In the Ramayan, I thought that it was mentioned that it was Mahadev, rather than Murugan, who bestowed on Agastya the grammatical elements of the Tamil language. Did Murugan enhance what his father already did?

When Shiva was beating his drum with both hands, from one side came the syllables of the Sanskrit language which was copied down by Panini- the Sanskrit grammarian, while from the other side emerged the syllables of Tamil language which was noted down by Sage Agastya.

But sylllables are not enough to constitute a language. It was Murugan who tutored Agastya in the intricacies of grammar and structure . So , yes, Murugan did enhance what his father had begun.

Ganesha is popular all ovar India because of his agrapuja ie first worship boon. Otherwise even Ganesha is not that much worshipped in the North. He is very popular in Maharashtra

Panini did both - the copying of syallables and its grammar and structure.

Tamil is more complicated, you know.😊

It may not be nationally popular, and may be regionally constrained, but that doesn't make it ridiculous. That way, there are tons of stuff, which, if examined through non-mytho lenses, would look just as bizarre.

I doubt it - why would Vaishnavas be flattered @ their kuldeva being turned into a female? In the Samudra Manthan and Bhashmasura stories, they might, but in this Mahishi-vadh story, in what way? I doubt that this was written to please/mollify either of the sects.
