Nearly three decades ago, K.J.Yesudas(singer) was stopped at the gate of the Sree krishna temple in guruvayour kerala, his religion (christanity) was held him, and the clasical and cinema singer was barred from performing in the precincts of hindu lord, however Yesudas guru Chembai Vaidynata Bhagavatar was let in,But seeing his disciple's plight, the led Yesudas to an impromptu, all-night concert in praise of lord krishna outside the temple.

What do u think? Does it make sense to keep yesudas out because of his religion in this day n age?

If yesudas can perform unfetterd in the kollur mookambia,n sabarimala, why should only the guruvayour temple bar his entry? if sonia gandhi can grandly welcomed at many of our big hindu temples, including Tirupati Why can't yesudas??

Guruvayoor, the temple situated in Kerala doesn't allow any non Hindus. Be it Sonia Gandhi, Yesudas or Prince Charles. When Sonia Gandhi went to Guruvayoor with Rajiv Gandhi, she was asked not to enter.

In my opinion I don't like this discrimination. When it comes to religious places there shouldn't be any discrimination based on religion or caste.

Why the other temples permit entry to Non Hindus or Yesudas or others like Sonia Gandhi, I cannot comment, but can cite a parallel example.

Last year, I visited the Hazratbal in Srinagar. As Hindus, we were not permitted entry beyond a point.

I was told by a Syrian Christian that other religions members were not permitted to partake the wine which was being distributed in a church conducted ceremony.

I do not believe in religious discriminations, but at the same time, I do believe that certain prayer places are maintained with some sanctity, which those belonging to those religions will know and understand and therefore be part to maintaining it.

Eg:- Temples do not permit children below a certain age within the sanctum sanctorum. reason - As per the shastras with which the temples have been constructed and the decorum maintained, if there is any defility (babies answering call of nature/ menstruating ladies entering the temple/ place of worship etc) the temple has to be purified following a lengthy procedure. Same is the case for persons belonging to or following other religions.

Guruvaryoor is my most favourite place in the world and given a choice, I would visit it everyday, but since I cant, I try to go at least once a month or once in two months. The Devasthanam Board take a lot of efforts to maintain the temple in the same manner as prescribed in scriptures and keep up the Hindu tradition. I believe the temple authorities are right if they restrict the entry of devotees to the temple to those following the Hindu religion.

Some law should change.........
there in guruvayour people cant wear salwar, pant or shirt like that things....
If anyone believe other religion gods and wish to pray, they should allow to visit to temple or even a masuk or church.
In Guruvayour they can hear all Yesudas divotional songs, they should atlest allow to sing infront of that temple.

Priya, Are you a Malayali? I always thought you speak Marathi. Here we have a Marathi gang lead by Mandu and QT😃.

Whatever our scriptures say I still don't support discrimination based on religion and caste in any religious places temples, mosque, church. Why only temples in Kerala have this rule? In our family temple we still don't allow people of lower caste to enter. I have never seen discrimination in the temples of North India.

I agree about Guruvayoor Devasom board. One of the well maintained temple. 👏

Every Malayali Hindu has at least one Hindu devotional song sung by Yesudas. 😃

Maya, I am from Kerala, - palghat tamil speaking brahmins as our sect is more popularly known. I speak marathi as I am born and brought up in Mumbai and consider this to be my true birthplace and the place to which I belong 😃

I agree that the temples in north India follow a different system altogether. There, in Shiv Temples, the devotees are allowed to perform puja to the shiv ling directly. Take any south Indian temple, other than the temple pujaris, no one is allowed to enter the sanctum sanctorum. Whether the north Indian customs and religion is better than south, I dont know and I dont wish to go into that aspect as well, but I believe to each his own. When in Rome, behave as the Romans do. If the south practices a particular conduct within the temple premises and the north practices another, we must follow them.

When we visited the Amritsar Temple, we were asked to cover our heads. As a south Indian, typically, women cover their head only if they are widows. Non Widows do not ever cover their heads and it is considered inauspicious to do so. But that temple required that the devotees cover their heads when approaching the sanctum and we did it.

I have a huge collection of his devotional songs, particularly for Guruvayurappan and Ayyappa... Vishu and Onam Celebrations seem incomplete without the sound of his songs reverbrating in the house. Every car ferrying devotees to Guruvayoor or Sabari mala plays his songs.

But the Devastham Board have their own reasons for it.

I think all will knows that, It was Jagadguru Adi Shankaracharya who laid down the rules for temple rituals. Strict temple rituals in Kerala have created powerful deities.

After the state of Kerala was created, Devasom Boards were created to help run the affairs of isolated
temples smoothly.but no use.......
