I had once opened this thread in the MM forum on dice games that we read about in books, or see in TV

Given today's episode of Parvati coming out w/ this game, I wanted to explore it further, w/ some more questions:
  • What are the mythological (not historical) origins of this game?
  • Was it called Chausar, or something else?
  • How different is it from Ludo?
  • What were the rules?
  • Does chess owe its origins in this game (seems unlikely, given the dice factor)
Regardless of whether what they showed today was authentic or not, I was reminded of it, and it opened up that same question.

In Ramanand Sagar's Shri Krishna, they showed Mahadev & Parvati playing this game, and them quarreling over it, and Parvati leaving in a huff. 😆 One of Parvati's attendants impersonated her and continued the game, and when Parvati discovered her, she cursed her to be born on earth. She was Chitralekha, the maid of Usha, and her task was done when she got Anirudha & Usha together.

Anyway, seeing the game being formulated today and played tomorrow was interesting. I know some may be bored, but I've always been intrigued about this game. So any discussions about it in this thread are welcome.

(Poll question has nothing to do w/ it - just my own curiosity)

Pankaj Dheer will always be known as Karna as this role gave him popularity and success, just like Surendra Pal will always be known as Dronacharya or Mukesh Khanna as Bhishm Pitama.U could have made a separate topic on the game of dice.

Chaupar and Pachisi are not the same. They are very similar but not identical. The former is a more complex version.

BTW, there used to be a chess-like dice game called Chaturaji:

A dice-less variant used to be played as well.

ritika06, one just needs to vote on it, not discuss it, since the poll is purely subjective.

Shruti, thanks for that link. Actually, reading it, Chaupar seems more like the name of that game, rather than Chausar Looking @ the table for the thing, they have numbers from 1-6, but given that they use a set of cuboid shaped dice & add up the dots, it seems to me that there are more numbers that are available (somewhat like Monopoly). That part about the cowries was unclear. As the note said, the description was unclear.

The article also mentioned Shiva & Parvati playing it. In ASR, they showed Rama & Sita playing it, and it is a famous sight in every Mahabharata. I recall an ACK about Tanaji where they show Shivaji Maharaj play a game w/ Jijabai, and where she asks for the fort of Kondana (?) as her prize for winning.

So it was Shiva & Parvati who came up w/ the game? I'd have thought that it would have been either Vishnu, or the devas. There have been so many famous & infamous games around this, which make it all the more interesting.

They should sell it in shops, as well as make it a software game on PCs, tablets & phones 😆

Kal

It would seem that Chausar & Chaupar are different. The former being a Persian game, and the latter a Vedic game.

As you point out, Chausar and Chaturaji may be either related, or independent sources of what went on to become Chess.

Seeing the picture, I understand why they call the rook a boat in Indian languages.
