And it indeed is a powerful temple. You can feel the vibration if you visit there early morning, just after the temple opens. There is an eerie feeling one gets inside, if one can sit a bit and meditate a bit. However its almost impossible dude to the pandas who will bug you for money again and again unless you know the inside and can tell them off.

I've visited that temple twice. The pandas bothering is irritating. even among them they auction for big days, Diwali day gets the highest bidding. The lucky panda gets max money offered that day. This sacrifice thing was repeatedly told by another person visited just 3 months back he saw a goat being taken for sacrifice on Tuesday.

Arent these animals made by God and did he really asked for this sarcrefice??All the animals have an atma and that is gods gift. Who give us the right to kill it?? What happens to the atma of the animal..does it get a properplace or a punar life?? If gods says he loves humans, animals and everything in live unconditionally. Than how can we kill it?? This is only ma pov and its not ma intention to hurt anybody..

What if these Goats wish to sacrifice the one in their next birth who killed them in the name of offering to God.
@Reshma you are not hurting anybody. Even the Yantra pooja of Mahakaali in Dash Mahavidyas never mentions sacrificing animals. It only uses ingrdients like flower, Belpatra, Clove, Kumkum, Fruits etc.
It's not mentioned anywhere Gods will be pleased only if you sacrifice animals or birds.
The change can only be brought through education. But even after being educated they accept this as a parampara, then it's a sad scene.

as i said in my posts in this thread, its more of a social custome that got juxtaposed as religious one. Its same like some of the customs like casteism etc.

I think it's very difficult to separate social and religious customs...religion is social after all.

I don't think we can resort to "what god would want" either. After all, how can we know that? And different people might think differently!

Although these practices might be ancient and be part of a long-standing tradition, we can only hope that today's values bring about a change. After all, customs and practices are never static. They also came from a place, a particular time and context. And they will inevitably change.

I'll give you an interesting example. A bunch of anthropologists in the 1970s wanted to reconstruct a very rare Vedic sacrifice and to film it. The only people who still knew how to do it were Keralite Namboodri Brahmins. So they started to do construct the altar etc. It got to the point when a goat had to be sacrificed. The brahmins refused saying that their customs (of strict vegetarianism) didn't allow that and they would use a substitute for the goat. The anthropologists argued for a while - they wanted to recreate an ancient sacrifice as it might have happened in ancient times...without realizing that they were dealing with people who had a very different set of values! Finally they had to agree that an effigy would be used instead.

This always reminds me that customs/values/practices are never static...and are subject to change!

If anyone is interested, the sacrifice was filmed - it's called the Agnicayana and should be available in most university libraries. You can just google it too, there should be pictures etc.

Since the offering is made in the name of God, that thought is bound to come. Our rich spiritual heritage mentions various ways to connect to the Supreme Power by the way way of meditation being the easiest. There are other ways too which only an expert yogi can follow.
The knowledge one gets in meditation doesn't depend on any thought pattern, it is just received by reaching on a higher state of mind, where mind is free of thoughts.
Has any yogi reached on a higher stage reccomended animal sacrifice? To best of my knowledge, no.

@tptwi, asmita, Vrish, since you all MOTW, do you all want to continue discussion on animal sacrifice? If any one says no, then let's get back to the originall MOTW grilling session.
