UMM, for someone with Indian background, i would prefer to stay with roots. Coz at the end of the day, ISCON and everything else, ultimately bounds us a lot to the restrictions and rules and the idea of one God, the Abhrahamic ideas. They need to go a long way before grasping the idea of religious flexibility and mind over body. Its good for those who find peace with it, anything which can give mental peace and stability is worth applauding, but I would not choose such a way. Your reservations , i doubt its because of your american background. I have them too. I would like to have a faith where i can get to question even my God.
I have read prabhupada's english translation of BG Gita, i personally prefer the one from ramakrishna mission. Its very difficult to understand gita, with his multilayered, highly philosophical thinking. Forget caucasians and christians, you can count in finger how many Indians can actually interpret gita properly. But its such a source of strength.
ISCON has a nice rathayatra in kolkata, its one of the grandest. I have been their. Its a wondeful feeling, pulling the ratha with 1000s of people together.

I am not sure, but people have done a lot of work on padabali, coz its an important aspect of Vaishnava literature that developed during the bhakti movement, so there should be some translation. GeetaGivinda definitely there is english translation online.

Well, the idea of a single god is not just an Abrahamic concept. Hindus had it down thousands of years before that. Throughout all religious texts, the idea that a single Paramatman, a single Brahman, controls everything is prevalent. All those multiple deities are simply his forms and manifestations. Since the idea of the supreme soul and jivatma, the living soul, is difficult for most to grasp, God is worshiped in his physical forms i.e. the Gods and Goddesses.
And I have Prabhupada's The Bhagavad Gita As It Is. I like how he describes everything to the T. For those who don't know anything about the Mahabharata, this is a nice intro.

And don't they have a Rath Yatra in Puri too? The Jaganath Rath Yatra? The next time I go to India, Mayapur, Vrindavan, and Puri are definitely going to top my list of places to visit.

I'm still watching yesterday's Jhalak episode. Anyone ever noticed how much Shaan looks like George Lopez.

Yes, but it always has been look inside you and feel your unity with the supreme being and all of us are manifestations of the supreme being. You know what i mean? Whereas my catholic friends i see treat God as someone different, sort of a high judge. Even the muslim people i know think of Allah like that. Thats what i meant.
Okay. If you ever can, try to read the Bhagavad Gita sanskrit shlokas too, its pretty cool.

ratha yatra is the biggest festival of puri, coming on this tuesday, 19th June. Its insanely crazy in puri that time. Stampede and everything. MY crazy ninja grandmothers went there once. We were sick with worry. My family has adopted Jagannath as the family God. Any 7 day holiday and they run off to puri. But strangely, I only have been there, once.

Vrindavan is beautiful. I have never been there, i want to go there. You should visit nadia, the birthplace of Shri Chaitanya . Its where the whole new vaishnav Bhakti movement and social reform of middle ages evolved. Everything that later inspired the Krishna movement.

I know! We are indeed manifestations of that supreme soul, but the difference is that we are like tiny particles of him. We're like water droplets and he's the infinite ocean. We might be made of the same substance, but it wouldn't make sense to compare the two. And I love how Krishna bhakti is so personal. People can worship him as a father, brother, best friend, or even husband! What other religion has that?

Lol, I grew up in Mumbai! well, the first six years of my life anyway. I can make it through any type of "bheedh" in India. I'll definitely add Nadia to my list! Won't be able to go to India this summer, so maybe next year. Next weekend we're heading West! Pura Las Vegas aur Grand Canyon dekh ke aayenge.
