada manifested himself. He revealed to Chathan the secret of his birth. Moreover Narada advised Chathan to visit his true parents in Kailasa. He also told Chathan the true purpose of his birth.

Chathan started his journey to Kailasam with the permission of his foster mother and friends. He rode on his buffalo to Kailasam. When he was about to reach Kailasam he realized that Nandikeshwara would not allow him to enter Kailasm in his present form. So he took the form of Lord Vishnu. On seeing their son, Shiva and Parvathi were very happy and hugged their son. Lord Shiva blessed him saying, "You invoked the form of Vishnu by Maya(magic). So you will be known as Vishnu Maya". Moreover, he taught him the art of warfare and the secrets to kill Jalandhara(an asura who had been harassing the Devas).

Jalandhara was an asura who had got a boon from Indra and he was terrorizing the three worlds (Heaven, Pathala (Nether World) and Earth). Chathan challenged him to battle. After a fierce battle, Chathan took the form of Sudarsana Chakra with his Maya to behead Jalandhara. Sensing danger, he escaped and hid himself in the seas. Chathan as Chakra followed him. Due to the heat of the fiercely revolving Chakra the water where Jalandhar was hiding started to boil. Unable to bear the heat, Jalndhara came out and he was promptly beheaded. Thus came the end of Jalandhara. With the killing of Jalandhara, the power of Chathan was recognized by the Devas. Indra invited him to Heaven. But Chathan declined the offer saying that his place was among the poor people who needed his protection. Chathan returned to his own people.

Another powerful Asura called Briga saw Koolivaka in the forest and wanted to take her as his wife. He had come with a large force and tried to capture her. Chathan along with his trusted follower, "Karinkutty" resisted the attack. Chathan was injured in the conflict. From the blood that fell on the ground, there arose 400 "Kuttiuchathan"s. Sensing his immediate defeat, Briga used ten Brahmastras against Chathan, ten Kuttichathans valiantly swallowed the weapon and gave up their life. The remaining 390 Kuttichathans defeated the army while the senior Chathan killed Briga with his Kuruvadi (short Stick).

Vishnu Maya is also the Sister of Shri Krishna, who is Shri Vishnu. Just after Shri Krishna was born, he was taken to King Nand and the daughter of King Nand was brought to Devaki. When King Kamsa saw that the eighth child of Vasudev and Devaki is not a boy and is a girl, he was very angry. He started to kill the girl and the girl escaped into the sky and there was a huge lightning flash in the sky. This is Shri Krishna's sister, Shri Vishnu Maya. She is in the form of electricity or lightning, and protects the chastity in human being.
