very true tanni,...after sandhipuja realy it seems like maa durga is around us n the feelings ahh i cant express in words its soo overwhelming 😍...

@Taani-everytime i see those Durga idols on TV,i swear i look at them in awe...youll really make them the most beautiful, they portray so much-i dont think any other artisan if any other state make such beautiful idols,me and my mom both just love the Durga Ma idols shown during Navratri...not to forget Bengali girls(generally) have really pretty eyes!...and ya like you,im a HUGE fan of Big eyes,i have pretty big eyes too😆,but my mom tells me they look like the shape of Sardines...🤣...
like you said about Durga, after the Pooja is done you can actually feel like shes looking at you,i have a similar feeling when we celebrate Ganesh Chaturthi in Goa-i think Konkan artisans make the most beautiful Ganapati Murtis-you can actually feel that Bappa is looking at you with his eyes,i can almost see him smiling at me...it just makes you feel so happy na???...you really feel like they are standing in front of you-not that otherwise they arent there, but our Murtis speak so much dont they?

totally out of topic discussion, but i read one writing of Sir Syed Mujtaba Ali, where he said, the one Indian artists brings the right features into idols, be it Gods or be it humans, no one can do it. He cited, thai buddhas look thai, similar chinese buddhas look different, or the gandhara art which looks a bit different, but when we make a jesus, he looks just like Jesus from rest of the world. Its a gift i guess.
and yes, they look at us all the time,. the Gods, but there are special moments, during Puja, when you can feel it, and even if you are not rilli much spiritual, you still can feel it in your heart. And if you are spiritual, you can actually feel that they are there, they are happy. I know, we too make ganesh, but he kinda looks cute, The bappas i have seen in maharasthra, they really look proper Ganapati, You know siddhidata.bengalis excel more in making Goddess idol i guess. and Seeing Ganesh as the baby in the lap of ganesh janani, we always make ganesh a bit sweet. But the ones i have seen in Pune, MY GOD, now thats what Ganapati should look like.

Eyes: Lol, i donno, sometimes i think i have large eyes, sometimes small. Overall i love the eyes of cows , but once i told a person her eyes are so beautiful, just like a cow, and she threw a fit at our house, thinking i was humiliating her.😆
I haven't really seen proper doe , but among animals, cows really have huge expressive eyes with huge eyelashes. Honestly, if anyone tells me I have eyes like cow, that will make my day.

As for durga idols, we usually have two different types of face structures for idols, but the Eye , big eyes are rilli important. Actually, painting the eye is itself a festival. It is done only on the mahalaya day, and only the best artist, who will fast all day can do the Chakshudan. once eyes are drawn, mother is alive,s o before that the clothes and everything else are drawn.

this one was clicked by me, right after sandhipuja on 2007 on our local puja, its my most favortie durga picture. Enjoy

Samana

I used to think that way too - as a kid during the 80s, I used to enjoy Durga Pujas in Calcutta. Of course, I lived abroad for a while, and have been in the city the last few years, but these days, unlike then, it's far more congested and tough to cover as many as one previously could throughout the city. I wonder whether they are popular in places like Darjeeling - I'm imagining that the crowds there would be much less.

Incidentally, I was wondering one thing - since Sonarika is Parvati, will they have her double as Durga, or will they put someone else? We had Mouni and Krishna Gokhani play Adi Shakti, although I dunno whether Adi Shakti would make any future appearances. At any rate, I'm just wondering will they re-use Sonarika for Durga?

One thing about that - when Parvati wanted to avenge Ganesh's beheading, she invoked both Durga & Kali to wreck havoc on the 3 worlds. If Sonarika plays Parvati, would she be expected to play Mahakali as well? Or might we see a repeat of the girl who played Bhadrakali alongside Veerbhadra? Seems to me that if Sonarika doesn't play Mahakali, she shouldn't play Ma Durga either. But that's just me.

Speaking of which, makes me wonder whether the stories of Durga vs Mahishashur, or Chandi vs Raktabheej and so on - whether they will be covered in this serial. Hopefully, if this serial runs something like 3-4 years?

@Taani-eyes like a cow-actually i too find Cows have very beautiful eyes...i have the long eyelash type eyes...you know what my sis tells me-youve got eyes like a Donkey🤣, because Donkeys have long eyelashes too...ha ha...
but anyways loved the picture you posted of Devi Maa,of so painting the eye itself is a ritual?no wonder they are so beautiful, they look absolutely stunning...i think Indian artisans are the best whether its the Radha Krishna Idols of Gujarat, the Durga Idols of Bengal or the Ganapati idols of the Konkan region...i guess one more reason why they are so beautiful is because they are made out of love and devotion, irrespective of who it is...
@Vrish-im surious about that too, regarding Mahakali they have gone as per the version that she emerged from Shiva and not from Shakti...but yes during the Ganapati episode they may show Sonarika playing both parts, because as far as i have read,Kaali,Durga,Mahakali emerge from Devi Maas anger...
but lets see...

@vrish and @samana Durga puja is extremely famous in Darjeeling but our way of celebration is totally different from both the Bengali's and the Nepalese of Nepal most of us fast during the auspicious nine days and if not fasting then you stay on strict vegetarian diets and beautiful bhajan kirtans are held in various temples during the evening which ends with a lovely aarti for Ma and Her idol is dressed up according to her various avatars for all 9 days and food is cooked according to what Ma is suppose to favour in that particular day...in Darjeeling Durga Puja is more of a celebration of sacred feminism as is the Month of May dedicated to the holy mother Mary...and samana it's kurseong not kharsyang...in between i guess i am the only one with slanted (chinky) eyes maybe because of that i seriously got goosebumps when Sati transformed into Adi Shakti for Mouni has the most beautiful slanted eyes😊

@Vrish, I don't know if Durga puja is famous in Darjeeling. But most of the people living in Darjeeling are of Nepali origin. I know this because most of the teachers who taught me when I was little were from Darjeeling or Kharsyang(I don't know the spelling) and they were fluent in Nepali. Anywayz, we here celebrate Vijaya dashami as one the major festivals of our country and it is very much different than celebrated in India. Like there is tika laune din, its the time when elders put tika and Jamara in the forehead of the younger ones and give them blessings. There are get-togethers and lot of killings of goat. Its a massacre u could say. So I don't think there's durga puja in darjeeling. But I really really wanna see one, I love the feel of Durga puja when I watch it on tv!

hey sis do u speak nepali??? omg is it a co-incidence that we not only share the same profile pic but our mother tongue is the same??? If yes we should thank Nina Dobrev 😆😆

You're from Darjeeling? I studied there in Class 4 & 5. You are right - although it's a part of WB, its people are not Bongs - if you live there, the only languages that work are Nepali and Hindi, but not Bengali. Yeah, I was curious about whether the Darj Nepalis celebrate it or not, and as per your account, they not only celebrate it differently from the Bongs, but also from the Nepalese Nepalis as well.

Shruti

If Sonarika plays both Ma Durga & Kali (the way Mohit played Veerbhadra and Kaalbhairav), that will be a sight! And if she successfully pulls it off, it will be a watershed in her acting career.

Hi guys! Nice discussion!

btw Samana, I've always wanted to visit Nepal. One of my close friends is doing a PhD in Tibetan Buddhism, so he comes there for research and he LOVES it!
One day I hope to visit too!
