I doubt it - why would Vaishnavas be flattered @ their kuldeva being turned into a female? In the Samudra Manthan and Bhashmasura stories, they might, but in this Mahishi-vadh story, in what way? I doubt that this was written to please/mollify either of the sects.[/QUOTE

@Vrish..might be true..many stories seems to be return malign the image of certain Deities

It cant be completely true..some blunder are made over the ages...

^^^ I don't doubt it, given how different scriptures tend to embellish the achievements of their deities, and underplay their setbacks. For instance, there is nothing in the Vishnu Purana about Virbhadra defeating Vishnu, and there is nothing in any of the Shiva Puranas about Mahadev losing a battle to Krishna over Banasura. Different puranas were written by different sages w/ a goal of praising their favorite deities to no end, and in the process, they end up contradicting each other on various events.

And yeah, there is always the issue of the writings being distorted over time.
