Chennai: In a shocking case of dowry harassment, a pregnant woman was beaten by her husband and in-laws and thrown out of a moving car while she was in the US with them.

Twenty three-year-old Smalin Jenita, who holds an MBA degree, suffers from 52 fractures after her husband, Christy Daniels, an Infosys employee in Ohio allegedly thrashed her and threw her out of on the road.

"My daughter told me that her husband, mother-in-law and sister-in-law had beaten her at home, taken her in the car and threw her out of the moving car," says Smalin's father.

All communication with Jenita's family was cut off slowly after her marriage as her father could not meet the repeated dowry demands of Christy Daniel's family. Smalin's family was not even informed when she was hospitalised.

It was after only after the hospital authorities informed Smalin's family about the incident that her father rushed to the US to bring her back home.

"I will meet the DGP tomorrow and lodge a complaint of dowry harassment and attempt to murder. I will also file a civil complaint in the US against my son-in-law," says Smalin's father.

Both Smalin and her child are in a stable condition in Mehta hospital in Chennai. Smalin is paralysed on the left side due to brain injuries that she suffered with. However Smalin's incident is a case in point of how dowry harassment is not just limited to the uneducated and the poor.

Education does not give common sense and humanity

This is sad that the girl is semi-paralyzed.. This proves my point i made earlier that its not all about money...all these guys involved arent poor..of course the guy had a poor mentality though...the solution lies in a different domain... and not in "down with dowry" slogans and making all those laws which can be easilly misused...

also education has nothing to do with either common sense of humane thinking... its the upbringing which matters here...😊

Sorry for spamming but couldn't resist!

@ Myth's post - I saw something similar on Zee News a few days ago and it was horrendous. What shocked me was that her neighbours were recording the incident, but not helping. 🤢

Qwerty, it may be about upbringing, but what is the root cause in most of the abuse cases - dowry!

Vinu, evenif the girl has done some thing wrong, it is cruel to do this to a pregnent women. Media may be biased and there may be stories behind, but it is sure that the girl is thrown out of a running car.

Thinking sons as an asset/income and girls as an expenditure is the basic mindset. While growing, some how boys thinking about living luxuriously by means of dowery prportionate to their position.(I am not saying all are like this). Education, caste, socioal position has nothing in it, only the mindset of people.

When a family is asking dowery from another family not only the women are suffering the entire family may be suffering(younger children may be deprived of their education, goodcloth, food ect.). Dowery is a cause of destruction in families not only to the women, both in poor and rich, if they can not afford. In order to give dowery there is the hardship/suffering of a father/brother sister etc. It is a social evil not only a thing against women.
