There's been some very scientific research done that shows that our brains have similar activity when seeing someone have both physical and emotional experiences as they do when we are actually having those experiences ourselves. So when we watch a movie about two people falling in love, we actually fall a little in love ourselves. We experience many of the same emotions, so much so that our bodies can actually be temporarily flooded with some of the same chemicals present when we actually fall in love ourselves. Its no wonder then that romantic movies are so popular. But thats just a movie, a few hours of your day. Why, then do we have such strong feelings for these actors?

Some of it can be attributed to the repetition of the movie industry. Many actors are often cast in similar roles. We fall in love with them in two hour increments over and over again. We get a little addicted to the process of it. We see our favorite actor in another romantic role and we know we're in for another few hours of vicarious romance. But its more than just romance. These actors allow us to experience so many things we might never be able to experience on our own. And we love them for it. Even though we know that these actors are not really all that different from us, we see them through the roles they play in the stories we love.

Another reason we idolize actors is the fact that even when the movie or tv series is over, there's always a chance that we'll get to connect with that story again when we see an actor who plays a character we love appearing in another film. I'll be the first to admit that I've frequently browsed IMDB to find an actor's other work because I want to see more of a character I loved. Sometimes I'm disappointed, but sometimes I discovered that the things I liked about a character were actually simply an actor's trademarks. Take Castle for example. I'm sure there were many people who watched the show simply because they loved Nathan Fillion's character in Firefly. And though the two series have very little in common, you can definitely see a little bit of Malcolm Reynolds in Richard Castle. Add to that the fact that the man is just as charming in real life and interacts so well with his fans and its no surprise that he is adored and even idolized by his fans.

We love actors because they make us feel things. They take us on adventures, whether its tagging along on an investigation with a pretty detective or flying through space like a leaf on the wind. We love them because even the most unrealistic stories are grounded in the things we feel in our own lives, love, lust, excitement, jealousy, sadness, hate, fear, joy, and more. The celebs we love feel things for us and in turn we feel things with them. They give life to the stories and characters we love. It would be hard not to love them for it.

Thats very interesting when you think about all that.

I don't idolize anyone...let alone overpaid narcissist celebs whom I know only through what I see of them on media.

I also think this trend of idolizing celebs is dying..

Good for the world.

I really don't like many people but Justin Bieber who I like the most. I don't idolize him cos he's stupid so many times and I laugh alot when people make fun of him. I'm a horrible fan. 😆

But as for the people who idolize stars, I guess it's like second-hand feeling of pride and happiness from the celeb. Soon it becomes people's ego if someone bashes their favorite and it just goes downhill from there that's why I never become fans of celebs cos I always value real people over celebs. Celebs are way too different and pampered than the rest of the world and I don't really get why cos there's much more brilliant people than them like scientists, good doctors, etc who deserve more recognition than talking about some mediocre movie which became a huge success on box office.

The desperate need of the humankind to connect to someone?
From my understanding - idolizing someone is akin to appreciating someone who you want to be but can't. In case of opposite sex, it's someone you want to have but can't. This connection is often so deep that one revels in the idol's success as if that's his own. Sort of like vicariously living through someone else's achievement.

How does that make me a hypocrite? It would be more so if I said I didn't and started bashing people for doing so, then saying that I idolize people too. No where am I did I state such things, just asking a general question.

I love certain characters played by Celebs (mostly TV) but, i dont idolize stars because, i know they are very different from the persona they have created when the cameras are pointing towards them.
Do i cry every time i watch the last scene of Friends or when Chandler proposed Monica? Or, when Barney was heartbroken? Yes! But, don't really care or judge Mathew Perry for his addiction which made him oblivious to 4 seasons of FRIENDS 😆
I find certain actors pretty HOT but that's about it. 😆
Though, i really get attached to fictional characters, i dont idolize celebs.
