Hello All,

It has come to my attention that DM is no longer the serious section it used to be. I understand that serious talk gets boring if it's done all the time. However, DM is a section for debating. There are GD sections, ML and Chat Clubs for just talking. I've noticed that many debates start out on a good note, but then the members deviate from the origional topic and start sub-topics within one debate. Also, I have noticed that some members are not taking the debates as seriously. Instead of discussing the topic, they chat and pull each other's legs. All this is classified as spamming, which isnt supported in DM (or any i-f section). Please post your comments to the topic being debated. Posts without substance will result the in poster getting a PM warning from me.

I don't like having to police the section. However, it is essential to keep things running smoothly. I hope that all of you will abide by these rules so I don't have to post any more Reminders in the future.

Thankyou Javz!

Right post at right time!

Yes earlier Debates used to be very perfect, people used to debate very religiously or militarily😛 but things changed.......in the transition from Conventional form to Modern form DM lost its beauty for some days!

Now the DM got settled these days debates are going wonderfully with ample fun!

We lost wonderful DMers like Abhijit Uncle,Jatayu Uncle, Sowmyaa Di, Buffie but at the same time we got wonderful DMers like QWERTY,CBGAURI ji, Souro who are adding glory to DM! However oldies like Vinit Bhayya(sareg)Kabhijit, Maya ji, Pravina ji(lighthouse),Subha Di(MerimaidQT),Raksha ji are contributing a lot to keep this section lively as always!

These are my POV and hope I did'nt hurt anyone by saying these!!!!

Wishes,

Totally concur, we have great debators here and wish with right type of topics our forum brings so much value and learning.😊

Encouraging members to post more debateable topics 😳.

Serious topics of debate, when laced with wit and humour makes it interesting reading and makes it interesting for others to participate as well. "Serious" Debates sometimes tends to keep out the timid debater, and maybe someone who is just getting the ropes of debating...

since there were some posts expressing various views here, i was wondering if i could ask some questions too.

1. in general, are we concerned about member sensitivities here or about the debate as long as it is conducted within technical guidelines? i am asking this since i am a bit confused- on the india/pakistan thread, there was an explicit mention of the taliban reference as being off-topic. how so? doesnt their ideology conflict with a secular india? i mean these issues are discussed openly on cnn, time, newsweek all the time. how does this get off-topic? anyone that for me?

2. i noticed for example a sudden warning appear on the banner thread. are strict guidelines and the creative process consistent with each other. i mean, was that so necessary at that time considering how rampant "spamming" is everywhere?

in this respect, if a moderator makes a determination that something is wrong while the active members dont think that it is, who is right? is the moderator trained to make these assessments and butt in whenever they want, ending the free flow? i mean i dont think the debators here are exactly stupid, but then who knows.

Also, I have noticed that some members are not taking the debates as seriously. Instead of discussing the topic, they chat and pull each other's legs. All this is classified as spamming, which isnt supported in DM (or any i-f section).

how do you define spamming?

1. here is wikipedia's definition:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spamming

it starts by saying "spamming is the abuse of electronic messaging systems to indiscriminately send unsolicited bulk messages". dont see how your classification fits in.

2. since there are some kind of spamming rules in the other sections i have visited, eg sgmp and psf, i dont see how what we have here on DM is any different in terms of spamming. would you care for examples of rampant spamming elsewhere as you define it?

3. in fact, should we expect these rules to be consistently enforced cross-sectionally?

Please post your comments to the topic being debated. Posts without substance will result the in poster getting a PM warning from me.

do the members have recourse to go report a moderator if a moderator themselves is an issue to the smooth running of a section?

Priya di,

I completely agree. However, there should be more substance and less humor in the debates. (unless it is supposed to be a light-hearted debate)

I hope we are able to differentiate between 50 ml of water in a litre of milk and 50 mil of milk in a litre of water😉

on a side note, If Aarey has a strike, 50 ml of milk in 1 litre of water is perfectly fine😆, sorry, cant resist😆

Humour, to me, is a way of life... its the way to make life more interesting, its a way to make life more memorable. If humour is taken out of debates, then all remains is a methodical presentation of facts at hand, its analysis by a prosaic mind and in general, assimilation of facts and events related to the issue.

Add humour to it, makes it lively, and encourages even a casual observer to share his point of view.

Agree with sareg that which is 50% water and which is 50% milk will still be a cause of debate😛 but at least we are guaranteed of 50% milk... and water of course... when this proportion changes, thats when the problem comes and ideally (at least thats my pov) we should strive to keep this balance at 50%
