I think other than the reason verybody else listed, there is also the way people look at a marriage. A marriage is treated as something decided by God. Sath phere are considered holy and it is supposed to be a Saat janmo ka bandhan. If people start looking at it in a more practical way than the spirtual one then there won't be any taboo. Thankfully, things are changing gradually. It is a welcome step as long as people see it as a last resort.

A big reason for childhood poverty in us is divorce...among Desis marriage is considered more than coming together of individuals ...a holistic view of the action is taken into account

Mostly because Indian people always look for approval of others. 100 may support us, but 1 person is against it, we loose our sleep over it.
And all these little DNA traits effect many life events, including divorce.

Plus marriage is seen(well it is) as the most important and critical institution in social life.
And it is the backbone of any family, so people are hesitant to break it.
Because divorces break families, not like break ups where most of the times only two people are concerned.

there is a reason why indian hindu community are the richest, most educated community is u.s. ...family values , work ethic...the culture of getting bored with your partner hasn't yet crept in...they also had the lowest divorce rates
