Interesting topic and very well put in thoughts by all.. I completely agree with Gauri and the way she has put it... Its not choosing one over the other, in most of the cases you would have striked a balance... I guess, one has to analyse in which front you absense in going to impact what and how many lives does it impact... I agree that in this modern technological world, you can remain well connected from home and get your work done.. You would also typically always have planned for contingencies for all emergencies that may arise... I also believe, that how much of an important position you hold at work, you are never indispensable - a backup can always be worked and arranged.... So for any emergencies, I dont think the family actually will need to be neglected to get the work done...

I will also add to this, that the current day corporates have employee care as a major theme as a part of their DNA.. So, if any employee has a genuine personal problem, I have always seen him or her being supported by the org.. They will always ensure this, so I dont think one will usually be pushed to the corner to make this choice...
