Hema Malini's effigy burnt in Mumbai Ravi Tiwari/Priyanka Kakodkar
Thursday, January 25, 2007 (Mumbai):
Hema Malini faced the anger of the north Indian community in Mumbai as they burnt her effigy.
It was after the actress and Rajya Sabha MP made some unsavoury remarks at programme organised to celebrate UP's statehood.
Hema Malini when asked that those from North India have contributed a lot to Mumbai but are constantly troubled in Mumbai, she said then they should just go back.
In an election season what was meant to be funny has probably wiped the smile off the actress' face.
The Congress is joining the NCP and wants the actress to apologise publicly or else it has threatened a sit-in outside the actress' house.
"The BJP has to clarify its stand," said Sanjay Nirupam, Congress spokesperson.
"Before making such statements she should think of who she's married to," said Praful Patel, NCP leader.
While Hema remained out of contact throughout the day the party she represents was hard pressed for an answer.
With the north Indian community forming a large chunk of the electorate, the BJP will now have to act fast if it wants to defuse what's fast turning into an explosive election issue.
